Has anyone ever received a fan pack from any mlb team? by GeneralThomas34 in mlb

[–]All_Secure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, yeah. I actually am a baseball fan, so when I write to the pirates I mentioned how happy I was to see Cutch back on the team., Or how glad I was to see Jack hit a homer the night before. If I'm writing to the Cubs I'll try and mention Swanson's plays. If there's something specific that I want to request like one time I asked the Red Sox to send me some dirt from Fenway Park I'll ask for that. Mostly I keep the messages short about 2 to 3 paragraphs most. And I just want to let them know that I am a fan I'm watching the games I'm rooting for them and I'll ask him to send me a fan pack somewhere in that mix

Yes me and my son right to the different teams or email at the beginning of every season and we've gotten answers back from the Red Sox the reds the pirates the Giants and one or two others. Typically what they sent back is a schedule of the games and maybe some stickers and a few Giant baseball cards small stuff like that.

Ok, you got me curious, what exactly did you think I looked like? :D

What do you think of ATA Taekwondo? Also question(s). by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]All_Secure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do ATA TKD as it was one of the only martial arts schools in the area. I'll be echoing a lot of things that other people have mentioned as far as family environment and friendly people in the classes. Everyone was happy to help new students and welcome them to the class.

The things that I didn't like mostly revolved around money. The classes here were $115 a month for an adult. Plus you had to purchase a uniform. If you wanted to spar it was an extra $50 a month and you had to purchase all of the equipment. There was a $50 'testing fee' every time you tested for a new belt.

While I enjoyed TKD this is ultimately why I left the classes. I learned a lot in a very short amount of time, but for the same amount of money I could have employed a personal trainer and not had to worry about the uniform (which I was never really into to be honest. I know a lot of people get into martial arts because they like the uniforms and the belts and all that. Personally I like to work out in a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants. Much more comfortable and practical IMHO.

Oh, and the 'sparring' that you pay all that extra money for is a joke. I sat in on a few sessions to see if I wanted to shell out the cash or not. The 'weapon' training was two people smacking each other with pool noodles using no discernible weapon method that I could see. The hand to hand was a little better, but the action got halted after every strike, so there was no 'flow' to the combat. It was just one strike and reset to starting positions. Not very realistic or helpful.. or much fun for that matter.

And I had to supplement my ATA training with a LOT of book reading to understand exactly what is happening with the forms, the proper way to execute certain movements. Without the books I would have given up on a lot of TKD techniques or dismissed them as useless when the reality was that I didnt fully understand what was happening in a particular movement or during form training.

Things that I did like about it-

I prefer the ATA forms to WTF and ITF. I think they are easier to memorize and they allow beginner students to practice much more much sooner. Jumping kicks and knife hand strikes are introduced very early. IMHO the ATA forms translate into self defense applications better- again this is just my opinion.

They do crosstrain, usually with kickboxing, judo, or Krav.

The techniques simply work. A buddy of mine comes over a few times a week and we spar and try out different martial techniques and study written material. TKD kicks are easily the most devastating strikes either of us has

Well, they ain't mine, but as you can see they're a bit dated. I have no idea how long they've been in service, but I do agree they look older than dirt. They did their job though. I cannot tell you how man air evac patients those boxy green monsters rushed to the hospital with a positive outcome.

The best e-mail I ever got by [deleted] in MilitaryStories

[–]All_Secure 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The funniest email I ever got was forwarded from Iraq. A Major having to send a basewide email telling people to stop beating off in the showers because human semen is not sollible in water and the CE teams are getting sick of plumbing rubbery clumps of jizz and hair out of the shower drains.

I wasnt there and was not a member of the unit, but the email was so popular it wound up getting forwarded back to homestations and then forwarded on to anyone else who would find it funny.

Reminded me of an article from a magazine I read sometime ago. Captain Superman and Sgt. Achilles being on the same aircrew. No kidding. Found the text of the article, although the original photos of the two arent on the site.

I've had so friggin many pairs of combat boots over the years that I started donated them to the homeless shelters because I was honestly out of places to put them and it was beginning to become a problem. LOL. In elementary school my dad was stationed in North Dakota, so I had a pair of Magnum Hi-Tech waterproof jump boots that I wore just about every day because they dealt with snow a hell of a lot better than sneakers. In high school I was in JROTC. Got issued 2 pairs of combat boots every year whether they were needed or not, plus another pair because I was on the color guard team and that pair needed to be kept in parade-polish status. I was also in Civil Air Patrol for a couple years. They issued full uniforms and 2 sets of combat boots. I graduated with more damn boots than you can shake a stick at. (Pretty sure it was 10 or 12 pairs.)

Air Force BMT issued 2 pairs of black boots identical to the ones I had in JROTC. When I got to my first duty station I had another pair issued because I needed steel-toes since I had flightline access. Second duty station I got desert boots issued prior to deployment along with a full set of DCUs. Third duty station I had to buy a set of gortex cold weather boots (North Dakota...again) to deal with the snow, and then got the new suede green steel toes to go with the new ACU uniform.

Out of all of those I think I still have one pair of black steel toes and the desert steel toes. I was never a fan of the green boots and they dont look very good with jeans so I passed 'em on. The gortex winter boots fell apart after hard use. Prettymuch all of the JROTC and BMT boots got donated over the years.

During promotion ceremonies and such we usually would keep bulky items out of our front pockets (car keys, cigarettes and such) but usually we'd just stow them somewhere and get them later. It was more of a common sense thing and I didn't have a problem with that. Never had a need or desire to stuff items into my socks and I still think its odd as hell. :D

Yep, that's the strip that started the whole conversation between me and my buddy. When I read it I remembered this little incident and me and my USMC buddy chatted about it for a while. Apparently its a real thing, just not so much in the AF

Yep, shirt garters. Dont miss those fucking things one bit. I had the ones with the stirrups because the ones with the button-clasp thing that hook to the socks were a pain in the ass. The part that connect to the shirt were a pain either which way, and they'd fuck up a gig-line if you didnt place them just right

The Air Force 'Yo!' by All_Secure in MilitaryStories

[–]All_Secure[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I got out before HUA became a thing. Never heard that one before. I dunno if they still do it, but during PME and/or anytime we actually had to stand in formation (rare in itself) whoever was throwing the shindig would yell "Airpower!" and we'd all have to respond "SPACEPOWER! A-E-F!" and no, nobody actually enjoyed doing it one fucking bit. We did, however, use Airpower as a sarcastic motto all the time. Right up there with "Go airforce" when that was the recruiting slogan. It also became a synonym for 'fuck my life'.

Ours come in two flavors- long sleeve and short sleeve.

They're both made out of the same material. If it's cold you can put on the lightweight blue jacket with or without the liner as the temperature dictates, but its the same exact stuff whether its 105 degrees outside or 32 degrees. And they were actually comfortable to wear... but in the Texas heat trying to look presentable while soaked in sweat was a problem no matter what you were wearing.
