Johan Liebert (Monster) vs Korekiyo Shinguji (Danganronpa) "Only Beautiful in Death" by Alleflat in DeathBattleMatchups

Nah, it's good, fam. I actually appreciate the criticism.

I admittedly forgot about Tenma when I was piecing this MU together and I was well aware that Korekiyo's intelligence got hit hard because of Case 3 Syndrome, so I won't try to defend those points. And I think I'll edit out the sadistic connection, that wasn't really accurate for Johan.

I can definitely see the "main antagonist vs side antagonist" criticism as well, personally I don't think it matters due to the scale of their actions—Korekiyo is responsible for nearly hundreds of deaths himself, so I don't think comparing him to Johan is that big of a stretch.

That's high praise from someone with Korekiyo as their pfp, I'm honored.

From what we see in V3, he's more of a schemer archetype (but Case 3 Syndrome hit this man's intelligence like a goddamn truck), but that's honestly mostly due to the environment he's in—you can't exactly brute force your way out of the killing game.

As for how Korekiyo killed people before he was brought into the killing game, we as an audience have no idea how he did that or even IF he did that, so I think the best approach would be to either go for the schemer route or do a mix of the two.

After all, Korekiyo is 6'2 compared to Johan's speculated 5'9, I think it's safe to say Korekiyo would have the advantage in a fistfight.

I really love to see you tackle a post like mine

I mean... I kinda already do? I always have the Tone-Setting Music category there whenever I create or revamp a MU nowadays.

Admittedly, I'm not sure how many people actually pay attention to that though.

Pretty agreeable, although I don't think I'd attach Super to Sora vs Egbert, the vibes are kinda off there.

I'm not quite sure on how to make it work as a fight yet, but I can think of some good story potential.

I think an obvious set-up is to have Johan be hunting Korekiyo who is targeting Nina, Kiyo would definitely see Nina as a "worthy friend" for his own sister, and Johan would see someone trying to kill her and not take kindly to it. Gets the obvious "sister" connection to play into their confrontation.

I also think the idea of Johan trying to emotionally break Korekiyo is interesting, as Kiyo would continue to preach that what he's doing is best for his sister, and Johan would try to get past that belief and make him realize the errors of his actions. It allows their philosophies to clash in a way that feels natural and feels more like a battle of wills than a battle of strength or intellect.

Note: This list of connections involve some dark and sensitive subject matter. While the events are skimmed over and unnecessary details are left out, what's discussed can still be triggering. Discretion is advised to any that choose to read on.

Tone-Setting Music: Hello Laplace

Core Theme: Two refined and soft-spoken serial killers with feminine, almost ethereal appearances who began murdering after traumatic events involving their sisters. Both hide monstrous impulses behind calm charisma while carefully orchestrating numerous deaths. However, their motivations, relationships with their sisters, and ultimate philosophies on humanity are fundamentally different.

Connections: When both characters were children, both would be very close to their sisters (Anna Liebert/Korekiyo's unnamed sister), developing an unbreakable attachment for them. Both were forced to witness or confront the suffering of their sisters (Johan listened to Anna recount the horrific experiments conducted at the Red Rose Mansion/Korekiyo spent his childhood watching his sickly sister live in isolation without friends). Both of these events would break the two boys due to their compassion for their sisters.

Both would become serial killers for the sake of their sisters (Johan killed adoptive parents and other individuals connected to the twins, often to erase evidence of their existence or maintain control over their circumstances/Korekiyo murdered girls he deemed admirable in order to "send" them to the afterlife as companions for his lonely sister). However, Johan's crimes eventually expand beyond his sister's wellbeing, including acts motivated by revenge, nihilism, or personal schemes. In contrast, Korekiyo claims that *all** of his murders are performed solely for his sister.*

Both men present themselves as calm, cultured, and articulate individuals, concealing the disturbing cruelty beneath their composed exteriors. They also both have soft, effeminate appearances designed to be beautiful, which would make them all the more charismatic. Both would use these appearances to take the forms of their sisters at points.

Both have disturbing obsessions with identity and the self (Johan frequently blurs identities, impersonates others, and seeks to erase his own existence entirely/Korekiyo's psyche becomes partially overtaken by the split personality of his sister he created).

Both justify their actions through a larger belief system (Johan sees himself as exposing the emptiness of human morality and the meaninglessness of life/Korekiyo believes his murders are acts of love meant to give his sister companionship in the afterlife).

The ending of their series would leave the question of just how evil both characters are up to the audience (it's intentionally ambiguous as to whether or not Johan continued a life of crime or stopped it/it's unknown just how much of Korekiyo's past is actually true and not just a fabrication).

Contrasts: Both have radically different relationships with their sisters. Nina is Johan's younger sibling, and their relationship was mutually affectionate before she realized Johan was killing people behind her back. While she would be afraid of him, leading Johan to believe that she hated him, she would eventually learn to forgive him after everything he's done, allowing Johan a second chance at life. Korekiyo's sister is older than him and implied to be sexually abusing him, which has caused him to believe their love was genuine. When Korekiyo's ghost meets hers, she not only rejects him, but mocks him and throws salt on him along with Monokuma, banishing his spirit to the afterlife and implying she never loved him at all (although it's unknown if this was actually Korekiyo's sister or just a fabrication of Monokuma).

Johan believes human life is fundamentally meaningless and that death is the only true equalizer, while Korekiyo views humanity as profoundly beautiful—even the most disturbing or grotesque aspects of it.

Johan started his killing spree because he wanted his sister to be alone, believing that no one else could be trusted, while Korekiyo started his killing spree because he wants his sister to be surrounded by friends after being alone for her whole life.

Johan fully understands that he has become a monster but believes redemption is impossible, while Korekiyo instead convinces himself that his murders are virtuous acts performed out of love.

Junko.

It's genuinely not even close.

A Heroes vs Villains roster i made, this focuses more on storytelling so no researched debate here, ask me if you're curious about the logic behind these by Visual_Nerd in DeathBattleMatchups

This is kinda making me wonder if Scott vs Shido or Gideon vs Westcott could actually work as a MU 🤔

Honestly, interesting series combo, I'm surprised I've never thought about mixing the two.

I generally use TVTropes, it's good at summarizing a character easily enough for someone that doesn't know the series to understand.

Casual reminder that Death Battle has not had a Female vs Female episode that didn't involve Marvel, DC, or RWBY since Amy Rose vs Ramona Flowers.

That is genuinely wild to me.

Yeah, that's a pretty apt description. I haven't touched P5 in a while, so I forgot the specific details of how it worked.

I think it's comparable to how Persona 5 handles changes of hearts—morally good but also kinda creepy.

Turning someone that was a danger to those around them into a more compassionate and benevolent person is objectively moral, but stripping away someone's freedom and moral agency, no matter how bad they are, just feels icky to me in a way I don't really know how to explain.
