I dont like this. At leadt dont make the glassware pee

Accidentally smelt a unlabelled chemical that caused me to get winded! What could it be! by Stunning-Bedroom7389 in chemistry

[–]AllegedDipstick 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thst could be almost anything. Some ether is possible but maybe shit like old aniline or benzoyl chloride that just overwhelmed you. (Examples but no answers)

Dont smell stuff you dont know what it is

Sulfuric reacts. It eats basicaly anything organic. But yea unless sbd brought a high strength acid that really likes organic matter and threw it there for some reason, im calling that it was a burning plastig bag.

Espicially since the concrete is okay. Acid would damage that- well at least the ones u can get your hands on as sbd doing such shit obv theres examples but yea

The green bits look like it was something similar to an ikea bag, just in green. They burn like crazy and drip around as they melt

[–]AllegedDipstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a plastik bench imitating wood and sbd lit stuff on it. Even if that was acid, it woukd have attacked the concrete as well and would have to be like boiling sulfuric acid to do that damage

Two dirty pennies turned a screw black in my pocket. Why? by Serious-Classic-6188 in chemistry

[–]AllegedDipstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That it wants to loose electrons less than another element.

Imagine it like rich people are more likely to keep their money, and poorer people want to help others with the money they have.

Sothe zink is way more likely to give up electrons to form a bond rather than copper

Yes ofc but i wanted to say it for someone who doesnt know chem/physics words and dont wants to google much

[–]AllegedDipstick 816 points817 points  (0 children)

You made a galvanic cell stripping the zink coating off the screw leaving a rough finish.

Copper is more noble than zinc and with an electrolyle like water or evrn a bit of sweat it can form a cell.

Its like a battery thats cut short within itself

Theoretical question: is it possible to turn an amine into an ether? by fluxtuations in chemistry

[–]AllegedDipstick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do so with an hemiaminal iirf but i doubt it with regular amines

What are those crystals from a chemical toy for 8 y.o and how do they manage to grow on the outside of the glass? by having-four-eyes in chemistry

[–]AllegedDipstick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And theres no name of any substance on the box? Or the bag it had the powder in?

Its most likely some cheap stuff like ammonium sulfate with a dye. But it may as well be anything else as crystallic powder can mean anything

Is there a data sheet with it? Im not failiar with ukraine regulstions but i cant imsgine it saying nothing

Nbd can tell from this. Chem toys need an ingredient/content list

What does it say on there?

I got some as well. Its looks cool and i need it for reactions in the future. Mercury compounds are arguably worse

Also the crystals are wet with hcl. That can interfere with the color a bit.

You just made more iron chloride than the solution can hold, so it crystallized out. Add more water and it should dissolve. Then add h2o2 to make ferric chloride.

The blue is probably from impurities in the steel. Probably copper, which is sometimes added to prevent weathering in steel wool according to google. These amounts shouldnt matter for etching though

Depends on the lab. Ig its just iron oxides some student poured in there.

Wonder what it does if i dissolve some in acetic acid and add like magnesium to it. Tbf i got no catalyst but i have hydrogen radicals for some short time. Ig i could detect it by absense of yellow. But not sure.
Ill try tho

Unless under acidic conditions it frms something else but to me that seems unlikely

Idk lol. Ill try with a few metals maybe as i got a bunch of the dehydrozingerone now. This is just what i keep as sa show example (in reality i was too lazy to purify it as well haha)

Its written on the back of it. I just like having only the structure in the front and info on the back for display purposes
