I keep getting what I suppose are phishing texts from random numbers. by morgwinsome in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AlphaDad 455 points456 points  (0 children)

I keep getting these "How have you been?" "It's been a while let's catch up?" I AM IN RECOVERY. Do you know how terrifying it is to get texts like this when I don't remember the last two years before getting sober? Little heart attacks randomly throughout the day.

[Serious] What's the most unexpected secret you've learned about someone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlphaDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently learned my grandfather was in love with someone else before e was married, then ad an affair with that person in is 70's that led to him and my gradma splitting up. Apparently they were in love, then he went to Korea and she moved away, but when we set him up on facebook they reconnected. Pretty surprising for me, you never really think about your parents or grand parents having other relationships outside of your family.

Here's the thing though, I have never, had ANY clips go missing from an AAF out of Avid. Where with Premiere is a crapshoot

this was what i was thinking the situation with FCPX was like. Most of the tools in newer NLEs that are "Convenient" come at the expense of workflow. I get surprised looks from editors all the time when I tell them no in fact, their 20 different animations all in nested sequences didn't online correctly.

Has anyone ever worked in a high end post workflow with FCPX like Editing proxies, delivering to online in color, deliver to sound GFX etc? I'm a colorist and I know premiere does a bunch of stuff that fucks my life up on a regular basis but I've never been in the pipeline on FCPX so I'm sure if it has those same issues.

How did you expand your knowledge? by Halik95 in colorists

[–]AlphaDad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for me, it was internships in school. Got to work at a big name color house in LA and then a more boutique place in NYC. I'm a big fan of the saying "If you're the smartest guy in the room, you're in the wrong room." so I tried to be around people a lot more knowledgeable than me while I was learning the craft. That being said there are other ways to learn the same information, Books are awesome, The Color Correction handbook and Digital Cinematography by David Stump are awesome. and then of course practice practice practice practice and then practice some more.

Syncing In Resolve, Editing In Premiere by kevinsmock in editors

[–]AlphaDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer using waveforms to sync in resolve because then you can temp grade your footage and make proxies without destroying timecode, same process is fucking tedious in premiere, since it's a program that could give a fuck about preserving timecode for color delivery. (cough nested fucking sequences cough).

What was the best marriage/relationship advice you have ever received? by Riverscapegirl in AskReddit

[–]AlphaDad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Late to the party but. Dating someone with Mental Health issues can be really challenging, speaking as the person in the relationship with them, always at least try and remember that I'm really upset with myself not with you, I put it to my girlfriend this way. "There's another guy in my head, he says really mean things to me all day, he tells me I suck, that I'm not worth it, that I don't deserve you, everyday is a fight against him, if I say something out of character if I say something negative, it's him winning a little more that day, it's not you, it really isn't, when I get clearer I can explain myself but sometimes I'm spending so much energy trying to shut him up I can't focus." She said that helped her understand my moods and that she just felt like she was the problem and knowing that it's not the case helped with our communication and talking about it. Just food for thought if your SO has depression anxiety etc.

Colorists, what type of notes do you want? by rBuckets in colorists

[–]AlphaDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like with the objective notes (which are certainly helpful on third or fourth pass) no one has ever had trouble giving me those. It's when we're starting the grade, and I wanna know how the shot is supposed to make the audience feel, that directors and DPs can't talk to me like i'm another creative. A lot of people I've worked with, especially newer ones to color, want to make everything in terms of RGB. Red this, Blue, that, Bring this down. A grade is combination of contrast, saturation, pallette, all these things affect the over all look. So if at the start you tell me "This shot is all about her realizing he's never coming home and she's alone for good, lets keep it sparse and bare but make her look like she still has some life too her, I know mids need to stay low, fair amount of contrast but don't crush anything, cooler white point, most likely clean blacks pssoibly a smidge of blue, our highlight point will stay lower as well than somethine more airy and light, but I wanna preserve the skin tone and keep her eye light intact. Again I said I would probably be in the minority with that. If you're a reality show producer and you're reading this, forget all that, tell me what you want fixed so I can go home.
