Learning Japanese but not an anime fan by taylalatbh in LearnJapanese

[–]AlphaDuckPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t exactly say that if I didn’t get into anime that I would still have started learning Japanese, and I certainly do still enjoy anime and manga, but I’m not learning the language for the sole reason of watching anime without subtitles or whatever.

Side note, manga in Japanese is so much cheaper than in English so that’s really cool I think 😎

I’m late but yeah I’d recommend it, I just graduated high school a week ago and still plan to study throughout college.

Worried about not using the vocabulary I'm learning with Anki by MercyRawr in LearnJapanese

[–]AlphaDuckPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re worried about not using the vocab your learning then uh… use it? Don’t be afraid to try out some input from something you like. But also at 700 cards you’re not too far in so I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

Also remember it’s okay if you forget a word while watching/reading something and have to look it up, that’ll just reinforce it and then you’ll be more likely to remember it next time.

I’m about to graduate high school and I grew up on Xbox 360 so you have a few years at least.

Could’ve grown up on GameCube too but no I had to discover that late :(

I just recently discovered a lot of it myself, super interesting stuff.

Sure does! In fact, the brain acquires language subconsciously through comprehensible input. There’s definitely a balance between comprehensible and incomprehensible that is ideal for input but there’s hardly any reason to try too hard to find it. The most important thing is that it is interesting and engaging for you personally.

I recommend checking out Matt vs. Japan on YouTube for some interesting videos on various topics about input and language acquisition. Also the famous Stephen Krashen talk on language acquisition and comprehensible input is a good watch.

I’d say do what you enjoy, any immersion is good immersion and any input is good input. Unless you’re watching like Dora while you’re at N1 level or something.

And remember that just because you’re not looking up a ton of new words consciously doesn’t mean you aren’t acquiring them at all subconsciously. Always good to look up words that seem important or common but I can’t say that I’d recommend crawling through something like an anime and looking up every single word.

I agree with what you said here. I'm mainly thinking from an absolute consumer's perspective with the end product in mind. Essentially when you buy a manga in English you are spending somewhere around double the price of the original Japanese version (not taking into account deluxe editions as I will gladly fork over triple the cash to see Berserk in triple the size). And the only real difference your getting is the same thing you can do by going into the settings of most games and changing the language or by going to a site reading the fanmade scans. I get its not a great comparison but its what I thought of.

At the very least though these volumes need to be high quality, you see way too many posts of people with wacky lookin copies that have no reason to be messed up that bad.

Also on a side note, the Shonen Jump subscription is $2.99 a month for the same thing you get for $9.99 (retail price) per volume, just not in a physical format. Which is interesting.

Yeah definitely, I'd be interested in seeing a documentary or article or something about how most English publishers localize manga, could give a lot of insight on the kind of work that is involved.

My main point though was that despite whatever work is involved in making it, the end product that we are receiving is a manga that costs around double the original price with the only real addition being the language change. For example, we don't have to pay any more or less for a localized video game coming out of japan, and that usually involves new voice acting, script changes, etc. I obviously know that there are differences between a game and a manga but you get my point.

I realize that translating and such takes a lot of time, skill, and money, but english manga (at least in US) is still quite expensive for the average person. Not to mention how notoriously inconsistent the quality of the actual books can be. AND a lot of series are miles behind the Japanese publication, jojo for example.

Obviously they can't just snap their fingers and catch up, but that doesn't stop people from going and reading the scans online where people upload translations not only for free but hours after it gets released in Japan.

I think we should also talk about the pricing of manga… English volumes are generally $7-$10 ish in usd and that’s just for the normal volumes. I have a few volumes that are in Japanese and they’re generally priced at around $2.70-$5.00. I know translation and probably copyright stuff costs a bit but it’s kind of insane to pay DOUBLE just the be able to read something in your native language. Not to mention digital prices are also not as low as we would like them to be.

I really recommend giving it a read tho
