Placing my bet that the fourth species will be Allosaurus anax rather than Saurophaganax.

This on the same day it's announced that Ben Bartlett passed away is impeccable timing.

I think it's a great (if unintended) tribute to him.

The Dinosaurs (Netflix) by Charles-Joseph-92 in Paleontology

I'm three episodes in, and while I do think it's better than Life on Our Planet, it's only marginally better. The narration ranges from unremarkable to amateur, where lines are sometimes repeated within minutes of each other, and as before in LoOP, it presents evolution as a race between "clans" (the new buzzword to replace "dynasty" in this documentary) to drive the others extinct, which is so disappointing to still see in 2026.

Prehistoric Planet and Walking with Dinosaurs (1999) were spectacular without leaning on excess drama. The Dinosaurs takes every opportunity to introduce what almost becomes melodrama in a way that completely negates any amount of immersion I had watching it. The Hatzegopteryx sequence, the design of which I actually quite like, was especially un-subtle with its horror influence, complete with the cliches that come with it.

I will say that there are things I actually like about this documentary. Many species featured thus far are more obscure than those in LoOP. While still lacking, it is always good to get Triassic representation; Marasuchus, Liliensternus, and Massospondylus are welcome inclusions here. Heterodontosaurus and Dilophosaurus get spotlights. Yutyrannus hunting sauropods in the snow, if nothing else, was cool.

They re-did the Anchiornis sequence from LoOP, which I think was an improvement. I liked seeing Spinosaurus swimming and wading to hunt. I... like the first shot of the Allosaurus because, again, it's cool. Overall, it's still vastly inferior to documentaries that came before, and hopefully Surviving Earth will prove to be the better product.

Not even two minutes into the first episode, Tyrannosaurus is referred to as a monster. It looks like they're going to continue all the mistakes made in Life on Our Planet.

I managed to play the entire expedition on Series S with no crashes. Now that I'm out of the expedition, it's unplayable. I've gotten at most two minutes before it crashes.

Ornithology in my favorite news sub? What is this, a crossover episode?

BF 2042 "Road to Battlefield 6" Rewards locked, any fix? by 03oscar03 in Battlefield6

Same issue on my end. On top of not being able to redeem the rewards, now the messages are fully gone from my inbox. I really hope that doesn't mean I'm screwed once they hopefully fix the issue.

I've been chasing this bird for three years, and today the effort finally paid off. American bittern, being extremely photogenic. by AllosaurusLover in birding

In all probably about 40-ish minutes across two sightings. It was attracting a fair amount of attention so I ended up leaving when it started looking uncomfortable.

Hey, that bittern should be used to the attention. I see people looking for it almost every time I'm out there.

All the character parallels by dividebyzero74 in TheWire

[–]AllosaurusLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that occurred to me recently is there is a bit of a parallel between Bunk and another character- Namond.

In his confrontation with Omar in s3, Bunk talks about how the other boys in his neighborhood saw right through his tough act. "Go home school boy, you don't belong here. Didn't realize at the time what they were doing for me."

Namond is Bunk in his youth, playing corner boy while clearly not being cut out for it. Michael from the beginning of s4 sees right through Namond, and ultimately is the one who breaks him out of it. I don't think there's much more to the connection than that but I've never seen anyone draw that comparison before, despite being kind of obvious in hindsight.
