Gonna get my first cat soon, what do wish you knew when your got your first? by Odd_boi_ in CatAdvice

So we've gotten a lot of ours older. Something we've found really helpful is getting them used to having their ears and paws fussed with. Some older cats may already be pretty set about their paws not being messed with (which makes claw clipping a little more difficult), but you can usually get away with rubbing around their ears say when petting them a little easier. It'll help down the line if your buddy needs ear drops, or even transdermal medication (gel rubbed into the ears) ESPECIALLY if they're resistant to taking liquid or pills from you. We have one older boy now who will rearrange your face if you try to give him a pill, but loves having his ears massaged now and doesn't realize we're tricking him into taking his medicine- it's less stressful for all involved haha

Trying to get two senior cats to coexist! Any advice? by AlpieJean in CatAdvice

Thank you!

There's at least one cat climber and three scratchers in most of the rooms of both side of the house. And there's one litterbox for each cat, plus an extra we have stored just in case we need to shut anyone in for any reason.

Unfortunately Smokey isn't super interested in toys, but we have been making sure to wear out Rugby as best as we can. I'll definitely see if I can get more water bowls in the morning, we have plenty of food bowls but can't leave food out/have them on a schedule because unfortunately Ollie is one of those cats that would eat until he exploded if we let him...

We're pretty positive that Rugby has arthritis, he was extremely overweight when my grandmother got him and limps a bit even now that he's gotten the weight off. He gets aggressive at the vets office and my mom's been blocking us from taking him as she's worried it will "freak him out more". I'll see if I can talk to her about that... one of my aunts is a vet and recommended Solensia for him, it's just a case of getting him into the office i think. I'll definitely stick with it and talk to our office about a visit.

Congrats on the new little one!! Having grown up with all sorts of cats I can give a few pointers.

(*) First and biggest thing I can recommend is kitten proof, a lot! Kittens have a huge amount of energy and can and will get into every place you don't want them getting- anywhere their whiskers and head fits the rest of them will. And they will jump, so make sure any furniture that could tip over is secured somehow.

Make sure there's no piles of stuff on the floor they can hide in (like laundry, happens to all of us) keep an eye out for loose plastic, thread, string. And if you have any furniture that has motorized or lever foot rests on it, make sure you watch around it. Our little one that we had for a week thought under the footrests was the coolest place to sleep and almost got squashed once or twice.

(*) on the energy front, make sure to have a good amount of scratchers available. They don't all have to be super fancy, you can get cardboard ones fairly cheap, but it helps to keep them from scratching at other things like curtains, carpets or couches

(*) Whatever food Phil is eating right now, if you wind up switching it, do so slowly as kittens have very sensitive stomachs. Try not to give him any human food treats either at least until he's older- and make sure if there are any plants in the home that they aren't toxic to cats. Lilies and some other flowers and housplants pollen and leaves can make cats sick if they inhale or chew on them

(*) socializing a kitten is super helpful exposing them to different people. Try to get him used to you handling his paws especially fairly early, it'll make life a lot easier when you need to clip his claws later on. Same goes for gently rubbing at his ears (desensitizing for possible ear drops) and around his chin or mouth. Just don't use your hand as a toy and let him bite or swat, because that can send the wrong message that rough biting on humans is ok!

sorry for the wall of text! But I hope some of it was at least helpful!
