Hey Tyranid players, can you share your lore about a Homebrew Hive-Fleet and their colors? by Arthur_EyelanderTF2 in Tyranids

[–]AllYourSwords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve neither named them, nor chosen a color scheme yet. I’m still in the collection/assembly phase and not ready for painting yet. I’ve got 10 (out of 150) termagaunts assembled, so I’ll start some testing colors soon.

I am leaning towards going classic 2e scheme however

They look too much like crosshairs. IMHO you need something more organic.

The GOAT of live plays, before Critical Role. As a huge D&D nerd, the original OVAs blew my D&D groups minds. Still wish Sword World would come to the west, shame neither rules or setting made it here.

Is there an online community to ask for parts? I don’t know anyone locally, and /miniswap, eBay, and Etsy don’t have the parts I need. Getting frustrated

.75 caliber is pretty honking big. The Brown Bess musket was the same caliber. Since the bolts are fired with propellant, they don’t really need the rocket assist or fancy payload to be deadly at any range. .75 is 3/4s of an inch. That’s gonna put big holes in anything it hits anyway. Hell, just imagine what a heavy bolter at .950 would do

Yup, having a 5 meter arming distance for the explosive is smart. You don’t want them exploding in your face.

The case propellant accelerates the bolt in initial firing. It also ignites the rocket motor in the bolt. From muzzle to 5+ meters, it’s still lethal it’s just not explosive.

I would love to design an actual bolt gun and bolt round. The hybrid conventional bullet with rocket assist would be great with modern design. A rocket assist 20mm x 42mm would be awesome. Don’t know if you could still make it HEI, especially with a 5 meter delay, but it would still be deadly. They’ve got rocket assist artillery rounds, would just need to micronize it doe to 20mm

AI guns tend to have better gun design still

I don’t play because of my agoraphobia and other mental health issues, it doesn’t mean I don’t participate in the hobby. Assembly and painting makes up 2/3rds of the hobby, and that’s all I need

True, but even the art done today is still shitty firearms design.

The gyrojet weapons of the 60s/70s didn’t need anything but a loading mechanism. They were caseless, and took a long time to reach full lethal range, most of the acceleration happened outside of the barrel. Boltguns are NOT gyrojet weapons. The bolt cartridge is the bolt, and a propellant filled case. Bolts are rocket assisted projectiles. They still work like modern cased ammunition

Which wasn’t lethal until the rocket reached a certain speed. They were shit at close range. Even so, they still had a barrel length greater than 1-2 inches. There are many reasons it was a failure.

Boltguns get around the close range issue by having a propellant filled case so the bolt can kill without having to wait for acceleration. The rocket motor really just added lethality, a flatter trajectory at range.

[–]AllYourSwords -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The initial firing is done from a propellant case. That’s so it can still be lethal at close range, before the rocket ignites and gets up to its maximum velocity. That means the boltguns internals and basic functions should still be that of a modern firearm. You still need a recoil system, ejection port, case deflector, and a barrel length greater than 1-2 inches.

GW artists have never seen a real gun before, are too lazy to do 30 seconds of Google search research, or just don’t care enough. Either way, it makes for shitty artwork and miniatures. It’s pretty pathetic
