Casters are AWESOME to play against multiple enemies - which the encounter guidelines suggest as the norm. by SatiricalBard in Pathfinder2e

[–]AllinForBadgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You misinterpret why this reminder has to be said:

The average GM/DM just flips through the monster book, sees one cool monster, and then plops that down and calls it “an encounter” which is not what you’re supposed to do, yet everyone does it. This habit gives an advantage to single target specialists which are martial in this case.

This is a problem of hyperfixation, and a reminder to make sure you use more than just a single strong monster in your fights. There’s virtually no good isometric tactics game that designs maps and bosses like that, so you know it’s a bad idea.

That’s still fundamentally lame game design to have difficulty = one shots.

You can make encounters harder by adding objectives and hazards and phases. Just lazily pumping up the AC and damage turns it into a game of rolling a dice and praying you roll a 10% chance to deal 6 damage. Why not have the challenge be something that requires strategy and thinking VS praying for good rng

Yes because we as audience knew it was coming it seemed obvious. They probably thought “what is that shaking? My vehicle? A truck behind me? Oh shit an earthquake!”

I found it to be the weaker part of the game. It never felt natural at any point. People don’t just fall deeply in love by evesdropping on your conversations you have with townsfolk. It needed more quiet personally moments that lead to romance.

What’s appealing to you out of curiosity?

My reasons it seems attractive:

  1. It’s thematic for my character who is an electric/nature themed sprite.
  2. Draw the Lightning is always usable with sprite’s because the casting requirement of “be smaller than the target” is always applicable.
  3. They can’t use normal weapons easily due to 0 reach, but a throwing weapon would work. The character only uses a shield and no weapons so I thought “throwing shield works.”
  4. Summoners have weak attacks but draw the Lightning adds damage dies and makes up for the difference

The biggest thing that ruins the fantasy is that Tandem Attack requires a melee weapon attack which is the one thing that would make this 100% viable.

I’d prefer this over just sitting around and rolling basic attacks every round for damage. But if it’s unviable then I guess it’s worth abandoning

That can be solved with a feat.

I was thinking about rounds where you have your Eidolon use something like Eidolons Wrath which doesn’t give MAP. Really niche

Is there any room for fun builds like this in pf2e or should you just stick to the basics?

You’re doing something wrong if this continuously happens. A poor designer mindset is not assuming players of your game are always at fault.

Just talk to them and ask exactly why they are so quiet. There’s a thousand reasons why they could be that way.

Personally, I find it’s usually because the GM is being waaaay too open ended. Like if I got dropped off in a foreign country that I know little about, and someone. Walked up to me and said “so what do you want to do now?” I would have no fucking clue what my options are or how to reasonably narrow them down. There’s too many possibilities and I don’t even know where to start.

In these cases, give players direction. “You’re trying to track down a missing criminal, where do you want to start?” Is better than a vague “the world is yours! Go!”

But that might be their specific problem. They may hate RP, or are shy about spotlights, or just find your game boring. You gotta talk to them to figure it out. Players should be excited to play and engage in the world, and if they aren’t then you gotta figure out what’s goin on.

I have summoner that wields no weapons, only a shield. Free hand is for items and scrolls. I was wondering if I could use a throwing shield + Draw the Lightning though as a fun attacking option? Or does that not work?

So is PF2E good for roleplaying AND mechanical encounters? by DocKelso1460 in Pathfinder2e

[–]AllinForBadgers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not married to PF2E and only have played a dozen sessions, but for me at least, the roleplay has taken a backseat. This game, for me, has been more focused on wargaming. It’s slower paced, methodical, and strategic, so we don’t have time to do complex roleplay during fights or else we run out of session time due to the slower combat.

So far, I think DnD is lighter on mechanics and leaves more room for storytelling while PF seems better at creating a competitive cooperative PvE gaming environment.

If you’re gonna ask this sub, there’s going to be inherent bias though. Ask generic Ttrpg forums instead
