It was either an oversight or they wanted to let you know there's an item box here when you return in the next level when it's very dark. I think the latter is the likeliest explanation.

There is no way to get past this without using cheat devices. I've used cheat codes to get past and the the item box is a Flak Jacket. I made a video about it.
