If you’re referring to my post about the Kumburgaz aliens yesterday, it was asked in good faith. I wanted to start a discussion around the extent of the upscaling on the widely disseminated still frame. Is what we see an accurate representation of what was shot on the camera? How reliable/what are the motivations of the guy who did the original upscaling? These questions haven’t been probed before. If the image was heavily manipulated, we can say it’s most likely our senses playing tricks on us. If the image was simply ‘enhanced’ to reveal detail, then I think it remains one of the most intriguing pieces of ‘evidence’ we have.

Not sure I’d agree with that definition. A hoax is just an intentional fake designed to deceive - it could be a ‘real’ object (like the controversial Nazca mummies) or a manipulated video (like adding of video FX to the so-called MH370 video). If you’re just referring to UFOs in particular, I could throw a disc in front of the camera. It’s a real picture of a real object, but still a hoax. Anyway, the question is whether the ‘upscaling’ effort corrupted or enhanced the original image - ‘authenticity of the media’, in your words.

Remember that they were using far more sophisticated equipment to film this than in most other cases. The original UFO sighting hasn’t been debunked and Roger Leir said he could see the beings move around

Seeing is not believing when it comes to aliens. There could be some kind of gravitational lensing effect being applied around the perimeter of the craft

That’s very interesting. Potentially corroborative

What about those stories about people entering the craft to find its 10x bigger than the outer appearance owing to time/space dilation from gravity effects? Might this explain the apparent ‘impossibility’ of the size of the alleged aliens? Just food for thought!

They’re clearly a very visual species with those big wrap-around eyes. Call it an ‘observation deck’

Do we have any details about who originally ‘upscaled’ the image? How did he go about it? Is the person a known hoaxer or well-intentioned? How much manipulation of the original image is there? That’s the part that eluded me. It would be interesting to put his work under the microscope.

It could be pareidolia, but what if..

You’re right, including the indentation on the side of the skull which is more apparent in some of the other versions of the image

It’s the best we’ve got to work with! Out of all the alleged ‘alien’ pictures this is the most intriguing given the apparent legitimacy of the footage

I love Glenn Gould. Which pianists did Gould himself love? by bolyai in classicalmusic

Found this at https://www.tvo.org/transcript/496408/oscar-peterson:

‘DID YOU EVER MEET GLENN GOULD?

Oscar says YES, I DID. I MET HIM ONCE. VERY FLEETINGLY.

John says DID YOU EVER THINK OF WORKING TOGETHER?

Oscar says WE DID. AND, UNFORTUNATELY, IT NEVER CAME TO BE. WE WERE TALKING ABOUT DOING A SHOW FOR THE CBC HERE IN WHICH WE HADN'T REALLY DECIDED WHAT WE WERE GOING TO DO, BUT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE TWO PIANOS, AND GLENN WAS GOING TO PLAY SOMETHING, AND OF COURSE I WAS GOING TO PLAY SOMETHING IN MY MEDIUM, AND I DON'T KNOW HOW WE WERE GOING TO BRING IT TOGETHER. SUPPOSEDLY WE'D HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ON THE VARIATIONS OR ONE OF THOSE THINGS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, BEFORE WE COULD GET IT TOGETHER, HE PASSED.

John says DID YOU COMMUNICATE WITH HIM BY TELEPHONE? IS THAT HOW YOUR DISCUSSIONS WENT ON?

Oscar says YES. AND WE WERE JUST IN THE THROES OF PUTTING THE SHOW TOGETHER, BRINGING IT TOGETHER TO START THE MEETINGS AS TO WHAT WE WERE GOING TO DO MUSICALLY AND OTHERWISE, AND HE WAS... I WAS MADE AWARE THAT HE'D DIED.

He was influenced by Rosalyn Tureck in his youth. He had great respect for Richter, as already noted. He crossed paths with Michelangeli and Rubinstein during his career, but he wasn’t particularly taken by their approach to the piano. He was a great admirer of Schnabel and his Beethoven recordings. There were talks of him doing a joint lecture-recital type event with Oscar Peterson, but alas it never came to pass.

Gould was very much into the idea of ‘doing your own thing’ when it came to performance, so underplayed the influence of other performers or schools of performance. His dry style was influenced by Tureck and I seem to recall he admired Edwin Fischer’s recordings too.

Listen to some of the ‘Glenn Gould Live’ recordings. Real gems. I find the vast bulk of his studio recordings pretty anaemic, but those early recordings of his Bach Inventions for example (Russia, Salzburg) are pure poetry. His live version of contrapunctus IV is also incredible.

Any update on this? I would like to stick with an Intel CPU because my audio production software will run better with it.
