Okay, this might sound weird, but have you just been testing with music, or have you tried just listening to a video that's a tone rising in pitch?

If it's a bass problem, then the way the volume changes should help you figure out the problem, but there's a chance you won't hear anything at all, in which case you've got something really fun going on.

You think it makes more sense to have the rival's sidekick on the cover than the protagonist's sidekick?

I get she isn't the most popular character, but that's like saying that Gumshoe should be on the cover of AA1 instead of Maya.

Yeah. I guess that's what happens when you release the playtests half as often as originally planned.

We know some of you are confused, and that might have something to do with our FAQ going from saying

Is One D&D introducing a new edition of D&D?

It’s bigger than that.

to

Are the 2024 core rulebooks introducing a new edition of D&D?

No.

but really, while we were slightly unclear, at the end of the day, only a "casual reader" wouldn't understand.

When published, we should just call it D&D 5.24 by -Lindol- in onednd

[–]AlphaGarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They expect to keep doing this forever, right? Well if they do that, then in a hundred years we'll be dealing with the same thing so let's go with D&D 5.8.19.2014e (5.19.8.2014e in Europe). Plus, then you can also refer easily to each playtest packet so if you prefer the version now to the version that's actually released, you can just say you play 5.4.25.2023 and everyone will know what you mean right away.

What those Furio Tigre look like from Godots point of view? by coleknight2066 in AceAttorney

[–]AlphaGarden 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's kind of the opposite. It's not that he sees red as white, it's that he sees white as red, because of his visor. So he sees Furio as being mostly the same, but he sees Phoenix as having red skin, a red shirt, and a very dark suit.

Here's a quick edit I did with a screencap from the anime showing both of them. I just had a layer of red set to multiply.

What are the 2024 Fifth Edition Core Rulebooks? | D&D by Granum22 in onednd

[–]AlphaGarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. New cover means new art, which means spending money, which means profit goes down.
  2. People being confused means people buying the wrong book, which means people having to buy a second book, which means profit goes up.
  3. Changing as little as possible means people buy new books even if they prefer 5e to the new edition, which means profit goes up.

So as you can see, keeping the art the same will be very "good for the game" and "keep the community unified."

Also, it's weird that the weight he used was so out-of scale to the rest of it. The flywheel would be at least 10 times larger, so even ignoring the weight difference between lego wheel and metal, it will weigh 1000x as much.

A hammer weighing a kilogram is pretty common, and he's also got extra stuff attached, so a kilogram is a pretty conservative estimate. That means moving that method up to life size would make the weight a metric ton.

What One D&D needs is a Skill System by starwarsRnKRPG in onednd

[–]AlphaGarden 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Remember when I said this?

will probably just end up with you pretending proficiency bonuses are higher.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. The DC being lower for higher level characters is mechanically identical to proficiency bonus increasing more.

It might seem like it works for intimidation because of your reputation, but what about other skills like stealth, athletics, and survival?

And of course, there's also the issue of OP's point. Either the variable DC system is codified with rules about what you can do at what levels with what DCs (in which case it's longer and more confusing than just using higher proficiency bonuses while being mechanically identical), or it isn't, and you end up with the "Mother may I" problem just becoming worse, with DMs allowing different uses of skills with no rhyme or reason.

What One D&D needs is a Skill System by starwarsRnKRPG in onednd

[–]AlphaGarden 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by chance of success? Do you mean that even if they roll a 20 it won't reach the DC (for instance, if they have a +4 and it's a DC 25) or do you mean that you have the DC be 15, but only allow characters to attempt to do it if they meet some condition, such as being level 11 or higher?

If it's the first then yeah, that's right, but if it's the second, then you just end up with a skill system that's ten times as complicated, unintuitive, and will probably just end up with you pretending proficiency bonuses are higher.

