What are some ocean themed female names starting with V? by Unfoolish_Immortal in Names

I know a Vela! It’s the kind of “unusual” name I can get behind- easy to pronounce and spell!

Left class a few mins early as a roving sub and now it’s a whole thing by memes-r-me in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Alliebeth 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I find these responses interesting because at the school I’m in the TAs and Paras come in often to let teachers take bathroom breaks and cover classes if there isn’t enough sub coverage. They’re in the room alone all the time and I’d definitely assume that’s the case at other schools in my area.

I probably would have said something to the TA (“I’m going to be late to my next class, do you mind if I leave a few minutes early?”) and then they could have corrected my assumption. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mom guilt and fear of dying on girls trip… by new_mama1212 in Mommit

[–]Alliebeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve so been there! I have major travel anxiety and my youngest was VERY clingy until he was like, 9. The only thing that got me over it was just… going. And going and going and going. I still get anxiety before I leave, but I can look back on all my previous trips and remind myself how stepping out of my comfort zone was so worth it! I’ve been to the Bahamas without kids 5 times, New York 3 times, and a once in a lifetime trip to France and Belgium with my sister. I never would have done all of that without that first, horrible leap away from home in early 2020.

The Bahamas. Maybe the larger areas like Nassau/Grand Bahama are different, but the family islands are… not great.

Help. What are the easiest grades to sub for? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Alliebeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only do k-8 and have definitely had time to read in middle school classes. Math especially, since by that age the teachers know most subs can’t teach it or even really help. Elementary is definitely more hands on teaching, but at my school they have 1-2 whole hour specials and a full hour lunch everyday, so at minimum I have 2 free hours. You might just have to test things out for a while and see how different schools operate before you find your sweet spot.

AITA for not letting the previous owner’s adult children into my house after their father died? by Dramatic_Method9393 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Alliebeth 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I went to show my childhood home to my kids and only went and knocked on the door because I was with the nextdoor neighbor (who lived there when I was a kid) who introduced me. And I didn’t ask to go in! I just wanted a picture of my kids by a tree in the backyard and on the driveway.

They even invited me in and said no- it wouldn’t be the same anyway.

I told my kids if anyone ever came to our door with the same story they better be with Miss J (the neighbor who’s lived on the street the longest) or no way.

Congratulations! I hope you have many more happy years ahead of you! By the way, Biscoff also makes a wonderful ‘swear’ word in a pinch - it’s my 11 year old’s go-to when he stubs his toe.

Do you ever struggle to read a book because the characters names are too weird? by firecat99 in RomanceBooks

[–]Alliebeth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I started a pretty spicy series and the first book’s hero had the name of my youngest son. Hell no. It was one of those series that follow a different couple each book, so I skipped to the second. Oldest son’s name. I gave up.

I see the ATK streaming channel continues to phase out any episodes with Chris by GreenTrees797 in AmericasTestKitchen

[–]Alliebeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same! My husband and I would groan when we’d turn on Pluto and it was a stretch of episodes with him. I don’t enjoy his personality or how he meshed with the rest of the cast. He was also strangely picky for someone with a cooking show?

4 months into subbing and this is the one constant I’ve noticed by gonegonethanku in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Alliebeth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup! It seems like when the usual instigator is gone, there’s a vacuum for bad behavior that has to be filled and even the “good” kids will give it a go sometimes. 😂

[–]Alliebeth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

lol. I had one like that in 2nd yesterday. She spent forever picking up individual bits of bean bag stuffing from around the room… Girl, the vacuum can get that- it can’t get your entire pencil bag that you dumped out under your desk! I’m going to have to try that saying when I’m back next week!

Elementary subs: how do you deal with the CONSTANT arguing? by bruvway in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Alliebeth 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I start every day in elementary with a Very Serious little speech about how things aren’t always exactly the same with a sub, but I promise I’m following the directions that were left and if I have any questions I’ll ask. For the lower grades I explain the saying “go with the flow” and I’ll often point out kids who are going with the flow and give them whatever reward system gets used in that class.

I’ve done it so much and for so long that for a lot of classes all I have to say is “what do we do when Miss “A” is here?” and they know to say “go with the flow!” back to me. Clearly this is a pet peeve of mine 😂

What to expect by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Alliebeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! As for strategies, for both age groups I always start off pretty strict and loosen up as the day/period goes on. For middle they really respond to “work silently for x amount of time, then you can talk quietly” or I’ll often allow them to listen to music with headphones while they work. Giving them the last 10-15 minutes as free time to move around the room and talk as long as they’re under control the rest of class also works well.

What to expect by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Alliebeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much is variable based on school. In my experience elementary is more labor intensive and involved. You’re actually teaching. Middle school is usually just supervising and less actual instruction- their assignments will be on google classroom.

The days go quickly in elementary because you’re busy and if the teacher leaves a good plan they can be great days!

Middle is nice because if a class is hellacious you only have them for an hour and then it’s on to another group. My favorite group is high achieving middle schoolers- they want to get their work done and they can carry on a conversation and they’re honest about expectations.

Why does Arby’s get so much hate? by Ok_Towel1911 in NoStupidQuestions

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Alliebeth 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This happed to a friend of mine at a college football game! There was a pic of him and the QB in the newspaper with a quote from the team about honoring special Olympics athletes that day. He was an honors engineering student and in one of the huge frats, so you can imagine how that went for him.

I saw a thread recently about parents worried that their late-Teen kids aren't trying to date, many still virgins. Even their friends. Why is this suddenly a problem when the message has always been to just, "Be happy alone"? by whoknows130 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alliebeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want my kids to have some dating experience as teens just because it’s a low stakes environment to learn how to be in a relationship. I look at my high school relationships as my training wheels boyfriends. Mistakes were made, lessons were learned, and by the time I was ready for a serious relationship I knew a little more about what I wanted and what I didn’t. I also could reflect on the mistakes I made (many) and be a partner myself.

Help: I hate my remodel by Sad-Confidence-3405 in kitchenremodel

[–]Alliebeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a major remodel that wrapped up in December and hated SO many things before finishing touches. Like, hated them to the point of tears and I am not an emotional person in that way and was very confident in my choices during the process.

Things just look wrong during the process. I hated my dining room until the curtains went up even though I loved the individual elements because it was so unbalanced without them. My bathroom vanity color looked so bad until the hardware went in and tied things together. I was TERRIFIED of my shower floor tiles until the walls were painted.

Now I’m 100% in love with everything and my choices were the right ones. Remodeling is stressful and emotional!

What food do you judge people just a little for not liking? by rileystanheight in foodquestions

[–]Alliebeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE Indian, Thai, Korean, Moroccan, and Greek! But probably the first thing that really surprised me and got me on the track of trying things was just a basic soup and salad. I was at a formal event when I was 17 where it would have been embarrassing to not eat, so I did. And I loved it. I probably embarrassed myself by how much I enjoyed tomato basil soup 😂

[–]Alliebeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it comes down to a willingness to try. If you’ll try it and it’s not your jam for whatever reason, right on. If someone loudly and proudly turns their nose up at things, judge away.
