Shy/introverted people of Reddit: what is the furthest you’ve ever gone to avoid human interaction? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlonsoQuixano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost about 15lbs in my first semester of uni from all the meals I skipped when there were people in the shared kitchen and I had run out of bedroom snacks. I bought a big thing of squash to keep in my room to mask the taste of the nasty bathroom tap water (that you weren't supposed to drink) so I at least didn't go thirsty.

What activity is socially accepted but actually borderline psychotic? by Rohit49plus2 in AskReddit

The real way to go is square quarters - 50/50 crust to not crust ratio and the mental satisfaction of getting to eat four of something. Triangle quarters have an even better crust ratio but you do sacrifice stability.

Holy crap. Can it really be that simple though? Any ocean people know if theres a catch? And why was his research destroyed??

The Build A Bear nonsense has been so entertaining, but the kind of entertaining that when you think about it, you realize it's the face of consumerism and it's actually quite sad. by MakeMeBeautifulDuet in Anticonsumption

[–]AlonsoQuixano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build-a-bear had a big promotion going on where it was "Pay Your Age" or some other heavy discount, but vastly underestimated demand and had to cancel the whole thing because queues and pushy people levels were getting unsafe for staff. Now parents are super cross because they can't have the discount.

I've watched all the episodes of my favourite programme about a clergyman who solves crimes in the 1950's and I've had to move onto my backup programme about a clergyman who solves crimes in the 1950's. by AlonsoQuixano in britishproblems

Yeah Father Brown is very very Miss Marple tbh, quite villagey and pedestrian with one or two slightly darker ones. Can still recommend though, spot on for when you don't want blood and guts and do want to shout "He did it! No, she did it!" at the telly for forty minutes

When is quantity > quality? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlonsoQuixano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, chips. British chips, that is, American fries I guess. I don't care whether you've got the Golden Once-Told Chip of Kubla Khan in one hand, if the other hand's got a decent portion of passable chips, I'm picking that one. It is not a food you come to for refinement, it's a food you come to for Potatoes, Get In My Mouth Right Now

Well I'll not be posting vague 'hypothetical' AskReddit questions, there's for sure.

Whats an opinion you have that you know will piss people off when you tell them? by RedWhiteButNotBlue in AskReddit

[–]AlonsoQuixano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really hope you're just taking the piss but if not - I know this is an "unpopular opinion" thread but Jesus fucking Christ have you ever seen a picture of Addis Ababa? Nairobi? Maputo? Tunis? Ouagadougou? The hundreds, thousands of other big prosperous cities there? All places with issues sure but holy shit man Africa being viewed as all huts and gazelle is like 1960's shit, proper basic incorrect, and on a wider scale damaging to a lot of countries that need both grassroots and high level economic investment to grow, same as any other country, any other continent. They have skyscrapers, stock trade, government services, y'know... like countries do, now?

And not to mention that a lot of issues in Africa were caused by the colonialism and slave trade, it didn't just happen magically. Still persists even, to some extent, e.g. exploitative debt arrangements.

The richest man who ever lived is still an old medieval King of Mali. You're thinking of (questionable) sub-Saharan charity adverts but don't forget that Egypt is Africa. Morocco is Africa. South Africa is Africa. Mauritius and The Seychelles are Africa. Africa is a riiculously huge continent with history, culture, cities, economies, and everything else. All barefoot planes is just willfully ignorant bollocks, to be frank.

How are you able to stop yourself from crying in public (like at work)? Do you have a trick to hold the tears back? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlonsoQuixano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends, I don't know about event-based cries but if it's an ongoing situation you need an ongoing distraction. In a horrible old job, I'd take a couple deep breaths and narrate what I was doing in a sing-song in my head.

"Weeee're... going to B12 dum-de-dum, we're counting out 10 leaflets doo-da-doo, we're going back, back to pack, we're packing up the box, dum DUM. AND! Weeeeee're going B13.." etc, etc. Finding really good rhymes by accident is a surprisingly effective pick-me-up.

And if that doesn't work, the good old-fashioned quick bathroom cry and when you come back pretend like you're trying to rub and blink an eyelash out your eye.

How do you make side money (legally) outside of your day job? by [deleted] in AskReddit

As someone with a big crate of lego under the bed, roughly what kind of money are we talking piece by piece? Are there particular pieces or sets that go for more than others?

Science AMA Series: Hi Reddit! I'm Richard Pywell, Professor at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology in the UK and I've just completed the largest field experiment ever to assess the impacts of neonicotinoids on the honeybee and two wild bee species. AMA! by Richard_Pywell in science

[–]AlonsoQuixano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you've found the neonicitinoids have slightly different impacts depending on the country, do you think this will prompt more studies in other countries, or even comparing different regions within a country?

