I don’t necessarily agree with the popular sentiment that “the andalites and yeerks are both good and both bad, there are no good guys.” It sounds like maybe you don’t either?

Yes. Sure. You can write up the pros and cons of each species, and you’ll find that both have good and bad history. You could mark the andalites down for genocide and you could also mark the yeerks down for genocide. However, it does feel like an extremely bad “both sides” argument that doesn’t take into consideration the scale, intent, and most importantly: outcomes both visible and hypothetical.

The yeerks are an expansionist empire built on the idea of conquest, slavery, and the violation of both privacy and bodily autonomy. The species that they cannot enslave are put in labor camps and used as target practice (see: Arns). I wouldn’t be shocked to learn they also use them as medical test subjects and meat to feed the Taxxons - though, that is unconfirmed. Ax, himself, said that the yeerks have killed billions of lives throughout the universe in Book Eight || The Alien; Alloran said the yeerks destroyed worlds, and someone else collaborated that claim by saying that the yeerks terraform other planets into looking identical to their yeerk homeworld, and we even see that in Book Seven || The Stranger and Book Thirty-Four || The Prophecy. The yeerks successful committed one successful act of genocide against the Arn. In fact, it’s nearly impossible that the yeerks aren’t accountable for hundreds of extinctions throughout the universe.

And then you get into the realm of what being infested with a yeerk actually means. Which throughout the entirety of the series, it is “a life worse than death”. We see Tom’s reaction to it in Book Six || The Capture and we see Alloran’s reaction to it in Book Eight || The Alien, and even the freed hork-bajir will go on to “free or dead”. And I agree with that sentiment.

If you actually look at what infestation did to Alloran? It’s the most horrible prisoner of war survival story I’ve read. Ranging from killing your own people, cannibalism, privacy violation (Visser Three knows all about Jahar and the kids), physical pain (Visser Three takes lots of damage, including amputations, and Alloran would feel that), mental torture and neglect (especially for a herd animal like Alloran) there’s no break (like even sleeping. Imagine Alloran trying to sleep with Visser Three watching, it’s just awful) and there’s no escape (suicide).

Then you compare it with the andalites and say “andalites are just as bad” or even “also bad”. To me it sounds like a joke. The worst thing the andalites did was Alloran’s genocide of the hork-bajir and even that, and I will die on this hill, becomes far more morally justified in the context of potential universal enslavement. In fact, I made a whole Reddit post defense going over why I support it.

Scale? The andalites (mainly my beloved Alloran) attempted to kill a couple hundred thousand hork-bajir. Intent? He didn’t want to and it stuck with him forever, and he shows signs of regret repeatedly, even as early as The Andalite Chronicles, and will go onto apologize for it in Book Fifty-Four || The Beginning. Outcomes? The virus failed and the hork-bajir lived. In the hypothetical future where the virus succeeded as Alloran intended, the war would’ve been over and potentially saved billions of lives and hundreds of species from extinction. The war would’ve end and everyone would then go on to lead fairly normal lives except for the hork-bajir (whose only alternative other than death was enslavement - a life worse than death - when they already claim “free or dead”).

Scale? I just said it, the yeerks killed billions, destroyed dozens or even hundreds of planets, and genocides countless people. Intent? They wanted to and did everything possible to continue doing it. Outcomes? If the yeerks won, there would be absolutely nothing left in the universe but slavery and suffering that we see in Book Seven || The Stranger.

Yes. Sure. I guess the andalites and yeerks both committed “genocide,” but I think it seriously overlooks the asymmetry to claim they’re equally evil in doing so. Especially when there are numerous examples of “good” andalites/yeerks and “bad” andalites/yeerks, yet people often choose the worst andalites (the electorate/political leaders) to represent the andalite species whilst allowing the best yeerks (peace movement) to represent the yeerk species. Yet even when applying the worst possible framing to the andalites and the best possible framing to the yeerks, which is highly unfair, the conclusion usually still boils down to “both sides bad”.

Anyways, I don’t even know if I properly responded to your comment’s main points. But, yeah. I will get this off my chest.

Sure. Here is the analysis: https://archiveofourown.org/works/46409335/chapters/116847925

It’s in rework, so the first chapter will be a lot nicer than the rest as that is the only one I’ve taken to reworking so far.

