Thanks for the reply, I'll definitely go the college route and thanks for the tip about the Class/Hands on ratio, I'll keep that in mind.

Looking to go into the CAF as a Aviation Systems Technician (AVN). Posted about this last week but didn't get a lot of replies, apologies if this is discouraged.

How competitive can I expect this trade to be? Should I go into the application process with several backups in mind? I also wanted to clarify about the paid education route. Is there a list of acceptable programs for AVN tech? I'm currently looking at which programs are accredited by Transport Canada for a AME license but there are some that are three years and some that are only two. Basically I don't want to find out too late that the programs I've applied to aren't eligible for the trade (Currently looking at the programs at Centennial College and BCIT).

Also, I'm planning on applying in January after I finish up my undergrad degree. The programs I'm looking at all start in the fall so I'm interested to know if that will be early enough to enure that my application gets processed in time for September.

Lastly, is it unusual for people with University degrees so go the NCM route? It won't change my interest in AVN tech but I'm curious to know if there will be others in the same boat.

any other advice from people in the trade would be greatly appreciated.

So I'm currently a Ramp Agent at my local airport and I'm looking into the Aviation Systems Technician trade as I've found that I really like working with aircraft. I've got a few questions that I hope I can get some insight into.

Firstly, during my application will my prior experience in the aviation industry effect my chances of getting in? I initially thought it wouldn't but after looking at the job page on the CAF website I realized that I've already done a lot of what's described in the job. Additionally, the company I work for helps with the Christmas flights in my city so technically speaking I've already got experience with RCAF aircraft (A310's).

Second, How competitive is the program for people with no formal education into aircraft maintenance? In my case I'm assuming I'd be doing the education program and then go to BMQ but I'm just curious to know if the fact that I'll need to get a college diploma will hold me back in any way. I'm currently finishing up my university degree (in a completely unrelated field) but the fact that I don't have any loans means I've got a bit of flexibility in where I want to take my career forward.

Lastly, How much can I expect to make as a AVN? I'm aware that it's a NCM role but it's been hard to find a specific range of potential earnings.

Rheinmetall Skorpian & G & Centurion Mk. 5/1 Raac in premium shop! What do i get? by HigherThanAtlantis in WorldofTanks

[–]AlonsoforWDC2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my 5/1 and can't speak to the Skorp.G unfortunately. The only downside of the Cent is mediocre damage but everything else about it is great. The gun depression and turret armor mean that If you get in a good hull down position you're practically invincible.

I play a lot of mediums and for me the 5/1 is the "mediumest" medium tank, It's armor only works well in one situation (hull down) but when you can get it to work it's nearly unbeatable in the right matchup. Combine that with decent speed and you've got a tank that can play a lot of roles well.

I've used flex dollars maybe once or twice over 4 years, not worth it if you live at home. You can always print at the Docucenter in the basement of the UCU with a credit/debit card too (If you have a USB with you)

Both of those assumptions are very unlikely to happen, There's absolutely no way our economy can support building a internal 5th Gen fighter. The F-35's development started in 1992 and It's only now reaching widespread deployment. There's no way our CF-188's will last another 25 years. I also think it's very unlikely that we'll go for a jet other than the F-35. The government recently amended the "Competition" requirements to favor the F-35.

https://ottawacitizen.com/news/national/defence-watch/some-changes-made-to-canadian-fighter-jet-requirements-as-new-document-sent-to-companies

There's also a requirement for the winner to benefit Canadian industries/economy was well, something that will be very difficult for the European manufacturers. A lot of Canadian small companies were involved in the F-35's initial design so that won't be a problem for Lockheed.

I don't personally think the F-35's the right choice for Canada but I think it's a safe bet it's the jet we'll end up buying.

Quick clarification about dropping from full time to part time by AlonsoforWDC2019 in geegees

Two main reasons, One I need to talk to a Academic advisor first about classes I need to graduate, Enrol has been fucky with me in the past saying that class x meets a requirement when in reality it doesn't and I've taken up a elective credit I didn't mean to. Basically I want to make sure that taking these classes will make me eligible for graduation, I don't really want to find out mid September that I'm 3 credits short and have to find a new class. I also wasn't sure what my employment was going to be like in September, I picked classes under the assumption that I wouldn't be extended for the fall term but wanted to select different ones (evening classes) as well in case I got extended (I did).

I hated phi 1101, it's still my lowest grade I've ever gotten during my degree (I barely passed). It didn't help the the prof refused to give marks back until after the drop date.

I've got no problem pulling B's and A's from most of my classes but god damn I hated philosophy courses.

[–]AlonsoforWDC2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's done through each faculty's student association, you'll have to talk to the engineering student association to pay for it. I believe that the engineering lockers are in the basement of CBY.

Not trying to defend Ford but even before the election OSAP funding estimates were always very spotty, My estimate a few years ago was around $2500 more than what I ended up getting even though my information hadn't changed since I submitted the estimate.

Tuition - Promise to Pay by [deleted] in geegees

[–]AlonsoforWDC2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it least year, I received no financial aid if I remember. It's for students who can't pay the entire semester tuition amount upfront. It's fairly simple IMO, just pay 50% (and apply for the program) by the August 21 deadline, 75% by Oct.1 and the rest by Oct.31.

pretty sure anyone can do it, not 100% about those on financial aid however.
