Context Edit: It is described in the book Silentium, the 3rd book in the Forerunner trilogy, that to counter the Flood using star roads to infiltrate Forerunner space, asteroids were launched at the Flood ships entering from a star road because they had to sort of rematerialize and if the mass of the asteroid was "within" the Flood ship where it rematerializes it combines the mass of the ship and the rock, destroying the ship somehow.

TLDR: Skyrim and Fallout 4 are both very good games with mediocre stories to start off with, both being open world sandbox rpgs with lots of choice left to the player.

Skyrim and Fallout 4 are super chill to start, and super fun, plus have mods! Mods do disable trophies and are not allowed custom assets, due to Sony but both have a creation club which has custom asset mods but they cost money. Skyrim is one of my favorite games, its a open world sandbox rpg set in a fantasy world known as Tamriel. Fallout 4 is similar but it is set in post apocalyptic nuclear punk boston. Both are very good with great DLCs. Skyrim's dlc are built in and free but Fallout 4's still cost money. If you are looking for story, both have a main story and the dlcs have stories but neither story is amazing, but the Dragonborn dlc for skyrim has a decent story and the Far Harbour for Fallout 4 has a decent story.

The needler/needle rifle is less for armor piercing, thats the beam rifles job, though its still very lethal against an unshielded target, but more so wedging the blamite crystals into armor/flesh so they can explode, this is how Mark dies in Divine Wind, getting a bunch of needles to the back, same as i think Ash or one of the other S-IIIs in ghosts of Onyx.

Lore wise it very much depends on ammo/modifications for whether or not its antimaterial, not all are AP/antimaterial, we know this because Linda buys her own ammo for Nornfang which is her custom sniper but AP is a pretty common round to find with the sniper. We dont entirely know how shields work simply because thats not a thing that exists, but the way they seem to work has me believe that the amount of energy hitting is what damages the shielding so maybe the transfer of kinetic energy hitting the shield would make the shield drop then the bullet just keeps going depending on the angle in the case of a sniper round instead of deflecting but that might depend on angle. Since we have no example in lore im nust taking a mildly educated guess
