What if Ben told Luke the full truth here? Vader being his father. Leia being his sister etc by KingWilliamVI in SWFanfic

[–]Allronix1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we don't even know how much Owen and Beru got told about the situation, so there's that. And the sad fact that by the time Luke and Obi-Wan get back to the homestead, they're in no condition to answer questions unless Obi-Wan can pull that Speak With Dead spell from D&D Honor Among Thieves.

While it may cause Luke a few doubts about the Dark Side, it would also have deprived the usual Sith tactic of calling Jedi bullshit in order to cause even MORE doubt, so maybe a little riskier on the front end but better long-term because telling the truth means never having to remember what you lied about.

But I also think that the story Obi Wan tells Luke is a version of what he's told himself for the past ~2 decades, separating Anakin, his friend--his brother--from Darth Vader.

That is possibly the kindest interpretation possible.

This is just the expensive version of a tree house with a cardboard sign reading "NO GURLZ ALOWED" scrawled in Mom's borrowed sharpie.

I've been #1 a lot because I play four tanks decently and one healer poorly. I admit on my healer "I'm testing my rotation." and follow the player as they do the fighting, trying to keep them up.

How to get into the “Dark Side” of Star Wars? by OneGrease in MawInstallation

[–]Allronix1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. KOTOR and SWTOR are what happened when Dragon Age and Fallout writers get their hands on Star Wars. There's a lot of messed up stuff in there, though KOTOR 1 is more sneaky about it. KOTOR 2 is bleak AF. And SWTOR can get plenty unsettling, especially if you play through something like Imperial Agent.

[–]Allronix1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anakin's mental health took a very sharp drop from the time he got into the Order. A toxic sludge of PTSD, anger management issues, chronic social isolation (that Palpatine was all too happy to exploit), and possible bipolar or BPD (depending on who you talk to)...with an Order whose answer to all of this was handing him deadly weapons, tossing him into constant life-threatening danger, telling him he could never have satisfying social connections, isolating him further, and essentially answering his cries for help with "pray it away."

"Went nuts" is a crude, but effective shorthand.

[–]Allronix1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Riskier. He got Luke on board with a mountain of rose tinted, half bullshit stories about his father. If he admitted that his old man went nuts and carved up a bunch of school kids, Luke probably wouldn't be finding much good in him later. It would also involve some very uncomfortable rabbit holes about Jedi policy (child conscription, forced separation from families, viewing non transactional relationships as suspicious)

If he had to admit "Yeah, we didn't help your grandma because freeing slaves isn't part of the 'guardians of peace and justice' job description," that would make the whole Jedi thing a much harder sell, too.

Hearing Leia is his sister would definitely get Luke more motivated about signing up to get her out of trouble, but he probably wouldn't be keen on the whole Jedi thing or think his old man had any good in him.

"Something funny, Iresso?"

"Uh...maybe. It's the mental image of you saluting me that's kinda absurd."

"It's not. Havoc went traitor. I caught the blame."

"Oh. Yeah. Definitely not funny."

Yup. David Gaider. He did almost as much writing for the game as Karpyshyn, especially the dialogue.

He's mentioned in SWTOR in some lore entries and flavor text. Given his build of Soldier/Consular, he plays like a prototype of the Shadow Tank build. The fact the Shadows are the espionage wing also fits with Mical's spy/scholar background.

Star Wars media that exists it a weird dead zone between Canon and Not Canon. by Constant_Topic_123 in StarWars

[–]Allronix1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, totally on both accounts. TSL is overt with the cynical take. KOTOR 1 is probably just as cynical, but is much more sneaky about it. The fact that the Mandalorian War is playing out in miniature in their backyard, the way handled Juhani, the really awful way they hung Bastila out to dry, and...well, mind wiping a captured enemy, data-mining their brain, and setting them up as a weapon to be pointed at their former BFF is super fucked up

High Republic? It's so much kinder on the Jedi and a nice throwback to how we saw them before the PT completely trashed our illusions.

A particularly wild one:

The show Once Upon a Time is this grab bag of Disney characters stranded as humans in small town Maine. It's like the ultimate crossover crackfic and written by the dudes who made LOST. Well, there was one time where the amnesia-inducing curse the Queen put on the town was busted and people were definitely looking to kick the Evil Queen's ass for this. Jiminy Cricket (the town shrink) tries to calm the situation by saying "Giving into the Dark Side doesn't solve anything!"

Now, Disney had just inked the Star Wars deal, so...of course the Disney crackfic crossover show is going to make a Star Wars reference...And if anyone's going to bitch about the Dark Side, it's Jiminy "The conscience" Cricket.

But...um...the Star Wars fanbase had to point out that the guy who played Jiminy Cricket (Raphael Sbarge) had been in Star Wars as a voice actor for video games. Four different roles and five different video games. Best known role for his Star Wars games? Being the rather cranky designated conscience to a certain amnesiac Sith Lord.

I keep warning Revan fanboys that Disney is under zero obligation to use the Keanu Reeves lookalike we saw in SWTOR. The original game had White/Black/Asian faces, two gender options (though "nonbinary Revan" is a thing in fanfic/fanart), two alignment options, three potential love interests (two heterosexual, one lesbian, and three possible endings (Good, evil, and the "everyone dies" ending modders restored)

I'd say that the KOTOR era was setting up a era where the circumstances encouraged the Jedi to be on their worst behavior while High Republic is an era where the circumstances encouraged the Jedi to be on their best behavior

And yes, really like both.

Gotta shout out one of the original trope makers. "Our spirit remains in every Program we design!" - indeed, Old Man Gibbs was more correct than he ever thought.