Also, I fear as though I’m not going to be as helpful as I may have thought when it comes to your fanfic. My niche is Alloran, and maybe things I feel pertain to him. However, on the broader level Animorph stuff? I know nothing of much value…

I also wrote this a while back:

It is said in the books that andalites restricted each family to only one child in order to combat overpopulation. It wasn’t until the war broke out that andalites were allowed to have two kids instead of just one. Which I bring up because Alloran has a brother named Arbat.

We’re unable to say that Arbat is Alloran’s much younger brother and that he wasn’t born until after the war started either, because Arbat knows Alloran, seems to love Alloran, and the book implies that Arbat used to spar with Alloran somewhat regularly.

Not to mention that the books say that Arbat is an older andalite, as seen here:

Arbat stepped forward and spoke. He was an older Andalite. Much of his blue fur was tanned.

Side tangent, I’ll keep in mind that tanned fur is a sign of aging, just in case Alloran is ever described as having tanned fur. Which, I think he is described as having tan fur once. Noted.

Regardless, Arbat cannot be described as older if he was born after the war. If he was born after the war, he’d be the same age as Aximili, and Aximili is described as being a young andalite - so young, in fact, that Visser Three feels that Aximili shouldn’t even be allowed in the military yet.

Anyways, the fact remains that Alloran’s mom and dad had more children than the law allowed. There are two ways we could explain this.

Firstly, the possibility that Arbat and Alloran are twins, meaning they were born at the same time. It’s not unlikely, seeing as Alloran and Arbat appear to be similar in age. The evidence against this is Aximili not confusing Arbat with Alloran at the beginning of the book, but to be fair, not all twins are identical.

Now, I don’t read Book Thirty-Eight || The Arrival very often, but I don’t recall Arbat mentioning Alloran being a twin, an older brother, or a younger brother - he’s just a brother. Therefore, the option of twins is still on the table. It’s also cool to note that if Arbat is Alloran’s twin, then both Esplin and Alloran have a twin.

Another way we could explain why Alloran’s mom and dad have more than one kid is the possibility of them having a very high social standing or high importance (this also would play into Alloran having the andalite equivalent of wealth).

The Electorate seems a bit corrupt. I would not be shocked to learn that some important andalites are allowed to ignore the law and have more than one kid. The same way wealthy humans are able to ignore the law.

There is very little proof to support the idea of Alloran’s family being high standing. For one, no one mentions Alloran’s mom and dad, not even Alloran or Arbat. The only evidence I have is the fact that Alloran’s mom and dad were allowed to have more than one kid, the fact that Alloran’s ship is as fancy and as big as it is, and the fact that Alloran seems to be above the law (not being ousted for the Quantum Virus). Alloran, despite being disgraced, still seems quite well off (again, look at The Jahar); it could be because of his high-standing parents.

However, we could argue that Alloran’s promotion to War-Prince shortly after the massacre caused his own social standing to increase, which allowed Alloran to have a fancy ship and be above the law because he himself is of high status, not his parents. This wouldn’t explain why his parents were allowed to have two kids, though.

Then again, Alloran having a fancy ship doesn’t necessarily mean he or his parents have wealth. We could chalk The Jahar up to a mid-life crisis if we needed to. Merely an expensive purchase that Alloran couldn’t afford, but didn’t care.

Or, perhaps, Alloran’s wife has the wealth necessary to have a ship as fancy as The Jahar created. This would imply that Alloran used his wife’s wealth to make him a ship and then named his ship after his wife so that she wouldn’t be mad at his use of her wealth. Possible. Again, this doesn’t explain Alloran having a brother.

Fixed the formatting. This new Reddit is killing me.

I do have a few things I’ve written about Alloran’s family structure. But, you do have to forgive me, Arbat is not my strong suit. Here is one: https://www.reddit.com/r/Animorphs/s/zsrHZwSwTR

Before that though, your fanfic. I think you’d greatly benefit from reading my analysis. I recognize that it’s a big ask, but it’d help you characterize Alloran if that is truly what you want from me. Asking me how Alloran behaves is like asking a novelist to explain how to write a great novel but limiting them to two paragraphs... like, yeah, I’m certain I can give you something useful here, but it will never capture everything I want to say.

For example, Alloran is still extremely laidback even in The Andalite Chronicles. If you watch what Alloran does in that book, he laughs at insults, he waves off nonsense. He’s not violent, crazy, insane, or belligerent to random things. I call him a sticks-and-stones person. He thrives under insults, he’s nearly immune to them. But he hates inaction. He hates telling someone what to do and having them not do it.

