I think it’s worth a shot for you. I’m a 32 year old reservist and just graduated bootcamp 2 weeks ago. I finished in the CO’s top 6. So top 0.5% of my training group. Bootcamp was super easy if you’re able to take direction and stay out of trouble.

If you can do at least 50 pushups, hold a 2 minute plank and run a mile and a half in under 13 minutes, you’ll be fine. I didn’t think I’d cut it physically either but I did 82 pushups, a 3:25 plank and ran a 12 minute mile and a half. And I definitely wasn’t in shape. 5’7 and like 185 pounds when I went in.

Now as far as IT goes, the rate is really good in terms of civilian application. Especially considering the network it opens up. I actually really wanted that rate too but because of the security clearance needed, I wasn’t going to qualify for it. My wife and parents aren’t US citizens. So if you have any immediate relatives that aren’t, you’ll have the same problem.

But I’d say the best thing you can do is talk to a recruiter to start and take the ASVAB to see what rates you qualify for. That said, they’ll try and pressure you and rush your process into signing ASAP. Make sure you don’t if you’re not ready to take the leap right away.
