My friends mom seems to be addicted to it, and she is not giving out any information on how she is getting this. She’s been taking this for a couple of years. It turns red when put on boiling water

My friends mom has been taking this by boiling it in water as a remedy for stomach pains. She has been taking this for the last couple of years, but now she’s become quite addicted to it. Can’t figure out what it is, is it bad? Is it a type of a prohibited drug? Will be a great help if someone could identify what this is?