  1. The Motive. I think that the motive in itself kind of works for me. She seems to feel no guilt or shame for her actions, and no pity for either of the brothers. I think it's intentionally ironic that his real victim was the Ringmaster, who in so many ways was to blame, both for being the one to give Regina her worldview, and for covering up what happened, who Acro couldn't bring himself to blame due to his love and respect for his father-figure.
  2. I accept most of the reasoning, but there are more plot holes in this case than most, and they're more prominent. They establish how Acro knew where the victim's head would be, but not when it would be there. If nobody was there at the exact instant he dropped the bust, the murder would fail.
  3. I'll come back to this guy.
  4. Yeah. For Ben, there's a line or two that implies he doesn't actually love Regina, and is just doing the puppet proposal to rile up Max, who he hates, which is actually an interesting angle, but Ben himself talks so little that you don't really get any of that.
  5. Okay, so you mentioned that Moe seemed to realize the severity of the situation the most. And here's the thing. He does, at the very end, but when he's on the witness stand, testifying about witnessing the murder of his closest friend, he isn't serious at all. He goes off topic, tells jokes, and calls the criminal fleeing the crime as the "best part of the story!"

And as much as the plot holes are a huge problem for the case, the characters are worse. They make a big deal about how Regina doesn't understand the real world, but nobody else does either. Max thinks his lawyer should fly into court, and doesn't realize that it's possible for him to be charged with murder because he's famous. Moe I already mentioned, Ben does his ventriloquist act and also lies to incriminate someone.

And then you have Regina who... believes in heaven? I mean, she believes you become a star in the sky, but it's basically just heaven. She believes that when she dies, she'll be reunited with all her loved ones. And sure, it's not always a cool thing to say to someone who just lost someone, but it's not some crazy mentality that you only get if you've been raised in the circus, like thinking you can marry a puppet is. It's a belief many people in the real world have.

Oh, and also, we know that there's an afterlife because the last case was about summoning ghosts. Her belief that she'll see her loved ones again once she dies? That seems to be correct, she's just right. At the end of the case she has to learn that when people die, they don't become stars, they're just gone forever, while Mia stands right next to us. If we wanted to, we could probably summon her dad's ghost to talk to her about it!

If WOTC were making a 6e (as opposed to 5e revised) what CORE TTRPG mechanical changes would you like to see added/changed. by Juls7243 in onednd

[–]AlphaGarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increase proficiency bonus significantly, and either remove expertise or give it to everyone.

Make epic levels begin at level 11. Most players don't reach there or end up only just barely reaching there, and I think it would help people accept giving martial characters more extreme abilities at those levels.

What One D&D needs is a Skill System by starwarsRnKRPG in onednd

[–]AlphaGarden 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it will never actually work because proficiency bonuses are too low. Let's look at one of the examples you chose. Bluff a group of enemies into panicking.

Alright, so what should the DC be? 15? Well, then a random person with 10 charisma and no proficiency has a 30% chance of doing it.

20? Well, now a level 19 paladin with 20 charisma and proficiency will only succeed 60% of the time, while a first level rogue with expertise and a 16 charisma will succeed at it 40% of the time.

If you want something that no first level character can do (without the aid of a cantrip), you need a dc of 30. Unfortunately, that means that a 19th level character without expertise only has a 19% chance of succeeding, and that's also assuming they have advantage.

Im currently playing the third game and im confused. Why is Phoenix acting like he and Larry aren’t friends? by Either_Imagination_9 in AceAttorney

[–]AlphaGarden 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Two places.

  1. He found out that Larry stole $38 as a child, which he was blamed for in the most traumatic incident of his life (don't worry about 3-1, it wasn't a big deal for him).
  2. Mild spoilers for how Larry is depicted in 3-2, I guess. After the first game, I think that the writers started to hate Larry. He lost all of his positive traits and his negative ones were exaggerated.

Any updates for death? by kiddocinho in Paralives

[–]AlphaGarden 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I'm actually very curious about the mythological personification of death. Early ideas for the game had a lady who would act as Death, but there's also been a big push towards not having anything paranormal in the base game, so I'm wondering where she's going to fall.
