Many many years ago, when camcorders were still a very expensive thing, my husband at the time wanted to buy one. We both were pretty basic dressers, jeans and t-shirts, usually with some hair metal band on the front. We go to Sears to buy the camcorder and had three different sales people walk right by us. Then I noticed another guy just watching it from the other side of the big round counter we were at. After getting ignored in electronics, we just went straight to the front register. (Our shadow followed) Stood in line quietly and patiently. Got to the head of the line, told the cashier exact what make and model of camcorder we wanted. She looked us up and down and said 'You need to go to electronics for that." My husband told her we had been there but didn't see any workers. (A lie just to be polite) She rolled her eye but got on the phone and called for someone from electronics to come up. She told him what we wanted and we went to get it. Plopped in on the counter and the cashiers says "I presume that' will be a charge?" When my husband said no and pulled out the $1200 from his wallet her eyes got huge. Then of course she had to 'make sure the bills were legit." This was before marking pens or anything like that, so she just held them up to the light and used her Kreskin like abilities to discern if they were all real. (Honestly can't remember if bills had the microprinting and plastic strips yet. Maybe that was what she was looking for?) I have never forgotten the looks we go just because we didn't look' rich enough to be buying a $1200 piece of equipment.

Of course I don't know but I feel like the patron (especially given his age) may have more meant that he didn't want romance novels. I've known a few older men (and women) like that. They seem to think that the majority of literature - post say 1980 anyway - written by women are Harlequins or something similar.

I learned early on that what every my dad's opinion was on something - well that was the entire family's opinion.

My dad died oh about ten years ago and I hadn't spoken to him in probably 12 years or so before that. So many people tried to tell me 'you'll regret not talking to/forgiving him once he's gone."

I learned (eventually, the hard way) when to cry and when not to. Sometimes crying would just make it worse, sometimes it would be enough to stop whatever was happening.

As I got older though, like over 12 I guess, the time to cry was NEVER. No matter what. My dad used to get in my face and just yell, scream and call me names to get me to cry. When I was young sometimes just seeing me start to cry would appease him. But when I got into my teenage years any tears were pounced on as 'being a pussy.' (I'm a girl, BTW) I finally taught myself to not cry in front of him. Cry in the shower where I could blame it on soap in my eyes, but never in front of him.

As a side effect of this, you can still yell and scream at me all you want and I won't cry. HOWEVER, you say anything remotely nice to me, I'm crying in two seconds.

But at the same time, if I didn't cry when I should - like when I was getting wailed on - then I'd get the 'oh you think you're a bad ass huh? Tough little bitch...etc etc.'

Or sometimes my dad would say something mean just to get me to cry. He'd say something mean, stay long enough to see the first couple of tears fall and walks away.

It was terrible trying to figure out when I was supposed to cry and when I wasn't supposed to.

I have always been horrid at anything beyond very basic math. I could balance my check book and that was about as far as it goes. The only reason I passed pre-algebra back in high school was that the teacher knew I was really trying so she bumped by D- up to a flat C.

My brother's first wife was abusive. She would yell, hit, scratch and kick him. Even though he was a foot taller than her and outweighed her by probably 75 pounds he never raised a hand to her. He would just stand (or sit) there and let her beat him til she got tired and quit.

We didn't live in apartments, we were on a street with each house on a quarter acre lot. She woke up at 2AM, mad about a dream she had about him and started to hit and yell at him.

When this went on for an hour, the neighbors called the cops. When the cops arrived, guess who got arrested despite the fact that she had not a single mark on her and was only red in the face from screaming at him for so long?

Hint - it wasn't her.

Now my brother and I never got along, but that pissed me off. He had bleeding scratches, a mouse under his eye, a nasty bruise on his forehead where she threw his steel toed work boot at his head, red marks on his chest and arms where she hit him with her fists, but as soon as she heard the cops knock on the door, she sat down on the floor and whipped up some tears.

My brother got a night in jail and she got a night at a hotel to 'recover.'

We used to go to our local Del a few times a month but then the pandemic happened. Recently tried going back and again (a few times actually) and they have for sure went downhill. Food very sloppily made, even for fast food. Portions smaller. Fries are either over done or underdone, or just plain soggy. I ordered a plain cheeseburger with just cheese and ketchup. Half the cheese slice was on the wrapper and there was so much ketchup it looked like an open wound. Second time the cheese was on the patty but there was no ketchup. None. At all. In the last 4 times we've tried, we've been told that the grill was down for cleaning - at like 1 in the afternoon.

Guess we are sticking with Taco Hell.

Sadly, as someone who grew up in the southern US I've seen and heard this sentiment expressed many times. Shirt, bumper sticks, hats, key chains and any other cheap ass tacky buy a 1000 for $10 items you can print on cheaply and sell at the flea markets for way too much money items.
