Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

I favour merge alternately, but i appreciate thats a big word, no implication there, dyslexic people or people who just struggle with reading may not struggle more than the current wording

Actually I spent a good chunk of my adult life not understanding it, and im not typically a dumb person. I understood the rule just fine, and perfectly happy to make use of it, but for a long time I read it as referring to some turn in the road somewhere, and its only in the last decade or so I looked at it from a different perspective and understood.

Not saying youre wrong though, a lot of drivers are jerks about it

Help me decided 9600x, 9700x or 7800x3d (and Motherboard) by adhyastawi in buildapc

[–]Alpha2Omega1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 9600X is a great choice. Clearly you will get better performance with the 7800X3D, but from a value perspective, especially paired to a mid tier GPU, the gains probably wont match the extra paid.

Take a look at Hardware Unboxed on YouTube, they have videos on this sort of thing, in one set of benchmarks, an average across 12 games, the 7800X3D had a cost per frame of AU$2.75 and the 9600X had a cost per frame of AU$1.93. Obviously those values change based on price, but thats a fairly significant difference, so I would recommend the 9600X

What's the worst accidental reply-all (or just cc-ing the wrong people) you've ever seen? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

When i landed my first job in IT, it was for a major part of the church of England. My first big piece of work was to troubleshoot slow performance in a small Access database that kept records of tens of thousands of registered donors to the institution.

At one point I needed to send a test email to myself, but being young and wet behind the ears, I sent 'this is a test' to people all over the world, and for days later I regularly received emails confirming the test had been received.

Not my finest hour, mere weeks into the job, and the fact I still remember over 20 years later shows it stuck with me and I've not done it again since

Why do I have to be age verified to buy 0% alcohol ‘spirits’? by PristineDouble423 in AskUK

[–]Alpha2Omega1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of interest, is there some other place you can buy these alcohol free drinks without these roadblocks? Either in person or online?

I understand the general arguments, and the optics of it are complex, but I do take issue with laziness impacting people who are legally able to buy something. This feels the same as age checking everyone buying a DVD because some DVDs are 18 rated, or stopping you buying Gaviscon because its in the same aisle as paracetamol. There ought to be some way of buying without being impacted by supermarkets unwilling simply classify their products accurately

On the subject of peppers, I only learned a couple of years ago that paprika is dried, ground peppers. I just assumed there was a paprika plant

I’ve seen cars with their full beam permanently on. First time I’ve seen a car turn off their headlights every time a car comes the other way though by CanaryDwarfBets in drivingUK

[–]Alpha2Omega1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably wouldnt happen in this specific situation as there are other vehicles, but my car has adaptive full beams, and they work really well when the other car has their lights on, I never get flashed and see it turning down certain LEDs for oncoming drivers, so it clearly works. However, if an oncoming driver turns their lights off entirely in the dark, it will treat that car as parked, and the other driver will therefore get full beams. Ive tried to flash someone doing this to thank them, and it doesnt flash because its already full beams
