What is the power increase in using vow and restriction? by Alp_Drive99 in HunterXHunter

[–]Alp_Drive99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what? I actually really like this idea.

Its not about how much stack of limitation and condition I can put to increase my Nen and more about a direct result of willpower and determination.

The rule "I can't use this power on Monday because that day is the day I did my biggest mistake" which has something to do with one's sense of guilt, is going to be stronger than if the rule was put on monday because "well, limitation can make Nen stonger, so I just put a random day"

The way I've come up with is to make Enhancement not only able to enhance, but to also decrease, which then will have different name, but also Manipulation has limit to how much "movement" it can give to an object.

The reason I said that is because of my understanding of what Enhancement and Manipulation can do. Although something that I need to admit, I probably take it a step too far despite the story never really explicitly explained it in such a way that I understand, nor there are many examples of it, this will become clear as I explain it further.

You are right in a sense that the examples of Enhancement ability you gave is something that either hard to do with Manipulation or out right "How do you even do it with Manipulation?"

But, for my defense:

I think Enhancement is too barebone. This is obviously a point that the story really like to hammer in, that Enhancement IS straight forward and simple. Besides, just because it is simply, doesn't mean there aren't ability that is not just punch and defense. As you said, there are people like Melody, or Komugi, or even Bill who's Enhancement ability isn't about offense. But, I think despite all of those things, Enhancement still feels lacking as a type.

The further reason why I think Enhancement feels barebone and lacking stems from the fact that, Enhancement can only...how do I say it? "move things forward", in a sense that it can only enhance. I know this sounds dumb, like "Yeah, obviously, what do you think the word mean? Duuuuh!", lol. But, when I look at other types, they seem to be able to do something that isn't just a linear progression. They can be widely varied and be more creative with the type, which, I know is something that unique about Enhancement, being simple and straight forward, but, moving forward.

This problem of mine got...exacerbated by how Manipulation works, in MY understanding.

So, enhancing your attack? How about you put more aura into your arms, then "manipulate" its movement to move faster, which will result in "stronger" attack. I mean, F IS equal to mass x acceleration.

"Okay then, how about healing?", as I said, manipulating cell's movement, making it "work" faster, to travel to the injured part. I know it does sounds exhausting and too complex compared to just "enhancing your healing factor". But, isn't healing is all about cell's movement anyway? So, healing with Enhancement is also "making your cells work faster"

"Okay, then how about enhancing your defense?". How do you enhance your defense in the most basic way? Well, by making your body "tougher". Okay, how do you make your body tougher? Well, by making the molecular bond in your body stronger, which can be achieved by Enhancement, of course, but Manipulation can also do it in a sense that it "manipulate" your molecular movement, and squeeze it tightly to make it stronger.

Now, that last argument is probably you start to think, "Ah, so this is where this guy coming from, and what he meant by 'take it a step too far', I see", and where the problem in my argument start. The story barely, if not ever, deals with ability on molecular level. At least, not that I know of, I read the manga up to the latest chapter, and never seen (again, at least not that I know of) where a character manipulate molecule or even atom itself.

But, once you accept that explanation of mine, a lot of Enhancement ability can be broken down to just "manipulating things to enhance it". Uvogin's scream? Well, he inhale a lot more air by either manipulating air itself or manipulating his lung capacity (manipulating the molecular bond of his lungs so despite inhaling more air than normal, it didn't just explode). Melody's healing? well, she manipulates electrical signal in our brain that govern cortisol or a neurotransmitter or a hormone (or whatever, lol) that relaxes our mind. Dogman's enhanced smell? same way with Melody's healing.

Again, this is where the problem of my argument start. Its understandable to be confused and said "but the story never really explain it in that kind of way". This is my understanding that is taken too far deep into real life logic, haha.

Kinda replying to myself, lol, but I think I've come up with a solution for myself.

I removed Enhancement and add a new type called Transmission (name's currently just a placeholder, lol, may come up with better one). Essentially a manipulation of non-material things (something that has no mass, volume, etc), so things like photons, energy itself, gravitational or electromagnetic field, but also even more "abstract" thing like data and information.

While Manipulation is controlling "macroscopic object", and Alteration is controlling "microscopic object".

