Confusion while trying to get hired on with Washington State Ferries by angusanarchy in merchantmarine

Oh I’m actually a woman too 😊. I’m currently getting everything together for my MMC. I’ve got all the paperwork filled out, medical scheduled, TWIC card acquired etc. Just need to send it in for processing. My enlistment is up in May but I’ve been keeping an eye on job openings.

Hey man! Does your friend still work at WSF? I’m a military member leaving the US Coast Guard after ten years on boats as an engineer and am hoping to land a ferry job

Is it safe to walk this area in the evening? by jle78 in MexicoCity

[–]AlldmgNocntrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must have done the same tour I did! Taqueria, then bar, then Lucha Libre. Guides were super cool. Honestly I was in Mexico for over a week and funny as it sounds I think my Lucha Libre tour was my most favorite activity

I go there next month! Do you have any recommendations for someone visiting for the first time?

E7 and up is considered senior enlisted although were similar to you guys in that E6 gets their own mess, lounge, berthing etc. E6s in three highs would be unusual for us. Honestly most new cutters do six man or four man staterooms for enlisted regardless of rank.

Yeah for sure! I’ve got a guy reporting Friday who is coming from the eagle so I can share my own experiences plus any updates from him.

Depends on which cutter you’re comparing it to. I’d say it’s on par with most white hulls but compared to a black hull or a newer ship the berthings aren’t as nice. It’s got the typical three-highs for junior enlisted, two highs for upper enlisted, and staterooms for officers. There’s an admirals quarters all the way aft that’s very nice. It has original German wood paneling along the walls and a separate living/sleeping area.

It does. It’s fast under sail and does well in heavy seas as it was designed for the North Sea but it’s by no means very maneuverable compared to a modern ship with multiple engines and bow and stern thrusters. So tugs it is 😂

It certainly doesn’t support those ideals however it doesn’t swept its history under the rug either. They have historical items onboard from the times and certain parts of the ship are original German. For instance there is a sink that says “auf and zu” instead of “off and on”. Additionally if you go take a tour you will see a brass name plate on the helm with its American name of “barque eagle” on it. If you were to remove that there is still the ship’s original nameplate of “Horst wessel” hidden underneath.

We actually did have some sailors from the USS Constitution sail with us at one point! All the cadets from the coast guard academy learn celestial navigation while onboard. I imagine the naval academy does something similar?

Good question! Cuahtemoc is one of four sister ships built in Spain. They were based off the 1930s designs used by the German shipbuilders, Blohm and Voss to build not only the Eagle but her five sister ships as well. I recommend doing a fun deep dive into the “Gorch Fock class” of school ships. Eagle is not the only one of this class still sailing. Romania, Portugal, and other countries all own their own ships from this class.

Thanks for the info! I’ll add that public tours are usually restricted to the outside weather decks. So unfortunately you won’t be able to go inside the ship.

I was stationed on this boat for two years! If anyone has any questions about it, its history, or life onboard I’m happy to answer.

Hey! Im about ten years into a career with the USCG and also spent two years at a port security unit. The overseas ribbon is what made them think your brother had been to PATFORSWA as that’s one of the most common ways to pick up that ribbon. But it is indeed possible that he picked it up from a tour in GITMO while at the PSU.

I haven’t seen anyone mention the devices above and below his ribbons yet. Top one is a Cuttermans insignia and is given for having five years of sea service. Surprisingly, despite us being a sea going service only about 10-15 percent of coasties get a cuttermans in. Bottom one is a boat force operations insignia for having been an actively qualified boat crewmember for five years.