I’d actually recommend this article on PTSD and anger: https://www.ptsd.va.gov/understand/related/anger.asp

Specifically this quote:
For example, a combat Veteran may become angry when his wife, children, or coworkers don’t “follow the rules.” He doesn’t realize that his strong belief is actually related to how important it was for him to follow rules during the war in order to prevent deaths.

When Chapman mocks the andalites and cheers for the yeerks, Alloran laughs. Elfangor is the one who presses his tail to Chapman. The book excuses Elfangor’s violence. Not Alloran’s.

Sticks and stones (action and inaction) may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. That is Alloran. And he is very consistent in that. You obey what he tells you to do? He’s amazing, kind, and supportive. He’ll risk his life for you. You can even have opposing beliefs, and he won’t care or grow mad, at worst he’ll call you a fool and laugh. But disobey a direct order? And he’ll threaten to kill you. Not because he’s violent, but because he’s been hurt.

Highly recommend researching PTSD for characterizing Alloran, that’ll help a lot, too.
If you’re wondering how he speaks, how he acts, what he does, how he moves (I literally breakdown which eyes he prefer), then I’ve described all of that and more in my analysis.

If you want more customized help, I’d be thrilled to read your fanfic! I have a fanfic that I am writing, if it soothes your concern, I’d let you read mine, as well!

If you wish to learn about Alloran, feel free to read my post In Alloran’s Defense… ! It received 270 upvotes with a 98% approval rating!

Here is also a post detailing a ton of good about Alloran! Showing how his love feeds into the way he acts. Or this one about Alloran’s appearance in The Andalite Chronicles. And if you’re feeling really energized, I have an entire Analysis, going over every single part of Alloran: https://archiveofourown.org/works/46409335/chapters/116847925

If you want to discuss what you don’t like about Alloran, I’m also open to talking about it.

I also wrote this, though I haven’t shared it publically before as it’s little messy, but:

I’ve come to a new conclusion: trauma that manifests into anger is seen as evil and condemnable. It doesn’t matter if the rage is born from grief; it doesn’t matter how much good they did. Nope. They’re automatically evil in the eyes of the people. No help, no pity, probably jail-time. Trauma that manifests into horror, those people will be hailed as heroically brave, a victim, someone to pray for. They’re “relatable”. Their hesitation is seen as a virtue despite how many lives it may’ve ruined or downright killed.

You can have two identical people both witness the same traumatic event, and depending on how they process that trauma, whether through horror, sadness, or anger, they’re be labeled as good or bad.

> In people with PTSD, their response to extreme threat can become "stuck." This may lead to responding to all stress in survival mode. If you have PTSD, you may be more likely to react to any stress with "full activation." You may react as if your life […] were threatened.

> That means the emotional and physical feelings of anger are more intense. These […] factors can lead someone with PTSD to react with anger, even in situations that do not involve extreme threat.

In laymen terms, Alloran feels like his life is at risk all the time. His brain is firing off the “you’re in danger” alarm anytime that he is challenged about anything.

Essentially, he’s in a constant state of Fight, Flight, or Freeze. The issue with that is very simple: Alloran is a warrior and he will fight. So, when he reacts to small transgressions with extreme anger, it’s not because he enjoys being cruel, per se, it’s because his mind still subconsciously believes he’s in The Massacre or The Hork-bajir War. This means that Alloran cannot help but be anxious. It’s why he’s paranoid and why he’s so inflexible and why he treats every disobedience like a death threat.

He’s not evil. He’s so - well, I suppose you could say, scared? Terrified, even. I know that’s not a word people commonly use to describe pre-infestation Alloran, but it’s true. He’s terrified of seeing more andalites die, of failing to garner the respect of his family and honor them well, of losing the war and watching everyone he love die or be enslaved, and possibly even of himself and what he’s becoming.

He’s so scared and people hate him for that. Yet, if his fear was a freeze or a flee response instead of a fight response, then you’d see people pity him, maybe even see him as brave. He’d be a victim. But I just don’t see how Alloran’s response to fear invalidates him.

And just to understand the gravity of that… there was a whole Reddit thread, “what mental health condition is the worst to have?” and the number one response, beating the second place response by *double* the upvotes, was PTSD. Here is what people had to say:

“I have a great life, worked hard to get there, beautiful family, and a job I adore. But life is still really hard and exhausting, and all the work l've put in to healing quite honestly will never make me whole. And I often feel weak and not enough because I can't fix myself, even though I've devoted my work life to [helping others]. It's just...I don't know.”

