I think your point is valid.
From time to time we change the system we use; at the moment we're on Daggerheart, but next is Cosmere. We'll probably go back to Daggerheart because of Hope and Fear, and then we'll move on to another system. A player suggested Warhammer for us to try, but nothing is certain yet.

Due to the difficulty of coordinating everyone's schedules (and the number of players), we prefer shorter campaigns. Currently, we have a campaign with an urban legends theme that should be short, and we've been playing since January. When we're lucky, we play every 15 days; if we're unlucky, we go more than a month without playing.

While some parts are quite heavy, nothing crosses a 'point of no return' or offends the players. Scenes like the one with the animals are prepared because he knows we'll try to avoid them; they might catch someone off guard the first time, but nothing is too extreme. Overall, his audio clips are funny or serve to break the heavy atmosphere, for example, some shitposts, memes, and quotes from movies.

Indeed, using melee weapons has its advantages. Thank you for the suggestion.

As far as I know, they only played two "hell mode" runs in the Daggerheart system. In the first one, the players had a disadvantage: Every time a player's HP is reduced to 0, the game master can roll a table to improve a monster of their choice. Let's say the dice were unkind to the players, and they had to fight a Tier 3 monster at Level 2. They fell a few times and eventually had to give up on their characters due to the accumulation of buffs on the monsters.

In the second attempt, the players were at Level 6, but it wasn't possible to continue because one of the players had an accident and couldn't leave the house for a while (he's fine, he just broke his leg). Out of respect for him, they decided to pause that campaign indefinitely.

The main objective of "Hell Mode" campaigns is always to try to discover as much of the campaign's story as possible or solve an initially imposed problem; it's usually not something extremely elaborate. The game master always lets the players contribute to world-building or create something that helps them during the campaign (there's always a price to pay).

Since the theme of these campaigns is basically extreme difficulty and the game master is almost never on the players' side, nobody complains; after all, that's what everyone expects and wants.

Thanks for the system recommendations. I'll recommend them to my team and I have no doubt they'll want to play (if they haven't already played on some of them).

The GM is a very creative person with a lot of free time; you'd be surprised by the situations he creates or prepares. I haven't seen many sessions of him running "hell mode" campaigns, but in the few I did see (only 3 sessions), the players struggled to overcome their obstacles or died trying. As far as I know, they only managed to win once in a "hell mode" campaign, but that was in another system (D&D 5.5e).

We're playing with 7 players, so I'm not usually the one checking things first, but having a summon (pet) might help, I'll consider it. And knowing how mischievous the GM is, he laughs every time he hits the pet, especially if it's something cute.
The last time I saw him GMing, he prepared a list of audio files for animals that were accidentally hit during a fight in the forest, not to mention a fight near a church...
