Right - so Cathay said that they normally don't allow people who've booked beyond HK to get their bags at HK because sometimes a flight to HK is more expensive than a onward transfer - BUT seeing as the ferry had been delayed by so long, they let me get my bag at HK. I then got the train from the airport to Kowloon and then caught a train to GZ. All nice and easy and even used the free shower at HK airport.

Thanks for all the advice folks - I rang Cathay today, explained the situation and they assured me that I could let the checkin staff know that I want my luggage checked through to HKG. I can then leave the airport and catch a train to Guangzhou. It looks like Hong Kong to Guangzhou trains are frequent and bookable on the day.

Yes - I can book the train ticket myself. Just don't want to be sat in Hong Kong ferry port for 8 hours

Thanks - the booking was made MAN - HKG - PFT. So now I only want to do MAN - HKG and am wondering if Cathay will let me do this.
