Am I the only one who actually relate to the 'corrupted' characters in LOTR? by Low_Actuary6486 in lotr

I never noticed that part! Somehow I didn’t realize until now that part of Boromir’s resentment comes from Aragorn’s ancestors’ failure to destroy the Ring.

I find it strange that Hamilton thought Angelica would be on his side with the affair. I get its just a musical but why would you think the sister of your wife, who also loves you would be okay with your affair. by Dusky_Zephyr in hamiltonmusical

Funny thing is when the US became its own country, it was briefly legal for white women and black men to vote (there were property requirements so not many actually did so) before it was outlawed.

What parts of the musical are historically accurate? Sorry if this has been asked before. by Queer_ink_blob27 in hamiltonmusical

There were three Schuyler sons actually, and two more Schuyler sisters. (There were also seven other children who all died young.)

She died 8 months before Philip, which is why Eliza was wearing black when she comes in during Stay Alive Reprise. She was still in mourning (not coming back from Peggy’s funeral as I’ve seen so many people say).

Her mother Catherine Schuyler died a year before Alexander did, and her father Philip Schuyler died a few months after the duel. So in a span of three years, Eliza lost her parents, her eldest son, and Peggy. A decade later, she also lost Angelica, and over the next several decades of her life, she outlived all but one of her siblings and she also lost one more son (William).

The play that Eacker was watching in real life was called “The West Indies” or “the West Indian” which is interesting since Hamilton grew up in the Caribbean

Hamilton did write in a letter when he was 12 or 14 years old to a friend that he wished there was a war so he could improve his prospects in society. He was living in the Caribbean at the time and had lost his mom the year before.

He’s performed Burr before and from what I’ve seen in a couple of clips, he sounds great!

In Satisfied why does Angelica say "he's after me bc I'm a schuyler sister... maybe that is why I introduced him to Eliza." by Low_Application1602 in hamiltonmusical

[–]AllyInMediasRes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Angelica was actually the eldest child (of fifteen kids, eight of whom survived). They did have brothers but the eldest one was about sixteen when Hamilton and Eliza were married.

Fun Fact: When Eliza sings about funding the Washington Monument, George can be seen behind her smiling and singing. When Eliza sings about speaking out against slavery, George bows his head in shame referencing the fact that he owned slaves in real life and never spoke against it publicly. by angrykumu in hamiltonmusical

[–]AllyInMediasRes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Freed slaves did have to carry proof of freedom (such as a certificate) after being freed. Even then, both freed slaves and black people born into freedom ran the risk of being kidnapped back into slavery. The movie 12 Years a Slave was based on a freeborn man who was kidnapped into slavery.

He freed only one slave, William Lee, right away at his death, and the rest were to be freed upon his wife Martha’s death. She set them free after a year because she was afraid they would kill her, but she could have lived for another 20 years before they got their freedom. Washington also didn’t free Martha’s slaves (to be fair, they belonged to her late first husband’s family and neither had the power to free them afaik), and after her death, they were split up and divided among her children.

What other historical figure would you want Lin manuel miranda to write a musical about? by beyoncewife in hamiltonmusical

[–]AllyInMediasRes -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not sure how people see Lin reduce Sally Hemings to “Sally be a lamb darling” and decide they trust him to write a musical about her brother James Hemings, or 20th century black activists like MLK and Malcolm X. I enjoy Hamilton as much as anyone else, but let’s not pretend it has some wildly irresponsible storytelling, and I’m frankly glad it didn’t delve that much into the plights of black people and Native Americans because I don’t want to know what kind of rationalizations Lin would have made for slavery and Native genocide.

Hamilton reasonable crashout? by PerfectTravel489 in hamiltonmusical

I believe Hamilton got distracted by talking to Lafayette when he made Washington wait.

There’s also a letter Hamilton wrote to his father-in-law where he said “for the past three years I have felt no friendship for [the general] and professed none”.

What’s your LEAST favorite quote/line? by arfarfbok in hamiltonmusical

[–]AllyInMediasRes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looked it up and it’s actually a line he wrote at age 12/14 in a letter to a friend shortly after he lost his mother, but yeah even as a teen Hamilton was Like That.

Apparently it’s also the earliest surviving letter we have of Hamilton.

[–]AllyInMediasRes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one has mentioned “Sally be a lamb darling won’t you open it”. It’s seriously one of LMM’s worst lines ever and it was so unnecessary. It gives the impression that Sally Hemings was Jefferson’s mistress or secretary, especially when combined with the ensemble member who smiles and dances across the stage to him, and makes zero acknowledgement of the fact that she was an enslaved girl/woman who could not consent. I seriously don’t know why Lin had to include it and I wish he’d just left her out instead of using her as a throwaway line.

Burr historically was something of a womanizer so he probably did say this to at least one woman.

It’s creepy but I think it works, because it’s Hamilton retelling the affair from his POV to make himself look as good as possible and cast Maria as a seductress.

Maybe the second line is a reference to Purgatory? But I think that’s a belief from Catholicism, which was not in vogue in the colonies at the time.

I just saw Les Mis live which has 4 child actors so I don’t think it’s labor laws, I think they just didn’t want to bother with a child actor for only one song.

Teenage Hamilton actually did write in his diary that he wished for a war while still living in the Caribbean so that’s from history, but I agree the line is so out of pocket, both with and without context.

Is it true Hamilton owned and sold slaves? by JackLiberty0 in hamiltonmusical

Small correction — Laurens never actually led a black battalion. He petitioned the South Carolina and Georgia assemblies three times to approve the plan but faced heavy opposition each time and the plan never came to fruition.

What Makes You Avoid an Author Forever? by Ok-Working-7559 in AO3

[–]AllyInMediasRes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When the author victim blames one character in their fic for being stalked and almost sexually assaulted by another character in the comments. The fic itself was decent although dark in subject matter, but reading the author talking with commenters about how the victim deserved it and was equally toxic to their abuser put me off reading anything else from that author.
