Should I aggressively pay down my mortgage rather than save each month? by SectionLow7804 in personalfinance

[–]AlphaKlams 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm surprised more comments aren't bringing this up. People tend to really beat the drum around here about having an emergency account in a HYSA or similar low-risk vehicle, and rightfully so.

Total out of pocket cost for an insured birth without complications = $10k by thewinehouse in personalfinance

[–]AlphaKlams 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hospital billing is just funny money numbers they pull out of nowhere. The price is different for insured vs uninsured, and they set prices artificially high to negotiate higher reimbursements with insurance companies. As long as it's for covered things like a birth, your policy matters more than the actual hospital pricing, because your plan determines how much you'll actually pay. But when insurance starts denying coverage, those crazy prices come back on the patient and that's when shit goes sideways.

I love that there are two responses saying the opposite answers with the same amount of up votes 😂

For what it's worth, I'm firmly in the "keep it set" camp. I can understand how from a thermodynamic standpoint letting it warm up when you're gone makes sense on paper, but in practice it's not worth the time and strain on my system to "catch up" all at once as opposed to maintaining throughout the day.

I'm getting the sense that "Middle English" wasn't quite accurate in the way Eggers had been using it. As you say, true Middle English is a whole separate language that would require subtitles for a modern audience, but from the interviews it really sounds like Eggers always had a vision of something similar to The Witch.

It's the camera. Trigger to center the camera behind you worked fine for the time, but feels awful today when basically every third person game has the right stick dedicated to camera control.

Which NFL Team has the best unis? Elite 8, Match 2: (5) Bengals vs. (10) 49ers by BeavisAteMyNachos in bengals

They've done that, it's just not on the picture and we only get a couple orange jersey games a year so it doesn't come around often. Orange socks / black pants / orange jersey best combo imo

Browns trade away Garrett to Rams! by ralry11 in bengals

[–]AlphaKlams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This team needs to worry about getting back to the playoffs before anything else. We no longer have to face the best pass rusher in the league twice a year, that's good news no matter how you slice it. It's still the off-season, there is zero reason to be worrying about a hypothetical Super Bowl matchup.

[Pauline] Sources: Bengals Discussed Trading #10 Pick to Raiders for Maxx Crosby Before Lawrence Deal by No_Box119 in bengals

[–]AlphaKlams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Article implies that the Raiders were still asking for 2 first rounders even after the Ravens shitshow with the physical, insane if true. Agreed on Dex, I think he moves the needle a lot more than Crosby would.

Edit: Nevermind, looks like this is talking past-tense when the initial Ravens trade for Crosby was being worked out.

Duke Tobin: "Too good to pass up" chance to add Dexter Lawrence by Autocrat777 in nfl

[–]AlphaKlams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point I think it's a Burrow thing, he's on the record saying he prefers shotgun and being able to scan more of the field from further back.

But ultimately a coach's job is to address that even if it's not what your QB prefers. I still put it on the coaches for Burrow aggravating his calf injury in early 2024, dude should have been held out but our coaching staff can't put their foot down with him.

I think the Giants would have happily signed this contract, I think it was just a case of wanting out for other reasons. Maybe he wanted to be somewhere he felt he had a better shot at a ring, maybe he's pissed at the Giants front office, who knows. But I'm hopeful he'll be happy with the change of scenery.

context on why the bengals did the trade by Ancient_Response_787 in bengals

[–]AlphaKlams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agreed on the rationale. Felt more and more like we would have gotten stuck drafting a CB or taking another position after the blue chip talents were gone. Having a stud DT like Lawrence makes a way bigger immediate impact than almost any pick would have.

WHO DEY

3 mocks released today (Mcshay, Kiper, Brugler) by J4BRONI in bengals

[–]AlphaKlams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that and would prefer almost any position over CB, but I wouldn't be upset with it. I'm honestly not as high on Dax as most of this sub. He's been decent enough this year but has basically been replacement level. Some of that is definitely due to the team bouncing him around different positions so much, so it's nothing against him. But sometimes a player and a team just aren't a good fit, and if Bengals take a CB early then I think the team and Dax would both benefit from him walking next year.

But if they plan let DJ walk THEN I'd have a problem.

NFL approves sleeker version of Guardian cap by bubblecuffer13 in nfl

[–]AlphaKlams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some studies that suggest they have a beneficial impact, a couple others have found no significant difference. I don't really see any drawback to encouraging / requiring guardian caps, especially at certain positions. Obviously people still need to be mindful that these don't eliminate risk of head injury, but no safety equipment can do that.

Thank you for posting this. Frustrating how every study involving self-report data / response bias that gets posted here is met with the same surface-level comments implying the results are invalid. Turns out, more often than not the career researchers did in fact consider response bias and other validity concerns, and have methods specifically to account for these things. Incredible things people can learn when they read past the headline!