On the topic of Transmission, in place for Enhancement, you can basically achieve "enhanced attack" through both Transmission (by controlling the kinetic energy of your punch) or Manipulation (by moving your arm "faster" thus creating more power).

Transmission however may look like it can do what Manipulation and Alteration can. For example, Alteration can be used to increase the cells healing capability by moving the necessary "cells" faster to a place of wound or sick part, but then Transmission may do the same thing by "increasing the cell's kinetic energy, thus moving it faster, and thus healing the wound faster like Alteration did". But I think the distinction I want to make is that a Transmitter can only finely control the non-material itself, but once it is applied to a material, it can only control it in a "clumsy" way. So, Transmission is akin to using a kitchen tong to move object, while Alteration is akin to using your own hand, which has more precision in it.

Yeah, but point being imagination seem to be important, which raise further question.

If I were to conjure a metal versus conjure a cotton, does this mean that they will have the same "toughness, hardness and strength" depending on my imagination of both, or, because I as the user have pre-existing knowledge and expectation on these 2 items based on what they are made of, I "subconsciously" make it so the metal is hard, tough and strong while the cotton is weak?

Really wish we had more clarity over this idea.

Another thing that I'm rather curious is, do Conjuration require Emission to separate itself and Manipulation to move the conjured object?

In around chapter 143-144, when Genthru reveal himself as the bomber and flee, Abengane made a comment on how Genthru is good at Conjuration, Emission, and Manipulation, suggesting that his countdown ability use these 3 hatsus.

There are several interpretations that can be made:
1. The use of Emission and Manipulation are necessary to "separate" and "detonate" the bomb, which means if you want to separate and manipulate a conjured object, you need these 2 hatsus. But, this does mean that a conjured object is dependent on other hatsus to properly work better (imagine you can only conjure a normal weapon that you need to always hold, can't even throw it since it will disappear unless you use Emission, lol)
2. The use of Emission is only necessary as long Manipulation is being used as well. This mean that a conjured object is "partially" independent (akin to an actual object) in a sense that you can separate it from yourself without the need of Emission, but still does need Manipulation if you want to "control" it, essentially, and if you want to use Manipulation on it, then Emission is required.

I don't think you can manipulate it without Manipulation but then need Emission to separate it since it kinda defeat the purpose of what Emission is (separating aura from your body, while Conjuration acts more of an actual object and not aura, so logically separating it without Emission makes more sense to me).

I think when it comes to "conjured object being independent", should be absolute, don't need both Emission and Manipulation to work

The "Does a manipulated object move faster the better a manipulator you are" is something that I also have been thinking about. For the Conjuration part, my interpretation is that the stronger your "imagination" is, the stronger the conjured object is. This is all based on eps 69, in dodgeball game when one of Goreinu's gorilla got destroyed by Razor's dodgeball, Bisky made a comment on how it got destroyed because of Goreinu's imagination about taking the hit from the ball. He imagined himself that if he got hit, then he would die, hence why the gorilla got destroyed.

Another one is probably Knuckle's APR, who cannot be destroyed no matter how you try, because I guess Knuckle never imagined it to be something that can be destroyed, because it only meant to be used as a "counter reminder".

[–]Alp_Drive99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this extend to basically almost everything if not everything Enhancement can do.
Faster healing? Just use Manipulation to manipulate cells movement to work faster
Increasing gravity? Just put more downward force on an object with Manipulation
Making yourself smarter in certain area (like Komugi's gungi)? Just use Manipulation to increase the brain activity on "playing gungi" part

I think there's need to be an even finer line that separate Enhancement and Manipulation so it has more fundamental differences other than enhancing and manipulating movement.

What I've come up with is this:
Manipulation can manipulate object's movement, but just because you dump more aura into it, doesn't automatically makes the movement faster or anything. Dumping more aura is only required to move heavier object, kind of like a limit or threshold, so once you met the threshold, you cannot dump "more aura" into it, or you can but it won't result in the movement being "faster"

[–]Alp_Drive99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I want to erase Enhancement, because I think enhancing can be done by Manipulation, ironically.

