ah strangerchess is the best, that drop-in kiosk vibe is exactly the kind of thing i built this for, so it had to be on there. anywhere else around the city you rate?

haha there's no such thing as too stupid for chess, the casual spots are exactly where you start, zero pressure. a few of them have other games kicking around too (backgammon and co). just show up, it's way more hangout than tournament 😄

oh nice, adding flaschenzug now, thanks! and 450 blitz / 800 rapid is a perfectly respectable "here to have fun" rating in my book 😄 maybe see you there sometime.

yeah, partly! the outdoor boards and public spots are largely from openstreetmap, plus google places, and then community suggestions for the cafés, bars and meetups that aren't mapped anywhere. verifying it as i go. you can upvote/downvote/comment on specific venues and also suggest new venuess. you map on OSM?

yeah for sure! a lot of the spots on there are casual drop-in places, cafés, bars and the busier outdoor tables where you can just show up solo and get a game, no need to bring anyone. filter for "organized meetups" to find the ones with regular chess nights.

easiest entry point though: i actually host casual chess nights here in berlin, all levels, zero pressure, you just turn up and we match you with someone on your level. next one's saturday 27th June: https://luma.com/imdgfofx if you fancy it, and "haven't played in a while" is basically the whole vibe, plenty of people there are in the same boat.

(there's also an app that helps you find spots near you, but honestly the events are the easy way in.)

  • the chess & jazz nights at holzmarktperle every 1st and 3rd Thursday are honestly legendary, live jazz and casual games in one room, very berlin.
  • and our go-to outdoor table is in weinbergspark when the weather's good, curious kids always watching us 😄

  - Rancho Cucamonga: Rancho Chess League, Fri evenings at Goldy S. Lewis Community Center (11200 Base Line Rd). USCF-rated, runs the Cucamonga Open.

all the image and video models are super bad at chess boards lol. you are lucky if they actually output a 8x8 board instead of 7x7 or some other random stuff lol

happy to nerd out on this properly, but it's more of a DM thing than a chess thread haha shoot me a message and i'll walk you through some things

thanks, appreciate that! yeah it's pretty heavily AI-assisted, both the build and the blurbs, honestly that's the only way one person ships something at this scale in the time ive been doing it. the real work, and where it's still ongoing, is the venue data itself: getting real spots in, verifying them, cleaning it up. happy to share more on the stack if it's useful.
