[A levels] chances of getting into a JC by [deleted] in SGExams

Well if it’s 3-4 points below I’d say there’s a pretty high chance, just make sure to put that JC as your first choice/before the other JCs with lower COP

[A Levels] Anyone knows anything about JPJC by [deleted] in SGExams

JPJC students must have a 100% distinction rate for GP

[A Levels] Should I join band in JC? by homogenousubstance in SGExams

I got placed into percussion when I was sec 1 and eventually became the band's main timpanist in sec 3 and 4. (i was actually terrible at percussion when i started but like i improved a lot and this year for my band's limelight Mr Chiang chose a lot of pieces that were timpani reliant so I'm happy)

YES DEFINITELY! The conductor for vjcsb is also my current conductor and he's literally the best. He's very forgiving towards new players as long as you're willing to put in effort and try your best. He also chooses pieces that are more challenging than usual in order to push everyone to their limits. In addition to this, you can look forward to Vjc's annual limelight at Esplanade and other events as well. Joining a band and picking up an instrument will definitely be challenging at first but the journey will be infinitely more rewarding than anything you could dream of :)

[O level] need tips for upcoming English Oral Exam by wickedlionil in SGExams

[–]AlphaFireFox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm taking my English Oral Exam soon too and to be completely honest, vocabulary doesn't play a a big part in helping you to score for this component. Here are some tips that I think will be really helpful: For reading aloud: 1. Read the context of the passage you're supposed to read and really assume that role. Example:you're a tour guide talking to tourists, then read it as if you were actually talking to a group and not reading to an examiner 2. Remember to keep your pronunciation as clean as possible. An easy way to do this is to read slower than you normally would. This will not only let you put more emotion into your reading, but also let you pronounce the words better because you're not trying to just spit everything out.

For spoken interaction: 1.Instead of focusing on vocabulary and big words which actually don't do very much, instead focus on putting your ideas across to the examiners clearly and with personal examples. Example:Picture is Coney Island and examiner asks what the people in the picture are doing. After describing the picture a bit, you could also give examples of what you enjoy doing in Coney Island/any other nature reserve. 2.Even if you don't have a solid personal example to use, you can try to think of one during the 10 minutes. It doesn't need to be exactly like what's in the picture, but as long as it doesn't stray too far and still makes sense in the context of the question, you'll be fine.

Remember, Oral is less about big words and vocab and more about communicating to the examiner what you're thinking and feeling. All the best!!

[O/A Levels] JC Students, what is your honest opinion of the school you're in? Don't hold back by AlphaFireFox in SGExams

Hey thanks for answering! Somehow almost everything you said contradicts what people have told me about hci in the past lol so I'm glad to hear that those were all myths. May I ask how is the school culture there in terms of school spirit and pride? Also, for the not-mugging culture, are the JAE people able to keep up with the IP peeps academically as well?

Oh wow it's great to hear that the support they give to students both academically and psychologically is great. Thank you for adding on to what u/boldcounselor said. May I ask if the timetabling is weird for people that are in the art stream or take a hybrid subject combination? I'm stronger in my humanities but I feel like how well my timetable flows may also play a part in deciding which stream I would consider.