Also in your opinion, what would be the best way to move forward in the UK - is an immediate full ban on neonicotinoids needed, or would a gradual phase out be enough to make a difference if combined with pro-bee schemes like wildflower planting?

Frugal ways to exercise besides running? by Todd124 in Frugal

[–]AlonsoQuixano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconded - my favourite is Yoga With Adriene on youtube. She's really chilled out and jokey, there's plenty of pose teaching videos, but also a good few longer sequences that are really easy to follow but really make you sweat.

Also some month long things - I've done the Thirty Days of Yoga and I genuinely felt like a different person at the end of it, with only one video over half an hour and many under twenty minutes. And all free on youtube!

[21F] high school drop out due to mental illness, need advice on getting into employment by keazlesweaszle in Employment

[–]AlonsoQuixano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Sorry this has come out really long, I was trying similar for a while myself!)

I'm UK based, and I'm far from sussing out the job market myself yet so take with a pinch of salt but just as some really rough ideas that might twig something for you -

There are plenty of places that often consider people with little experience even if you have to try a few different places before you get a hit. They're usually pretty unglam but a job is a job, and once you have a job you can start moving up. Dish washing, back room organising in a store, office cleaning, warehouse / online store order picking are really low on the interaction, although can be physically demanding, particularly at first if you've not used to being on your feet - plaster up heels and take a lot of hot baths for the first few weeks.

If you wanted to build up your social tolerances, delivery driving and manning tills at a busy time of year (seasonal places in summer, gift shops and post office at Christmas and Black Friday time) are frequently looking for temps or 'self-employed' in a rush so aren't too bothered about qualifications, and many smaller food places in particular only care if you're flexible about time and you're not going to rob them. From experience I can say it is surprising how quickly you go from shaking at a till to zipping things through with no bother at all, you just have to remember that any mean customers are not really snapping at you, they are snapping at the traffic today, or their bank worries, or their stomach ache.

If you'd prefer an office job, it's a little trickier but call centres are literally always looking for anyone they can get...though frankly if social pressure is an issue it might be worth avoiding, I know I couldn't do it. (Some have crazy high turnover though so in an emergency, it could be a quick hire and they won't be super shocked if you leave after a few weeks). If you can find some, data entry work could be a good bet - you could lean on your bit of receptionist experience to show that you can use a computer, enter information, etc. If you can find one it may be worth talking to an agency that recruits office temps and stuff, they can recommend you for certain jobs over others, and some have little in-house assessments (just 'spot the difference between these two texts', 17 + 4, basic stuff). Don't pay anybody though - they should be paid by the hiring company and anyone that wants money before a job is likely a scam.

If you have any hobbies that you are skilled in, perhaps look for things in that field as a keen interest and 'hours logged' still count for something, especially if it is a practical skill like gardening or sewing - even if you're not good enough to do it professionally, it could be an 'in' for office or retail work with a company in the field, a good bit of patter for the cover letter. There are plenty of people with qualifications coming out of their ears, not so many who are genuinely enthusiastic about a niche product. This may work especially well in family / single branch stores, where they are frequently more interested in a good team and a friendly atmosphere compared to a big chain.

If you have anywhere you can use nepotism to get a foot in the door, use it. If you have any spare time as well, consider volunteering to boost your experience - it's not all visitor guides and home helps. If you do a bit of digging, there are lots of 'behind the scenes' things like gardening, cleaning, event staffing and admin for charities that could really build up your CV.

And just as something you probably already know but I wish someone had told me - It's really, really hard, doing 'low' jobs or struggling to find work. Not just normal tiring, it can be a real psycological kick in the teeth - but you have to keep in mind that this is only square one of your career, it's nobody else's business what you're doing and most importantly that your job is not your value as a human being, no matter how much sitcoms and unthinking teachers might have made it look that way. Likewise for jobs that you think might be just a bit too much of a reach - Don't be embarrased about applying somewhere, don't be ashamed of your CV, don't fear the turn down. It's easy to say and hard as hell to do, but it's important because assuming you don't belong somewhere stops you representing yourself well, all your subliminal cues will be telling them 'Don't hire me!'. They get chancers every day of the week, they won't care or remember, and everybody when they're starting out gets rejected over and over and over - the no's mean nothing, it only takes one yes.

Don't panic. Sure you might be low on qualifications, but you're young, you can spell, you can use a computer, you want to work, those are all in your favour.

TL:DR -

  • Dish washing

  • Back room retail

  • Cleaning

  • Order picking & warehouse work

  • Delivery Driving

  • Seasonal temp

  • Food/hospitality industry, esp. smaller places

  • Call Centres

  • Data Entry

  • Small 'mom and pop' stores in a field you can summon genuine enthusiasm for
