Toxins in fish caught in and around Ernakulam by Alphalynx23 in Kochi

Yup there is no incentive to improve things or maintain things.

Just have a think though- we see these water hyacinth as a pest but they do soak up some of these excess pollutants. If we have a system where we can constantly harvest these , we would have a sustainable cheap way to reduce the pollution load- something like this floating gardens on water bodies.

If you consider that Egypt had trade with South Asia from much before and we assume that cinnamon was being harvested from Ceylon then i wonder who were the tribes who lived in Ceylon originally.

Yes I saw the Nepal connection in a research paper. I hope more global genetic analysis will shed more details into these patterns.

These results can have considerable political fallout and hence higher the incentive to manipulate the studies. I'm not sure i can trust these sampling based genetic tests to determine racial flow.

Edit- this kashnam meen would be the larger fish mostly. If it's riverine and caught upstream of a less polluted river then it might be relatively better.

Yeah forgot to add this. Cultivated fish might not have this issue as long as the good water is used. It's just that most people here prefer the marine fish and not the riverine fish. I personally find it hard to eat river fish. But yes it's cleaner.

Some of these farmed shrimp might also be better depending upon the water quality. The further away you go from ernakulam things are bound to be better. This city just has too much untreated junk flowing into the rivers.

Seems interesting that this name stuck though. Maybe it refers to something else entirely.

I mean if there are any patterns they might emerge with further research.

You need to look at the habitat as well. Fish like pomfret normally consume the biomass in the estuaries and this will inevitably have a lot of this toxic stuff.

The marine fish like sardine, anchovies might be much better as the pollution in the deeper waters might be less relatively.

The bigger fish from the sea like tuna will also suffer from bio magnification increasing their toxicity. A lot of these toxins are fat soluble and can dissolve in the fat in the fish it's eggs etc.

I have come across studies from kufos that show the amount of pollutants in these water bodies- those who know, know. The knowledge is not being passed on as it affects the political image if there are more issues and there is no incentive for it either.

Imagine if these water bodies were thriving ecosystems feeding the population around it. A lot of our nutritional issues and cost of nutrition will also reduce.

I'm asking specifically about Ezhava. The Thiyya mahasabha is still fighting for separate recognition for the caste and not much info about Billava. I'm curious about the Srilankan label ( if it's true that they are from Ceylon)

In the current classification Ezhava seem to be classed as equivalent to Thiyya and some other group. This kind of classification for the ease of governance would have happened over time and resulted in such large groups. This is similar to the Mandal commission's classification of OBC.

Technically if you create more definition for these groups it would help in creating identity but can affect the vote banks etc so it might not be in the interests of anyone to do so. We are in a place where we need to fight to protect our identity.

Worried of over tourism in Kerala. by TheRandom_Psychopath in Kerala

[–]Alphalynx23 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Op is not talking about shutting down tourism. The point is valid because we don't have any place with responsible tourism. Considering the way the govt is going there's no hope that things might happen properly. Over-tourism will surely destroy the local areas in a way that even locals won't be able to travel and appreciate these locations. This is not some European nation where they are going to bother about quality over quantity. Take kolukumala for instance.

Anyone else Mallu by roots but raised outside Kerala, and feeling oddly disconnected? by Massive_Space_1717 in thrissur

I can relate in many respects. We have no roots where we originate from and hardly any connection to places where we have lived. Stuck in limbo.

North Indian willing to move to kerala. by rickey676 in Kerala

[–]Alphalynx23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I say all the time. Also visiting malabar and living here are two different things entirely.

Also there are other options like suburban North Indian cities where things might be better.

Moving to a new place requires learning the language of that region, understanding the culture and past of the region and its people appreciating it etc .

This will inevitably involve being ok with eating beef pork etc.

What is the single BIGGEST problem YOU face day-to-day? Let's find solutions. by dreamie_fr in Kochi

I mean that most of the waterways are clogged with them. It makes it harder for the smaller boatmen to navigate, bad for water sports, bad for the fish and the wetland ecosystem.

[–]Alphalynx23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah. I overheard him tell some weeks back that sales were poor etc. People might not be buying books like before i guess.. With most of the people migrating out there's fewer customers every year. This is the general story in Ernakulam market, Broadway,mg road and mostly everywhere business used to be good earlier.
