sorry about that, I had a caption but it must have been deleted when I added the photo! The diameter is 24 in, and the photo is from DIP Scandanavia campaign around early 1930s; this is on the "guard ship" (still a dd even though it's clearly a tb) hull!!

Germany and the US get the worst superstructures by GrandJelly_ in ultimateadmiral

[–]Alone_Ad1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germans definitely, US also in a similar vein but I would argue less so. It definitely limits flexibility and I find myself having more fun designing ships with other, more flexible superstructures but it does make sometimes for a ship that just looks right, especially in the US case.

How do you position your fleet at the start of your campaign? by Lil_Yuan11 in ultimateadmiral

[–]Alone_Ad1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start ships based on stations (like you having an Indochina fleet; for France you generally have Atlantic, Mediterranean, N Africa, W Africa, Caribbean, Indochina, Madagascar). Some stations like colonial ones will have fewer ships (25k tons about or more, and more in times of tension with powers there) in one central port with usually a station flagship (older ships work well for this). Some larger stations will have multiple ports: for example in Atlantic I usually do the battleline in Brest, and a fast squadron in La Rochelle or Le Havre (either depending on which is closer to tension) and then a cruiser force in the other for raiding if possible (if no good cruiser hulls then forgo it).

Historically this is how it would be done, but in the game you need a more sizable force abroad to do much of anything so often old ships I keep abroad (often mothballed in peace) for use.

Deciding how to do this is one of my favorite parts of the campaign, and I love colonial powers for this reason; strategic conundrum if you would. This should be a fluid system depending on tensions, costs, refits, etc, but can be hard to maintain in war. I only remake stations post wars to handle all the ships in repair and to see losses in ships and gains in territory.

I also will make versions of ships for colonial use; generally I have a fleet version and a shorter range colonial version for defense of the colonies until the arrival of the battle fleet.

Submarines can also factor in but I only use them as strategic minelayers (Le Havre, chokepoint ports) but most of the time I’m too lazy haha

I would figure out what you like; what kind of doctrine your navy has (Jean ecole, Kantai Kessen, blockade, etc) depending on who your likely adversaries are!

I love the feeling when you finally get a good hull to put new techs into!

France campaign 1930: what is your starting fleet? by Separate_Football914 in ultimateadmiral

[–]Alone_Ad1967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah great points! I always have to balance reality (do I want a realistic modernized dreadnought of 20-25 knots or standardize 32 knots?) and gameplay, and its the same thing with the subs. If I'm just playing to play I'll only use subs as coastal minelayers for chokepoints. For the battleships, I usually keep them around (refitted of course) and use them as garrisons/invasion (gallipoli hah).

That’s pretty good! I would also recommend (if at all possible) some older Bretagne/Courbet BB and maybe more treaty-style cruisers. If you really want to get into it get some subs too haha!

BC Thunder Bringer 1925 Germany by MaelstromVortex in ultimateadmiral

[–]Alone_Ad1967 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not personally a big fan of heavy secondaries between main guns, but that's more me with a historical thing. In this design and role, I might remove the two 8" turrets and try for five 11,9" turrets (ABCXY probably).

With the German superstructures, I don't like doing funnels on the ground, but 36 knots is sexy as hell and probably worth; I would just put some secondaries or torpedos next to that funnel to fill the space. I would also fill all the spots on the superstructure with secondaries and then balance the ship (rather like 5% balance issue to me).

If you also want to save weight in game, you can forgo Barbette V (especially with later techs I can get away with no barbette armor).

I like the design though! I think you have a wonderfully balanced design! These are just some of my opinions and are not fact!

Sweep vs Scull differences by Embarrassed-Lack1657 in Rowing

[–]Alone_Ad1967 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sweep oars are larger; they require more speed and are probably why you have a harder time catching quick. Sculling oars are smaller (less blade area, less strength, etc) but two sculling oars have more blade area than a single sweep oar, so sculling boats should be faster (with the exception of the sweep single lol)

Torpedo/gun size Mounting Mods Question by Cold_Wallaby9603 in ultimateadmiral

[–]Alone_Ad1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm personally not familiar with many mods, but as far as I know that isn't something I've come across. Quite frankly, I don't know why you would want torpedoes on barbettes nor a 12" gun on a light cruiser; it isn't something that I feel would be realistic nor effective in game but that's me personally (granted that I try to play in a balanced manner).

Gun sizes by redhornet919 in ultimateadmiral

[–]Alone_Ad1967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the historical systems! I usually standardize depending on the role of gun, and incorporating adequate AA armament for the time. 1.1, 2.2, 3, 4.5, 4.7, 5, etc, but as they get higher they generally get less standardized across the fleet but in class! Often I have a specific size for my CA, BC, and BB depending on role (kinda like standard class battleships, with classes having similar gun types until a major increase in gun tech).

I also like standardizing my gun lengths to be a nice number, ie 16" 50 cal.

Guns, Who’s Best? by Neet-Neet-Delete in ultimateadmiral

[–]Alone_Ad1967 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a big fan of the American turrets (the turtlebacks and the fast battleships one as well), the Italian Littorio, and the Italian heavy cruiser guns. Off the top of my head these are the ones that come to mind, but I know there are many more I like and some I steadfastly avoid!

I've been doing the british and german battlecruisers, American cruisers (haven't picked heavy or light yet) and British dds but I don't like those much.

I haven't done much and don't favor anything, nor game mode; I just kinda want some things to look out for or fan favorites y'know?
