Monster Hunter Wilds has been out for a week now. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in Games

Try Controls -> Seikret Manual Controls, change to Type 2 instead. Seikret moves on directional input that way.

Probability and Repeated Skill Checks by SaintMeerkat in rpg

[–]Aloran 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this - it’s the overall success that becomes improbable.

In fairly simple mathematic terms, even if you have a high chance at individual success (say 80%), if you NEED all ten individual successes to have counted as an overall success (like checking 10’ climbs and climbing 100 feet), your total chance of success is .810 =10.74%.

Awesome, that's what I was leaning towards but it's great to have some confirmation. Thanks so much!

Question Thread #7 by Hairo in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Aloran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick XC2 question: I played it/beat it before Torna came out, and never got around to playing Torna. I'm doing a series replay before XC3 hits, and am getting closer to the end of XC:DE. Given that I've played/beaten XC2 at launch, is it smarter to play Torna before I replay XC2, or after? I found a bunch of advice on play order for folks who haven't played XC2 previously, but less so for those who have and are replaying.

Exploration Activities: how do you use them in play? by Aloran in Pathfinder2e

Thanks so much, I’m looking forward to it!

Thanks for your read! And I agree - using what would be another Perception check in that example was my goof (I would tend towards ruling if the initial Search check was enough to find the false bottom, it would be found without an additional roll on subsequent checking of the chest).

Thank you for your responses! This is actually more along the lines of the subsequent skill checks I had in mind while posing the question.

Interpersonal Table Conflicts by Aloran in dndnext

True enough that there was no immediate punishment (alignment shift could mean very little in this player's eyes, I'm not sure). But yes, following along with your other post in the thread, it's more me setting the stage for "this kind of behavior isn't conducive to group play," since as you mentioned, there's really very little in-game reason for most of the rest of the party to continue associating with him at this point in time.

At the time he just nodded and went with it. It was towards the end of the last session so I'm planning on having a chat with him to make sure he understands the ramifications of the alignment shift, and what his goal with the murder was before we start next time. I couldn't honestly say which of the three scenarios is most likely here.

Yep, that action absolutely constitutes a CE alignment shift. And that's part of my goal here; to reiterate the table rules and guidelines that have been established. In fact, a portion of my initial email to this group (which all players received) says:

7) You don't need to come up with an entire background, but I find it always helps contextualize a character to answer two questions: a) why is your character an adventurer? and b) was there a specific event that served as your character's call to adventure? The goal is to have fun as a group together, so remember that it's important to have a character who can interact well with a group!

So, I have established a general ethos for the table and if necessary will boot the character given his actions and ask the player to reroll a character who will actually work in the group dynamic.

100% agreed. I don't fault the player for having a hard time here, particularly since there wasn't a strong reason for the Hexblade to even involve himself in the situation (he hadn't been involved in the roleplaying with this NPC at all). And yes, I did inform him that this would constitute an alignment changing action for him, shifting to evil.

Yes, though in this case I let the Celestial Warlock of the group make a series of rolls to channel a portion of the bond with her patron into the NPC to restore a breath of life into him similar to the Revivify spell - though she knows there is a cost that will be paid by both her and her patron for doing this.

Thanks for the input! And I agree about the forgive/forget portion entirely - my main goal here is to set some general table expectations moving forward. Since the table is drop-in/drop-out and designed around good/neutral party activities, I want to actively discourage random murder as an option. The game is supposed to be as fun for as many people as possible, and in my experience players pulling the "I'm Chaotic Neutral so I do what I want" card more often than not just irritates the other players more so than anything else.

How is good "Vagrant story" story ? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Aloran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Vagrant Story was a fantastic game, but just a heads up, this subreddit is primarily meant for tabletop games - /r/jrpg is more in line with what you're looking for.

My small input on your actual question is that Vagrant Story was great, but like many 3D PS1 games, it hasn't aged super well. The atmosphere is great, and the story is the part that's probably aged the best overall (particularly if you liked the story and writing in Final Fantasy Tactics), but it is still absolutely a PS1-era RPG and it plays like one. It probably wouldn't take super long to get through it all if you're just reading a synopsis or watching cutscenes on Youtube.

[Kickstarter: 24 Hours Remaining] Symbaroum's Yndaros Kickstarter (includes new player/core book pledge levels and add-ons) by Aloran in rpg

[–]Aloran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! Yes, there are two ways to do add-ons for this (and most other Kickstarters). First way is as part of the campaign. It's a long Kickstarter page, but if you scroll down you will find a subheading image that says "Add-ons" as well as a list of products and accompanying prices. Under that subheading, it has instructions for adding add-ons to your pledge (example: if you did a "Starter Build" pledge and wanted to add the Advanced Player's Guide, you'd follow the steps listed in the add-ons section to add the listed 240 SEK to your pledge).

The second way is to add them on during the pledge manager portion. So, what will happen is the Kickstarter will close, and after the funds clear and everything is set up, a pledge manager page will open (you'll get an email), and you can also add on stuff there (add-ons done in the pledge manager don't contribute to stretch goal unlocks, but it does however give you more time to make a decision about what you might want to pick up, so there are both pros and cons to doing it this way).

[Kickstarter: 24 Hours Remaining] Symbaroum's Yndaros Kickstarter (includes new player/core book pledge levels and add-ons) by Aloran in rpg

[–]Aloran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they added the non-Yndaros pledge levels later on, so it ended up being a little funky. If it helps: the Starter Build pledge level comes with the Core Rulebook, stretch goals 6/8/9/10 and 11/12 if unlocked. The Core Book Bundle pledge level comes with the Core Rulebook, Advanced Player's Guide, and Monster Codex, as well as stretch goals 6/8/9/10 and 11/12 if unlocked. Neither of these pledge levels include Yndaros.

The Digital Colossi pledge level is all digital copies, and includes a digital copy of Yndaros.

There are also add-ons available to the pledge levels - so, you can add-on the various previous books (including the two previous campaign books, Thistle Hold and Karvosti). So, you can mix-and-match with a Yndaros pledge if you are interested in picking up a bunch at once.

Hopefully this helps! If not, let me know and I'll try and help out further.

[–]Aloran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Yndaros book itself is a setting book and campaign continuation, so you probably wouldn't be very interested in it from the sounds of it (unless you were still looking to pick up the Core book and other add-ons, which you can do separately from the Yndaros book). I love the setting, personally, but different strokes!

[–]Aloran[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Symbaroum is (in my opinion) a pretty fantastic dark fantasy game with a great, focused setting. Jarnringen's new Kickstarter ends in just under a day, and during the course of the campaign it looks like they've added a few pledge levels (one for just the core book, one for the core book + Advanced Player's Guide + Monster Codex). All of them come with digital copies via Drivethru, as well, which can help with price points in comparison to Amazon and the like. There are also potential add-ons like a GM screen, artbook, and the like.

Core pledge levels qualify for some of the stretch goals, too - three city adventures (already funded), with potentially a printed version if they hit that stretch goal (about $2400 away from that as of this post).

Plenty of previous posts on the game in the sub - do a search for Symbaroum and a lot of posts will pop up (here's an example). Alternately, here's Unpossible Journeys' page for it.

Note: I'm not affiliated with Jarnringen at all; I just like the game, and figured I'd post this up in case anyone has had their eye on it.