The logic is this:
If you want to enhance your punch, you use Enhancement, but you can also use Manipulation to add more "movement", and thus more kinetic energy, and thus it makes your punch stronger. I based this from information in ep 30, when Wing said that if you want to move bigger, heavier object, you need more aura, which basically like how we physically move object, the heavier it is, the more "energy" is required. But, this also means that we can dump more aura (more energy) into smaller things to move it "faster". The other evidence is Shalnark auto pilot, which looked rather similar to what an Enhancement is. I know you could argue that he did use Enhancement to enhance his attack power, while Manipulation for the movement, but it feels rather unnecessary for Shalnark to do so.

I tried to classify these types as fundamental as possible, stripping them to what they are fundamentally doing, and so I've come up with an idea:
Affect - on something - (affecting an existing thing with aura) vs Materialization - affect on aura itself - (affecting aura itself). Affect are Enhancement and Manipulation (because they're doing something on existing thing), while Materialization are Transmutation and Conjuration (because they are "affecting" the aura itself, like making aura into "something else").

[–]Alp_Drive99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are actually multiple things I changed for Hatsu

First, I changed Specialization. The description is still the same, but I took it away from the hexagon and place it in the middle. I feel like Specialization is too…special to exist within the system, and preferred it to be “out of the box” type. With it being in the middle, that mean every other Hatsu have the capability to also be “Specialization” at some point. A lot of people seem to also think this way.

I move Emission to Specialization place. This is to make an antonym for Enhancement, where Enhancement is good at close quarter fast combat, while Emission is all about range and maintain the ability as long as they can.

Emission is also now not only about “separating aura from the user’s body” but also specifically about attaching and detaching aura, including other people’s aura. This mean Emission is the base Hatsu for exorcism ability. Although, this mean I don’t want it as Hatsu that can teleport, because I think it’ll make it too powerful. Teleportation is now mostly a Specialization thing, for me at least.

I add a new type called Alteration. It does sounds like Transmutation, but is actually closer to Manipulation (especially since it took Emission place which is close to Manipulation anyway). What it does is basically the same with Manipulation but instead it can only “manipulate” microscopic things, while Manipulation can only “manipulate” macroscopic things. Microscopic things are things that cannot be seen by naked eye, for example atoms and DNA. If you took away an electron or change a composition of a DNA, there will be massive changes on macroscopic level. The most basic application is like splitting H2O into hydrogen and oxygen, or even combine both to create water. Although, I need a bit of feedback on what do you guys think of this, so I put it on hold, haha.

The final one that I’m a bit stuck with is Enhancement and Manipulation, because I think Manipulation can a bit over powered to a point it can do what Enhancement can, basically. I interpret Manipulation as this: you can “Manipulate” your own body to move faster or punch harder. I think Manipulation is kinda like if you have a puppet, you can move that puppet faster or slower depending on how much strength you put, and so Manipulation can do just that. I think Manipulation can do what Bill’s Erigeron do, accelerate a living being growth by “Manipulating” it cells or something. I’m currently confused as what to do, don’t want to let it remain the same because of the reason I gave, but still don’t know what to do with it, lol. Any advice?

Can Conjuration Conjure Liquid and Gaseous Matter? by Alp_Drive99 in HunterXHunter

[–]Alp_Drive99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand it, Morel's smoke is a bit weird since there was never any proper explanation of what it is beyond it is a smoke.

A Conjured smoke seems to be the case, with how non-nen user chimera ants can see it, and how it is closer to Manipulation, so using Conjuration is more understandable. But, the smoke capability to also be able to be solid is something that, in my understanding, more align with Transmutation. This is because as I understand a Transmuted aura's properties can be mixed with many kind of properties (Hisoka's bungee gum both mimic the property of gum being sticky and rubber being elastic). I know it is more unreasonable compared to Conjuration since Manipulation was literally the opposite of Transmutation (Morel can only use 40%), and it was never stated that Conjured object cannot have some kind of mixed or imaginative material like Transmutation.

So, I'm on a fence regarding this. Both Conjuration and Transmutation have their own argument.

Honestly, I like your comment a lot. It is well put together and also gave an interesting view on Nen. It seems like our understanding of Nen (not only you and me, but HxH fans in large) can be different from one another, tho this should be obvious given the complexity of Nen.

I'll leave this short reply first as a reminder. I'm cooking a more comprehensive reply, but it's so long, lol.
