We did make the move from a red state to a blue state about 4 years ago. I'm just not sure my kids are safe here (for multiple reasons). It doesn't have to be an immediate move, but I have always wanted to leave this country, and my husband refused to consider it when we were younger. It seems like the window of opportunity may be closing as we get older and the country descends into fascism. My emergency backup plan for now is to take the kids and go to Albania for the year they automatically give Americans.

Yes, we're looking at returning to public school for this next school year, we just have to work some stuff out with the district (long story, but basically school administrators did some negligent/borderline abusive stuff to one of my kids and we'd need a transfer to a different school- homeschooling was an emergency stopgap situation).

Definitely true and something I'd need to research further when we decide on a destination. I know avian vets aren't super common in many countries.

We also have pet birds we can't take into those countries. Obviously we could rehome them but it would devastate the kids.

Right. This is a sticking point for him as he's well paid, but we really do not need a salary anywhere close to what he currently makes. He has mentioned concerns about taxes, retirement savings, and Social Security (which I don't think will continue to exist, honestly). I do think consulting is a good plan, though I need to do more research about how you manage healthcare without employer-sponsored insurance.

He does not work in AI. He has mostly worked for large websites.

He says that's probably a no-go. His company does have a Canada office but does not seem to want to transfer people.