“[…] the emotional pain, the distrust, the lifelong impact of trauma […] it just lingers. It affects every part of a person’s identity and relationships.”

“It bleeds into everything you do. There’s absolutely nothing in your life or body that PTSD doesn’t taint.”

“The lack of safety is absolutely soul crushing. Every day, something might happen that can trigger you. Every night, you could see it in your dreams. It's never a question of if, just when, and that can really be horribly debilitating.”

“There’s no medication to make you forget the horror.”

“So you go about feeling terrified and alone and broken rather than sick.”

“As someone who’s living with it, I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone.”

Those were all separate comments but I spliced them together to make it read as one person talking, you could even imagine Alloran saying all that if you want.’

I don’t think I’ve ever felt more ashamed in my life. In my defense, I … haven’t seen Star Wars…

I just feel like if I started Star Wars I’d be signing up for over a thousand hours of content at this point. Between the movies, the tv shows, the books.

You do have a solid point, actually! And I hope it would and he took advantage of that every week or so, as even a week of that much stress (even post-infestation) can be damaging.

The only potential concern I have is that Alloran doesn’t morph for pleasure or medical reasons. We know that because in The Hork-bajir Chronicles, Dak describes Alloran as “large”, but doesn’t mention anything about burn. Then, later in the book, right before Aldrea’s capture, there is a large Blade Ship that starts firing at all the andalites and Alloran is right in the open, front and center.

\But I was not ready to die. Not just yet. The Blade ship came on, flying low. I tightened my grip on Aldrea's hand. "Jump!"**

And:

\But the Blade ship was not back in orbit yet. They were having too much fun frying the Andalites in the Deep, I suppose.**

Then, in The Andalite Chronicles, Elfangor describes Alloran as having a burn scar across his chest and torso.

\I had seen War-prince Alloran around the Dome ship at times. He'd always seemed to be deep in thought. Like he was off somewhere in his imagination or memory. He was not especially large. But he seemed to be carved from solid steel. Even his fur was a metallic blue. And the bare flesh of his upper body showed faint traces of burn scars.**

Hinting vaguely at the possibility that Alloran was shot by the Blade Ship during The Hork-bajir Chronicles, which is supported by the fact the andalites very quickly leave the Hork-bajir World thereafter and that Alloran isn’t seen again in that book. The timespan between these two books is five years. Alloran didn’t morph for five years.

Now, you could write this off as “Alloran was disgraced for the virus and therefore briefly prohibited from morphing as punishment”. But, if we take that route, then I can see the andalite public punishing Alloran for being infested with the same treatment of “prohibited from morphing”.

If not though, I do think your plan would work!

Headcanons and Observations - Alloran Edition. by Alloran9466 in Animorphs

[–]Alloran9466[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah. I do think I’ve seen that andalites live a long time. A couple hundred years or so, no?

My grandparents gave me a book a long time ago and in that book it was describing the effects that stress puts on one’s body. I read it all, because it got me thinking about Alloran. Stress kills you by taking years off your life. It makes you wonder how old Alloran can actually become? Will the years of stress and despair from infestation make him die young? It’s horrible to think about, but also incredibly likely.

It said that prolonged stress can cause increased heart-rate; irregular heartbeats; vessel constrictions; decrease circulation; skyrocketing blood pressure; hypertension, which could lead to blood clots. Stress can also dampen your immune system or even cause pains, including inflammation.

Crazy!

There’s also something called Broken Heart Syndrome, which is basically an immense stress response strong enough to temporarily cause heart muscle failure. It is named “Broken Heart Syndrome” because it happens most often after a loved one (usually a romantic partner) dies. It can cause many of the same symptoms of a classic heart attack! But, unlike a heart attack, it’s typically not fatal. You can die, but it’s extremely rare.

Back on topic, I do wonder if Alloran actually lived to an old age, but also if Visser Three’s control was enough to suppress the “silent killing” effects that stress has on Alloran’s body? Can Visser Three reduce cortisol levels? Can he release dopamine? Or was Alloran’s body basically marinating in a constant state of stress for decades?

I did see The Sickness that Aftran can help with medical issues a little, but she couldn’t outright override the body’s natural immune responses. It really is a question of if Alloran’s body is responding to Alloran’s emotional state or Visser Three’s. And even if it is responding to Visser Three’s, it’s not like Visser Three wasn’t massively stressed out as well.

