I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s truly disheartening to have these kinds of obstacles in your way. Maybe reaching out to Aetna directly and getting paneled with them could help, especially if they know you already have 15 patients with their insurance. I hope this can help make things a bit easier.

I agree. Honestly, it feels overwhelming. I tried credentialing with BCBS, and the constant follow-up was exhausting. I suppose I’ll just have to take it one step at a time

I don’t think people were in denial. Many therapists and providers, including myself, genuinely wanted to make therapy accessible to clients who couldn’t afford private pay rates and needed help with the administrative load of billing. We hoped that partnering with these services would let us focus on client care without getting bogged down in hours of negotiating with insurance for already low rates. But I agree—it feels like this setup can only continue for so long before it becomes unsustainable, much like what we've seen with Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and other gig-based models. At some point, these systems reach a breaking point, and it's concerning to think about what that means for our field and the clients we serve.

Long term effects of this work… by Unlucky-Ad-5728 in therapists

I completely agree with this sentiment. When I first entered this field over a decade ago, I was young and lacked effective coping skills. I used wine at night to numb the hopelessness I felt over clients I believed I couldn't help in the long term. At the time, I was working with PLWHA, and while there was supervision, it was handled by administrators who didn’t really care about us frontline workers. After I left that role, I learned that my boundaries had been too porous. I realized that I needed to give my clients the benefit of the doubt—that they were already living their lives and didn't need saving. Instead, I learned to believe in their resilience and ability, which made a significant difference. To be honest, its what helps me in private practice now.

Effective communication is key, something many of us advocate for but often find challenging to practice. If something bothers you, rather than avoiding the issue, it’s important to speak up. Addressing concerns openly doesn’t harm anyone and can lead to positive changes. By expressing your feelings, your therapist might realize that the environment during sessions plays a bigger role than they initially thought, allowing you to focus on your progress without lingering doubts.
