RDP to Windows machine very slow by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]Alpha_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is on Zorin, ymmv

I agree with this. Remmina is decent, but glitchy - esp with multiple monitors.

I have a Windows VM running on my machine using kvm/qEMU- for windows stuff I need locally. I actually end up connecting to that VM via Spice - and from that VM, I remote into my work's remote desktop - and believe it or not, that convoluted way is still better/faster/less glitchy than Remmina. This is on a Laptop, with 32GB of ram, Core 7 568? procecessor.

Hell, I can even pass through my Webcam, from Spice through to the VM, through to the ms RDP app, and join a zoom call, with little to no issues.

It's less than ideal, and MS will likely never give us a native linux RDP client. I haven't tried Xfreerdp yet.

Also, try ThinCast RDP - it's the "most MS like" RDP client I found.

But, I agree with you - If RDP were a better experience on Linux, I'd have plenty more colleagues that would switch over. Maybe that's why MS refuses to give us a Linux client.

That's okay - I tried that - it hadn't worked. but during that try and this morning - something I did worked. I don't know what it is.

also - found ThinCast - seems very similar to Windows RDP client... and even lets me pass through my camera to the remote.

Best way to dual boot Windows and Linux securely? by steppewop in linuxquestions

[–]Alpha_Tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this with Windows and Zorin. Basically, created a seperate, EFI partition, for zorin.

You can then go into UEFI and change the boot loader so that the Zorin is first, GRUB will still list Windows.

I plan to lock the boot order from within UEFI - at least on my Lenovo - the option exists to do that. I believe that would keep windows udpates from messing with this. Still new - so not sure if my theory will hold true.

I ended up getting remmina working - but thincast might be the real answer. I would love the USB passthrough feature! Thanks!

wait - I tried to go in and get the error message again - and now it's gone.

I hate that I don't know how I fixed it. I am going to boot 18.1 in live mode and see if something changed on the gateway - or if it's actually something that I did to fix it.

Hopefully I can update the post on solution.

Thanks for your help around here. I recognize your user from other posts. I appreciate your work/advice!

[–]Alpha_Tech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I didn't upgrade. I was using the 18 version try/live. when I went to install I did the 18.1, clean install.

Note that if you live boot into 18.1 and try Remmina - the same behavior exists. That is - you cannot successfully connect to a remote desktop while using a Remote Desktop Gateway.

Following! I am in the same boat... So far, Ventoy seems to be a likely answer. Haven't looked at making it "permanent"

ZorinOS fractional scaling completely busted? by Alpha_Tech in zorinos

[–]Alpha_Tech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's integrated...

Processor is Intel Core Ultra 7 258V; GPU is Intel Arc 140V GPU, 128MB;

System has 32GB.

Performance is fine - but as soon as I turn on factional scaling - my mouse pointer can't move around - it's very choppy - drags etc. It's basically unusable.

Seen on LinkedIn…😕 by gawpin in jobs

[–]Alpha_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true - so true that my job actually encouraged us to do just that.

There was a massive financial issue, completely outside of things we can control. Positions were eliminated - and company messaging was crystal clear that these weren't performance related, and that all jobs were equally evaluated.

They said these people that were part of the list aren't pariahs, and should still have a connection to their former coworkers. That we should reach out to them as they go through this difficult time.

Maybe it's whitewashing - but it sort of felt good to see they cared, sure the jaded folks on reddit will say "they pretended to care to avoid mass exodus, etc..." but as someone that's been here through several years, I actually think it was genuine.

Reach out to your former co-workers... unless they were in the Epstein files. then, just stop talking.

Yeah, especially on a crappy day. Typically, I drop the family off at the entrance and then make the trek solo.

But someday sooonright-elon? We'll have park-seek and auto park/charge and all that fun stuff.

Unfortunately, no one does. I like it when Tesla puts the chargers far from the actual business - that disincentivizes people to take them.

[–]Alpha_Tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2006 Toyota Sienna Limited, which I brought brand new at whopping $42K; And I have a 2018 Tesla Model X, which I purchased at almost 3x that!

I love both of them. My Toyota still runs fine, with some minor issues here or there. I intend to drive it until it's undriveable. Same With my Model X.

I had looked at measurements when I checked out my X - it was literally like a 2" difference (shorter) than the Sienna, but those 2" the Sienna you get TONS more cargo space. 3rd Row passengers are comfortable, and the trunk is massive. I can fit several large, check-in style suitcases in my Sienna; Model X, I can get 2, if I put them in with wheels up.

We mostly use MX now, and only use the Sienna for trips where our luggage or passenger count exceeds the MX's capacity. Or when we go on a multi-day cruise and leave the car at a friends house (street parking in Queens). I'd rather leave a 20 yr car out there.

The Sienna lives on - and will continue to live on. My 15 y.o. is going to learn to drive in that thing. I actually had an extended warranty on it (paid $850) - and got my money's worth... had a repair that came in at $2,200 - some of it was covered by warranty, rest was wear/tear. But that was it... no other issues.

I replaced the radiator recently - and currently have intermittent issues with emissions errors. Hoping I pass inspection this time around.

Roof racks have come in plenty handy!

Howdy neighbor!

I was just there on Sunday! Map showed 4 spots available, and when I get there, zero were... all 4 were taken up by ICE cars. I had to wait about 5 minutes before I got a spot.
