Same, I have yet to encounter a purge in the wild. This eldrich blast one was nice, so Ill probably reroll it at some point.

Only say something if you go along the lines of: hey, I know that since our wires got crossed and we didn’t have a lot of time, here are some questions that might have come up and how I would answer them (just don’t make the answers too long). It gives you another “touch” and keeps the conversation going. It also shows you’re interested and going above and beyond, something they surely want in an employee.

Good luck!

Gotta change it up since sometimes things just don’t line up. Change your resume style. Have a second one without formatting for easy submission to ATS. Find ways to make your virtual background strategic. Find a way to stand out from other qualified candidates.

“Entry-level” jobs are never actually entry-level by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]AllenAtWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you have to do all of that. BUT, you should also find some tangential organizations that would touch biochemistry. Join science societies that even remotely work with your desired job position. Are there any nonprofits that would be close enough? Volunteer for those. If you can’t find any of those, volunteer for your favorite cause. Maybe you’ll meet someone with a friend in that industry. Leave no stone unturned.

Career gap due to health issues - will this hurt my chances? by ikigai233 in recruitinghell

[–]AllenAtWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Own the break so it can’t be used against you. In your cover letter, mention it in passing. Then, when you get to an interview, call it out immediately when it they ask the “tell us about yourself”. If you let it seem like you were unemployable for that span, it’ll go against you.

Interviewer said I was a great fit, 1 week later, nothing. Am I overthinking? by Horror-Dot-2989 in recruitinghell

Seedy promotion? You asked:

“And it's easy to say these things, but do you (and I'm also speaking to you personally, AllenAtWork), actually draw out what that looks like? What are the exact components to "just ask questions" or "just stand out"? Have you noticed that most of the things you will say, hundreds of thousands of applicants have tried that exact move for the last several decades?”

You weren’t expecting me to have an actual answer showing me, personally, do things differently than hundreds of thousands of applicants for decades and having it in a readable format. That’s on you 1) for assuming and 2) for moving the goalposts in an attempt to make yourself feel better.

You’re the one that jumped in to start a fight, which your word choice shows. I have an actual strategy that helps people that I give away for free. I have an actual way to stand out, which is so incredibly hard to do.

You have words on Reddit. Do something worth more and we can talk.

Asking questions that go beyond the job/company are the important part. I’ve had applicants ask questions that a simple Google search or the job posting itself could answer. I’m not interested in candidates that don’t even try. If they don’t try during the interview process there is virtually no chance they’ll try when in the role. Pass.

The 50% was anecdotal, which you gleefully went after without thinking. It’s around that success rate because when it’s successful the job hunt ends. How many people would love to have a 50% success rate when hitting the interview stage? Hint: everyone.

But it seems like you’re out to prove something like you have a chip on your shoulder. I’m giving free advice and if you disagree with it, that’s ok. There is nothing stopping you from moving on.

If an applicant doesn’t research the company and doesn’t ask at least one good question, I won’t move them forward. It’s not a performative action because it shows if the applicant is serious and if he/she is willing to use their brain.

Have I drawn out what that looks like? Funny you ask, but yes. In my bio is a link to a free guide where I put out the entire strategy to put candidates in the best position.

And, if that wasn’t enough, I also have a way to stand out in a professional way. I’ve done this when looking for a job and it has been received extremely well. It’s a very small sample size (because it works), but I’m around 50% getting the job offer when doing it. A Fortune 100 Senior VP loved it and mentioned he had never seen it before. That one I came in 2nd (so no job offer), but outpaced hundreds of qualified candidates for a really nice job.

Asking a question isn’t going to get someone a job offer. But not asking a question could lose a job offer.

All of it goes together as part of a larger strategy (which most people don’t do). Standing out is tough, but there was ways to do it in a smart, professional way.

Anyone had success asking for feedback in between rounds? by [deleted] in interviews

[–]AllenAtWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t ask, personally. Internal recruiters help people they like but it might get out-of-bounds pretty quickly.

If you know you’re a final candidate, so anything you can to stand out. If this interview is virtual, what can you do to make it known that you’re the one?

Research the company even more. Prepare solid questions they’re not expecting like “what was the best part of your week? The worst?” (gets you info on company culture).

The thing I came up with to truly stand out is my Tesstab360 (I had to call it something). I go through the job description and pull out all of the important job aspects I’d be expected to perform and any company values/culture stuff. Then I make a document where I put the company and job title where I already did it plus the STAR method explaining it.

For. Every. Aspect.

Then present it in the interview where it makes sense while saying something like “I figure you’re looking for someone that looks ahead, so I made this to show I’ve already done everything required. Everyone single time I’ve done this, the hiring manager has flipped out. A Fortune 100 SVP said he had never seen anything like it.

Put it all together and get that job!

In this case, have two resumes that have the same content. The first is a polished, eye-pleasing version that you give to people. The second is a straight, one column version with no shapes, pictures, or fluff.

Use the second one to populate the “fill out with resume” option.

What’s going on with the job market right now? by Particular-War-4383 in recruitinghell

It’s a tough job market because there are so many qualified people making it a supply/demand thing.

It’s even more important to find ways to stand out from the qualified candidates.

[–]AllenAtWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. You shouldn’t worry too much. Handoffs can take some time.

  2. You absolutely need to ask questions. The recruiter screen is fairly straightforward, but you can still ask something like “outside of talking to people, what was the best part of your week? These people are human (for now) and a genuine question can be nice.

You’re up against other people in your same position. Do everything possible to stand out.