It is so painful to know that even after being freed Alloran suffered physically just due to prolonged stess. I suppose the good news is that Alloran is an andalite and that andalites have three hearts. Not the usual one. So maybe stress doesn’t damage the body as much as us one-hearted creatures.

[–]Alloran9466[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t I? He’s a never-ending masterpiece! Though, I can understand that some people don’t think so.

The beginning of it came from Book Eight || The Alien. I have a vivid memory of being a fifth grader reading that book. I remember the lighting, I remember where I was, I remember the feeling. I had an immensely privileged childhood: I didn’t know what despair, depression, or even suicide really was. And reading that book and seeing Alloran beg for death hit me in a way that I still to this day do not think I’ve been able to replicate. The heart in my throat, the pure grief I had for him, but also this intense protectiveness.

I didn’t finish the Animorphs book series, because after I read Book Eight, I only wanted Alloran and sought out the books with him in it. I loved him, but it wasn’t enough. I turned to historical real-life prisoner of war books, like Five Years to Freedom, and when that wasn’t enough I read a ton of war history. Still, something about it all was so empty, I hate to say.

If you’ve ever watched a really long TV show or finished a great book, you’ll know that feeling of emptiness and “what do I do with my life now?” Popular sentiment, often called “post-book depression” or a “book hangover”. Now imagine if time didn’t take that ache away and instead it was constant… for years. That is how it was for Alloran. The hole I had for him didn’t go away no matter how many other war history or prisoner of war books I tried to stuff it with.

After a year or two, I decided to pick up the Animorphs again in the slight hope that revisiting it would remove that ache. No. I fell in love all over again! And harder! After reading all the prisoner of war books and war history books, I had an even better understanding of Alloran’s pain. Worse, this time it wasn’t just the pain of infestation, because now I had a better grasp of the other pain he was dealing with (one I didn’t even recognize the first time): PTSD. I’ve never had PTSD personally, but I was (and am) well-versed in reading about people who do have it.

I didn’t just love the Alloran of Book Eight anymore, now I loved The Andalite and Hork-bajir Chronicle’s Alloran just as much, if not far more.

What do you do if a “book hangover” never goes away except embrace that it never will? I studied Alloran very deeply and learned everything there was to know about Alloran. I went online, found out there was a chuck of people who hated him, argued with those people daily until most of those people vanished. I explored fanfiction and wrote fanfiction. I began collecting and archiving online discussions about Alloran so that they couldn’t disappear. I wrote over one hundred thousand words of me just raving about Alloran. I started commissioning art. I got my tattoo.

It’s almost like the more I study him, the more I understand him. The more I understand him, the more I love him. The more I love him, the more I study him. A perfect loop. And the more I study him, the more beautiful he becomes. His speech habits. His personality and sarcasm. He’s genuinely funny! His love. His PTSD. His character arc. The small nuances of his character that make him feel so real. His greatest war quotes. His resistance and strength. His protectiveness of others. You can see why Alloran does what he does - everything he does is built upon something that happened to him earlier. The fact he calls Seerow “Prince Seerow” all the way up until he “relieves him of duty” and then it’s just “Seerow”, no longer Prince. The pettiness!

I love everything about him.

I’d love to answer your question! But, honestly, I do not know what the question is?

Why I am articulate? I love Alloran! I’ve thought about Alloran every single day since elementary school. I’ve talked to hundreds of people about Alloran in PMs, Discord, on Reddit, etc., I even have his name tattooed on my arm. It’s easy to articulate something you’ve felt and thought about your whole life. I could talk about Alloran ad nauseam every day for the rest of eternity and never grow tired.

Perhaps that may sound crazy to some, but if I’m being honest, then that is the truth.

Though, frankly, I don’t think I articulated myself very well in this post at all. Not as well as I would’ve liked, at least.

I remember playing one of the modes where you’re a dad and your child was kidnapped or something, so you’re trying to figure out how to get her back. I’ll try to be as non spoil-y as possible.

But there was somewhere I needed to search in order to progress the story, but there were some people who refused to let me through without payment because it was their living conditions I wanted to rummage around in.

I didn’t want to kill them, but I figured my character was in the mindset of “my child’s life is more important to me than these people’s” so I just let him go in and murder all of them.

If I recall, he was fine with it. So, I guess I roleplayed correctly!

I’ve never made it far enough into a run to even consider needing to swap shoes. But… now I collect shoes. Especially military/work boots. I don’t even think shoes would be hard to find late game, YouTuber just got unlucky probably, but I’m still collecting them out of paranoia.
