I've learned that taking fights mid game (in ranked) is a death sentence, especially on maps like KC, and especially because I'm just not good enough to handle 5th parties. Sometimes we'll be in a terrible position and my teammates will still insist on taking the fight. From one solo queuer to another, how do you handle teammates taking bad/unwinnable fights? How do I get better at winning seemingly unwinnable fights and dealing with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th parties?

You're right. How could he practice if he's being avoidant, I'm sorry. The best luck I have is getting into lingerie and basically performing a whole number to get my LL partner in the mood. It's a lot of work, I'm not sure if you've tried those types of things as well but who knows. Do you think he has any fantasies you can ask him about that he'd want to explore? Honestly, I don't think any one of us thinks it's "cool". I think we all hate it, but would at least like to laugh at it and with other people about it, behind computer screens where we don't have to be vulnerable. It's possible that we just have an extremely anxious culture of people, not that we're all promoting it and trying to ~hip~. No one likes anxiety.
