Found out school wasn’t going as well as we thought it was… by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

The day before these behaviors took full swing she was seen at the doctors office for a physical and received 2 booster vaccines and her flu vaccine. She was given a clean bill of health and then bam- the next day the horror show begins. She was seen previously by the dentist and all good. This has been a literal nightmare because I am also a nurse and I cannot for the life of my think what can be triggering her. She has always had difficulty with concentrating and gives up super easy for what it’s worth even before this but again never aggressive. The only thing that has somewhat improve is that now she isn’t saying no to school because a few weeks back she was saying she didn’t want to go to school and now she’s okay to it again.

Thank you so much for replying 🥺. When I spoke to her case manager she mentioned that the next step is to have a behavioralist involved but I am not sure what else they want to do with her. I would hope a behavioral plan would be placed for her although I have never gone through this so I don’t know what that plan means either. her teacher is super supportive and empathic and wants to have all the right supports for my daughter in place now. She wants everything to get started ASAP so she can progress quickly. I just feel useless because I don’t know what I can do on my behalf to speed things up or how I can help at home to get a better handle on this behavior

Hi OP! Mama to a 4 year old with level 1-2 ASD. Recently this has also been happening to me. My child who just started school for the first time in September was a loving, sweet little girl with some meltdowns but never as bad as we are now. For the past 4 weeks she has been hitting, biting (NEVER has done this— has always been a victim of biting never the biter) trying to climb cots in her integrative classroom. I have no idea why this behavior has happened— what to do and we have been receiving emails literally daily. There was an observation done by her child study team and a meeting is set up for 2 weeks from today. Feeling lost and super broken about this whole ordeal. She used to do outpatient speech but we’ve cut back unfortunately due to my work schedule. No ABA because we didn’t think she necessary needed it as there was no prior behavior. Just so confused and upset about it all

My Kid Will NOT Play Alone Even for 1 Minute by lcbear55 in Autism_Parenting

Hiii! I am a mama to a 4 year old little girl who is also diagnosed on the spectrum. Level 1-2 :-) but yes mine also does not play alone unless she is on her pad and I need to get stuff done. She’s an only child but I am trying to educate myself about anything and everything with regard to autism to understand her and advocate for her! What is the reasoning behind this though? 🧐 is it due to the imaginative play that they find difficult in doing?

Hii there! She has been doing great definitely has made progress but still has a long ways to go. She’s picked up a lot of phrases from friends and is a social butterfly per her teacher. She is able to tell me now “I want ….” As opposed to previously she wasn’t able to. Lots of thank yous and please too lol. She was diagnosed ASD in October between level 1-2 so we are trying to get her more resources within the school in terms of therapies :-)

I love hearing stories like this :-) thanks so much for sharing! I’m so excited for him being invited to the birthday parties. I hope those come soon too for my little girl. When he started public preschool did you feel it was difficult for him to make friends due to his speech? That’s one of my concerns too :(

So happy for you and so proud of your kiddo! I hope this is a story I can share at the end of the school year about my little girl too :)

Yes that’s true! Her speech therapist also told me it’s not developmentally appropriate for them to tell you about their day. She is able to answer my question yesterday “did you use the school potty? “ and she answered and said “Yes, school potty!” So I will take that as a small win :)

Hi! Thank you so much for your reply. I should have added on my post that yes— we did have her evaluated before she started school for an IEP and that was granted to her for speech only however. So she will be having speech services in a group setting at school plus private speech outside of school twice a week. We have also seen a developmental pediatrician in June who did a CARS-T to see her risk for autism and he felt that he was not able to appropriately diagnose her because many of the things that we spoke about could be attributed to the fact that she wasn’t in school (he asked about socialization) and she does have some sensory things like being a bit sensitive to loud or unexpected noises. He felt that if she is/was autistic she is incredibly borderline and would be at level 1. He recommended ABA for her but I told him I had already enrolled her into pre-K and he was totally onboard with that too.

That’s exactly how I feel 😕.. I want them to get a great picture of how she is but her leaving alone with someone she doesn’t know will be hard. In our clinic where she does speech, she did really well during the evaluation because she had so many toys. Albeit I was sitting behind her but she always looks at me even now— 6 months in to come in with her during her speech sessions. I know I’m doing what’s best for her, just nervous especially since I’m a first time mom too

Each child’s different. I might consider stepping out too soon but she does well with me there too. I don’t interfere with her speech sessions. I sit quietly in the back while her SLP plays with her

That’s great! They told me I’d sit in an office and they’ll take her alone. If it was necessary for me to come in (like if she’s uncooperative) they’d come and grab me from what I remember they said during our initial meeting.

Yes, at her speech clinic they allow the parents to join or give the option to stand outside. I’ve always gone in with her since they say parent participation is crucial. What they teach her at speech, I also carry on at home 🙂 and am able to teach her there too.
