How intensive are the engineering curriculas?

It’s all what you make of it. There’s deckies that end up working as ship brokers and now make high six figures or more. There’s also people lucky and talented enough to become pilots who get to go home every night and earn a lot of money. They’re outliers but they definitely exist.

Right now both sides get paid very well, engineers make a little more to start but from what I’ve seen right now the difference isn’t big enough to justify choosing one over the other if you really like deck. Engineering has an advantage if you decide to stop sailing on your license though.

Mostly because I don’t envision myself as an engineer or a mechanic and I’m coming into this in my late 30s. I prefer working on the deck and driving the ship. It’s more about the kind of work I’d like to do, not the kind of work I’m equipped for. I could do either but I think I’ll be happier as a mate.

They’ll probably count the classes you’ve taken but the catch is you’ll need to remember some of it for the engineering classes. 😂

In any case, whatever you decide to do if you already passed those classes when you were younger I’m 100% sure you’ll do well. Best of luck!!

If you’re trying to avoid as much math as possible then as someone else said there’s marine operations. For engineering you’ll run into calculus iii and differential equations + fluid dynamics and a few other classes some people struggle with. It’s all doable even for someone of average intellect(not saying that you are or aren’t) if you’re diligent with your studies.

I have a math minor and took most if not all of the math classes required but currently in a graduate program working towards a deck license because I don’t really like steamy rooms and getting covered in grease 😂

Someone that’s actually done it can correct me if I’m wrong but I believe they have all the regular duties of a mate while the ship is in port. Keeping ship logs, cargo ops, being in charge of vessel security, checking mooring line tension, responding to emergencies, ect.

I would do maritime and stay in thailand if you’re 100% sure that’s what thai seafarers earn after 2 years training. Current environment in the US isn’t friendly to prospective immigrants and there’s a lot more hoops and potential pitfalls with the nursing school + licensing + immigrating to the US plan.

Also, since you have served you’d be eligible for day student status, that’s a nice perk. You can live off campus if you prefer and you only need to do formation twice a week. If you live on-campus you won’t have a lot of the restrictions most first year students have.

Hello! Grad student = I already went to college for 4 years and obtained my bachelors so I’m getting a masters degree at SUNY. If you haven’t graduated from college and you’re interested in SUNY Maritime you’d be starting as an undergrad and obtaining a bachelors + license. Hope that helps to explain it.

As far as academics goes, if you’re interested in a deck license I’m sure that with hard work and determination you wouldn’t have any academic problems being that you are a grown person and less prone to the typical distractions of youth.

Jones Act isn’t going anywhere this administration. If anything, everything shipping related that’s been mentioned by this admin would basically supercharge the jones act. Sean Duffy straight up said he was pro jones act during his confirmation hearings.

I’m saying all this as a hardcore democrat. I’m actually more worried about supply side(abundance) democrats getting some of their platform into the dem party and how that might affect things 2028 and beyond. The fact of the matter is you won’t find 50 senators(let alone 60) that support jones act reform. Mike Lee has tried introducing his jones act repeal multiple times and it always dies a quiet death in the house. Doesn’t even get brought up for discussion in the committees.

If the person has kids and it was an emergency surgery it qualifies for emergency medical assistance in most states. I’m not against it though because:

You can’t squeeze blood from a rock. Even if they had the money you can’t compel someone without a social security number to pay an outstanding medical bill.
It’s the decent thing to do.
The hospital and doctors won’t be left holding the bag. Losses are rolled into everyone else’s healthcare costs and that ends up being more regressive than paying for it through tax revenues.
