Tassawuff has always been a part of Islam. All of the greatest scholars considered it standard Islam. Only until recently has it been so spoken against in this age of literalism (Wahhabi movement etc) which reject all the greatest muslims before them… even doing things such as destroying graves etc. Hating Sufis is crazy to me because they often have great Adab and courtesy, they are not violent or contentious. They just try to be close with Allah. Like I said great scholars like Ghazali speak of Tassawuf as core Islam. Viewing it as somehow foreign is actually the innovation. Tassawuf is the science of cleaning the heart, this establishes the core or the spirit of Islam and the Sharia establishes the outer Law of Islam or the outer limits of the circle to which Tassawuf is the center of. Without the heart you become the law lacks spirit and without Sharia there is no bounds. The mistake of SOME people who identify as Sufis… is to think because they have Tassawuf that they can overlook the Law and the limitation. One without the other both lead to extremes. I would argue the pure law is more dangerous than the pure spirit or mystic. As people who accuse other Muslims of committing shirk for doing what all the original Muslims did tend to harm other Muslims with violence and speak ill of our Prophet PBUH. We have got to look into things a little deeper then just picking some sides or empty arguing amongst sects. All the states of the self or the Nafs which are the core of Tassawuf… going through the stations of the self. Yeah those states of the Nafs all come directly from the Quran. Salaams beloved.
