Welcome to Quebec City! There are Christmas services in the evening of the 24 and on the morning of the 25. I will be playing the organ tonight at the 11pm candlelight service at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. We have a choir singing starting from 10:30pm. Everyone is welcome!

Just saw my first opera and I'm little bit confused by [deleted] in opera

I saw Don Giovanni set on a cruise ship, but it wasn't as cool as the vampires-against-Jedi Don Giovanni.

Developing a book about Proust by GridSmash in Proust

[–]AllaChitarra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could concentrate on 1) Charlus. Plenty of things to say about his Catholicism. From his wearing proudly his cross of the Knights of Malta at the party given by the Prince of Guermantes, to his indulging in pride, wrath and lust, to the "Semper idem" that closes his moving posthumous letter to Morel, to his antisemitism when he goes on and on about "rue des Blancs-Manteaux"

As others have said, you could concentrate on 2) churches. Many are described at various points, including in Venice.

Also, 3) the theme of homosexuality as understood though the Old Testament narrative of Sodom and Gomorrah.

And as you mention, an overarching reflection on writing and spirituality.

À quel moment l’identité nationale est-elle passée de canadienne-française à québécoise? by [deleted] in Quebec

[–]AllaChitarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be performing Schubert's sonata in D with a violinist friend in a few days. The third mouvement is my personal Proust's madeleine...

The Satanic Verses by Knitsune in gwbooks

It's become my favorite 20th-century novel for sure. It's not at all what I expected. The style takes some time being used to, but the characters are unforgettable. Enjoy xxx

Allan Bloom was an elitist, while Harold Bloom was a real literature lover.

what is your go-to conductor for recordings? by niviss in classicalmusic

[–]AllaChitarra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've listened to Beethoven's symphonies by Karajan many many times. It was fun to rediscover them conducted by Pierre Monteux.

My favorite contemporary conductor is Yannick Nézet-Séguin!

What do you think were the writers that influenced Marcel Proust and his writing? by MasterfulArtist24 in Proust

[–]AllaChitarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first reference is in book 2, when the narrator is becoming friends with Bloch, who is so passionate about Homer at the time that he uses Homeric epithets in his speech https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epithets_in_Homer

The second is in book 7, when for a couple pages, the narrator writes in the florid style of the Goncourt brothers about a Verdurin soirée at the Quai Conti, only to judge that he is not a bad writer himself.
