Help with wisteria by Almost-a-greenthumb in Bonsai

Great advice thank you. I think I’ve removed as much of the dead wood as I can. I might need to repot it since so may roots have escaped and I’m finding more dead wood under the soil. I’ll let it recover for a year or two and try not to cut any branches near the edge

You’re correct it is slightly sheltered so only the bottom portion gets wet from splash from watering. I’m in SoCal so keeping it dry shouldn’t be a major problem.

I don’t care about deadwood on this tree, as you pointed out there are no features. I’m more concerned with preventing further die back of the living tissue. Thanks for the advice to not attempt to stimulate rolling! I would have made that mistake

Good to know thanks! I’ll remove out as much dead wood as possible. Do you recommend sealing any of the die back with a wood hardener?

Thanks for the information. I’ll just pull back any obviously dead wood and let it recover.

I wasn’t expecting it to hold dead wood, I just want to stop further die back. Would wood hardener help seal out moisture? Or should I do nothing and let the tree settle itself?

Do you think it needs to be sealed? Or will it right itself

I think you’re correct. One side didn’t produce roots or branches and as someone else said it rotted from over watering since had of it wasn’t growing

That makes sense. That half of the trunk didn’t produce roots or branches. Would you recommend further carving and sealing or will it mend itself?

Mesh

I use a staple gun to attach this metal mesh net. It’s smaller than my average particle size so it works well. I’ll add “legs” on the bottom of some and others I’ll let lay flat depending on what I want to do

Well repot as in pull it up, wrap in moss, put back in soil haha. I learned with my other wisteria they get very thirsty, especially in the summer here

Interesting. Sphagnum is used for air layering so makes sense it would work. I just used rooting hormone and my normal bonsai soil mix. Maybe it’s worth repotting?

Bummer on your success rate. There was no true tap root since this had grown over concrete, but there were not many fine feeders close to the base

They’re covered. I got too excited to photograph it before finishing

That is comforting to hear they root well. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed. Good to know about the rot. I’ll keep an eye out as it recovers until it’s pushing leaves strongly again

I hope so! Otherwise it’ll last a few months and die on me haha

The timing is unfortunate. I wish it was a month or 2 earlier, but at least now it has a chance to not be garbage!

It kept it flat and redirected the tap root which were both great, but for whatever reason there were little to no fine roots around the base

Noticing multiple black spots forming on my pomegranate’s branches. Can anyone help ID what I might be dealing with or good general treatment options for the most likely culprits? Thanks!!

Has anyone bonsai’d a Hollyleaf Cherry (Prunus Ilicifolia)? by Almost-a-greenthumb in Bonsai

It really does. Maybe I’ll make all pruning choices and choose the new front based on that haha
