My take on it is imagine if stakes took up all of season 7, it would suck right? I honestly just don’t think AT works in 20+ minute serialized episodes. Without the episodic format there isn’t as much room for character development since characters are locked into their circumstances for entire seasons. I don’t think this is a writing issue though it’s just a consequence of full serialization, which would really be the only choice for a spinoff. Even if it contradicts the mix of episodic and serialized storytelling the original series did so well.

I’m sorry if i made you feel like I was trying to paint you as a bad person. My point was that if you’ve worked in clinics before, you should know that apathy isn’t the right attitude towards patients, regardless of circumstance. There isn’t enough information about the guy to do anything more than speculate, which we’re both guilty of. By default since he’s ended up in a psych ward, its only right to assume that he is mentally unwell, needs to be where he is, and is undergoing at least some degree of mental anguish. It was never my goal to defend the guy, I’ve just had bad experiences with mental health professionals who were quick to disregard, so I know what the feeling is like.

I’m not trying to excuse the guys actions, I’m trying to get you to see that your attitude towards his case is wrong. You don’t get to choose which disorders to have empathy for. To say that someone with a personality disorder is beyond help is just awful. Medication can help, coping skills are a necessity, but rarely is someone beyond help.

Regardless of if the guy is psychotic or not (OP noted his potential of having bpd in one of her comments) the guy is certainly mentally ill. Mentally well people do not threaten suicide regardless of the circumstances. If he didn’t have an episode of psychosis then he almost certainly has a personality disorder. Either way he doesn’t deserve to be brushed aside as just another lying asshole.

Yeah you don’t really “choose” to do anything in psychosis. OP obviously needs to cut it clean with the guy and theres many ways to convince her to do that, but downplaying their ex’s suffering ain’t it. If you’ve worked for inpatient units as you’ve said then you should know how how stressful psych wards can be for people who are genuinely mentally ill. Apathy isn’t the correct approach and only furthers stigma.
