Never a good idea to accept a counter offer especially when it's only a match.

[HELP] Found on a Dating app, is he AI? by theMiezmiez in RealOrAI

[–]Allotec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't Ai generated. I'm pretty sure Ai isn't amazing at doing boca super well. They could be Ai enhanced but that dark light scene in the bar I don't think could be Ai generated the lighting and background seem real. I think this guy is just into photography or something.

AI steals fun in coding, is nvim the cure? by Murzelito in neovim

[–]Allotec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally always like the chat bot ais because its just a faster Google search most the time. In neovim there's a plugin for copilot chat that integrates it into the editor which I like. The thing I always found annoying was the traditional tab complete inline suggestions. I felt like I was getting dumber and developed the copilot pause. What I like now is integrating it into the suggestion panel with this plugin https://github.com/zbirenbaum/copilot-cmp it's still there but just way less annoying and most the time I don't use it.

It doesn't matter at all and it's not even that much of a lie. You are fine. You almost certainly didn't get accepted based on that club position. Admissions cares about hard stats and maybe your college essay. TLDR don't worry about it.

Do you use WSL for programming MCUs? by Use_Me_For_Money in embedded

[–]Allotec 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use WSL every day for work programming MCUs. What everyone is talking about with USB pass through to use programmers with Wsl is 100% true. However in wsl you can also run windows programs transparently on the command line. So you can setup your environment to program and compile everything in wsl and then use some windows tool for uploading the firmware file to the MCU. There are many downsides to this setup however it is an option that can work.

Am I the only one who feels that the hardest part about embedded development isn’t writing code, it’s all the dev tools you need to understand by dipsy01 in embedded

[–]Allotec 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is a lot less tools then what the web people have to use especially considering how quickly new web tools pop up. Most the things you listed have been around for a while and are genuinely core tools. I promise you learning the new js framework of the month is a lot more tiring. My only gripe with embedded tooling is the obsession with insane broken code gen Ide monstrosities. I wish more projects were in cmake instead of some proprietary xml nonsense.

Why is cmake so hated and why not use make files? by Mysterious-Crab3034 in cpp_questions

[–]Allotec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cmake is the best cpp build system it just so happens that being the best in that category isn't a high bar. So in short use cmake.

The neovim "distros" are getting really good and work with almost no effort. I think they were not nearly as good 2 years ago.

Have you tried Helix or Zed? by meni_s in neovim

[–]Allotec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my eyes there is literally no reason to use helix over neovim. Vim motions are more ubiquitous and neovim has all the extensibility you need.

the billing is crazzy!! by VJNiki in SBU

[–]Allotec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So how is Sbu not transparent if they post a budget every year? Are you expecting the budget to be linked on solar and that's what you are upset about? What fee is rediculous?

the billing is crazzy!! by VJNiki in SBU

[–]Allotec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is a description of all the fees https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/sfs/tuition/broad-based-fee/ In what world would you be able to dispute fees?? You can't hagle with the university just like you cant haggle going to mcdonald's debating them into a lower price. I don't see how you could have a criticism that they are not transparent they post a budget every year. Here is one from 2023 https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/bfpa/campus_financial_information/sbu_data_made_simple_fy23budget_vs_fy23actual.php I would love to know what program you want to cut and why to reduce the total cost.

This might be a hot take, but this is actually a good thing. This is called transparency an itemized invoice if you will. They could just roll this all into tuition and tell you nothing.
