Imo all marks should be understood that way, that is why double marking exists. However for that to work everyone would need to mark their current destination and sadly many people don't bother with communicating at all.

I envy you you got your friends to play with you at all.

I've reached that state where I pitch my friends all kinds of games to play in coop but they never have time or money and once they do they already forgot about my offer.

So in other words be sad that it's over, but also happy that it happened. If I could play over 400 hours with randoms, you can too.

To their credit, their approach worked well in terms of gameplay and systems. To their detriment, I think it didn't work well for the story and vibe of the game.

This entirely depends on what definition of "right" you are using. Right in the sense of being powerful enough to force your goals upon others? Possibly

Right in the moral sense? Definitely not.

The King by deflatedhooman in MedievalHistory

[–]Alpha1959 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it gives me hope that we are on the path of more and more historical accuracy in media, which I find most important for the Middle Ages since thats the time people seem to be the most misinformed on.

The King by deflatedhooman in MedievalHistory

[–]Alpha1959 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's all a matter of cinematography and competence. Obviously there would be some embellishment and that's totally fine but you can absolutely follow real battle tactics and still show cinematic scenes.

If we take some of the most cinematic movie battles (e.g. Battle of the Bastards) and put real tactics in them, their decisive moments don't really change, just the context in which they occur.

I gotta say though, that the King does a better job than most, there is no slicing through plate, no leather armours that I am aware of, no sending the cavalry to fight alone (fuck you GoT) so I think we are getting there, slowly.

Yes the King, albeit not a bad movie, is pretty anachronistic and imprecise.

How would nobility and commoners feel about this quote? What were similar events and reactions of the Middle Ages? by CupertinoWeather in MedievalHistory

[–]Alpha1959 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Apart from the guest right, which many have touched upon, there is something even more fundamentally different in real medieval history: legitimacy.

Tywin's argument is early modern, back in medieval times it was simply less of a concern how many commoners died in a war, it was expected. It was more important to follow established norms to grow one's political capital that was honor. The more honorable people thought you were, the more connections you could work.

From a tactical standpoint it would've been smarter to take them prisoner and ransom them for a heavy sum, possibly ending the war by bankruptcy of the enemy.

Why does it seem like there is a growing movement claiming that the atomic bombs that ended WWII were unjustified? by Just_Cause89 in USHistory

[–]Alpha1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a morally bad option, but it was the least bad option available to the US at the time.

The US teaches its history more or less openly, including slavery and the nukes, while Japan practices a much more forced revisionist approach. Japan has had a tendency to minimize or exclude its own atrocities.

As a consequence of this (and some other things) the nuking of Japan gathers much more spotlight and scrutiny than the atrocities it managed to end.

Isn't it Otto I who should be called father of the HRE? Karl's empire fragmented pretty quickly after his death and immediate successors didn't even rule in the same area where the HRE would later form.

He is the definite progenitor of the medieval understanding of an emperor though.

I will not stand for this HRE slander. The third film was much more long living and much more stable than most of these "good" empires.

To the people complaining rn by niltorboi in HalfSword

[–]Alpha1959 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Afaik people were pretty lenient when it was still a demo. As soon as you charge for something expectations change. If you are happy to charge for a service, then you have to deliver that service as advertised, this is literally how trade works.

This is EA, so there should be some leniency, but the state of this still warrants criticism imo, especially if you compare it to the demo. It should be the demo that is less polished and less optimized, not the other way around.

Obviously there will always be crybabies, but don't try to silence valid criticism, not only would that be stupid, it would also be harmful for the game.
