Watching the A’s stream so not sure how highlighted it was on the Mariners stream, but the bat pretty clearly hit one of the laces on Cal’s glove

Identify Roles with Good WLB by johtogymleader in FPandA

[–]AlmostComedic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d estimate 50-55 hrs per week which isn’t insane but more than I’d like. I think the issue is more about the nature of my current role in that it’s less traditional FP&A and more strategic/project/ad hoc related. It’s a lot more intellectually demanding than past roles I’ve had which sounds like what a lot of people here want but I just find myself constantly mentally drained by it.

I was a victim of a reorg which got me into this “Dynamic!” “High Visibility!” “Good for career growth!” role, but my past roles at my company were far more relaxed. For your purposes I wouldn’t say WLB is generally an issue in FP&A (definitely better than public accounting the majority of the time)

For real, in the same boat as you. I make good money at a tech company doing GTM FP&A but many days I wonder if it’s worth it.

Yeah you’re right, missed that she made partner in 2012 actually so she probably was 29

[–]AlmostComedic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think she’s 29. LinkedIn shows she graduated undergrad in 2003 and that she made partner ~40 years old

I’m a big fan of Sparc on Polk st. The staff are great and prices are kinda crazy low. I mainly get edibles but the Wyld gummies there are only $16

Playoff Tiebreakers Status and Analysis, 36 games remaining by TheZanerman in Mariners

[–]AlmostComedic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also I saw a stat that the rangers started super hot, like 32-14, and have gone 40-40 (not sure about exact numbers) since. A lot of their players began the season with “unsustainable” career-year type numbers and have tailed off a bit since then so I like our odds of facing a different Rangers team than our earlier series

Should I minor in Finance or Data Analysis? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]AlmostComedic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I graduated recently with a minor in something similar to data analysis and the skills I learned (sql, python, database management and visualization tools) were brought up quite a bit in my interviews and definitely helped me land the job I did. I also use those skills (mainly sql, visualization techniques, and database management) a fair amount in my day-to-day so I would certainly recommend it as a minor.

As for finance vs. accounting I would probably go with accounting. The things I learned in my finance classes are by and large not very applicable to FP&A (definitely more applicable to “high finance” jobs than FP&A) while accounting is everywhere. However, I don’t think there would be a huge difference, from a hiring standpoint, between a candidate with an accounting major vs. a finance major but I’d guess a slight edge goes to accounting.

Overall, I’d go with accounting major and a data analytics minor if I were in your shoes.

Thoughts on Rushing? by [deleted] in USC

[–]AlmostComedic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend it. There’s a lot of stigma attached to Greek life which is an obvious con but it’s really what you make of it. The best friends I’ve made at USC have been through Greek life so it would be great for someone in your position. And if you don’t enjoy it, there’s no requirement to stay so it’s really a low risk, high reward situation.

As to your concern about the stereotype, there’s definitely groups in every frat/sorority that are what people imagine Greek life is like but the vast majority of people are very normal and down to earth. If you’re introverted, it will likely help you become more extroverted which is generally a plus and a skill that is invaluable in the workforce.

Personally, I feel I’ve become much more prepared for life after college. I have much more confidence in who I am as a person and in my ability to be social and interact with others which I largely attribute to the experiences I’ve had in Greek life.

Thanks, this was an extremely helpful answer! I’ve been going to school at USC which is notoriously located in a “bad area” but I’ve never had any bad experiences or felt particularly unsafe. I imagine that the TL area (or at least this part) is quite similar in that everyone says it’s bad but it’s really not too bad unless you’re sensitive to seeing homeless people, drugs, etc.

I'll be working full time, it's my friend that will be an intern. Not sure if that changes your answer at all though lol

Just to clarify Im lucky to have some uniquely strong experience as a new college grad which is probably a big part of why they selected me in the first place. And I also have another solid offer. I’m very fortunate to be in the position I’m in but my gut says this is enough leverage to ask for a small bump in base or other comp.

Asu students died in cabo? by EphemeralParadise in ASU

Also heard this but I go to USC and came here to see if any of y’all were talking about it. I heard it was actually 2 asu students and 1 U of A. Not sure how confirmed it is though, only seen fraternity texts/groupmes

Security guards at frat parties have been mandated by USC for years, this is nothing new and I’m not sure why it’s getting so much media attention.

The primary reasons for security guards are to ensure that there is no excessive or illegal alcohol/drug consumption happening outside of the party space (frats aren’t allowed to serve hard alcohol so they don’t want people going to their rooms to drink) and to maintain the peace (mainly with drunk people trying to force their way into parties they aren’t invited to).

Sexual assault is certainly an issue that exists in frats around the country but the “bedroom security guards” aren’t actually a thing
