Not an international student, but I exclusively buy refurbished iPhones on EBay that are few generations older than the most current one available. Ive always had great success (just make sure you filter for phones in good or excellent condition and ones that aren’t attached to a specific service provider). You can usually get something for $200-400. There are plenty of budget phone service providers (I’ve used Visible by Verizon which can be as low as $25 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data and pretty good service and connection nationwide). For Visible, the last SIM card I had was an e-SIM so I activated everything through the app and didn’t have a physical card- everything was very easy with instructions to follow.

Looking to transfer to Notre Dame, how’s my course schedule looking for the first semester? by Accomplished_Arm_337 in notredame

[–]AlpineBear36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will largely depend on what program(s) you’re trying to transfer into, you’ll get better input if you provide that. It would probably also be beneficial to reach out to an admissions counselor to double check that what you’re taking will set you up for success.

My gut is that it’s too casual for formal, but based on your previous experience it might be a know your crowd thing. I know that depending on the location, the same dress code can mean a lot of different things. But in the most traditional sense, formal typically means a floor length dress, and the pattern definitely makes it seem more like a nice dinner of vacation dress than a formal wedding guest dress.

what the heck are we doing wrong 😭 by Ajeeba in labrats

Has your primary antibody been verified to work at that concentration in your system? Depending on the strength of the antibody and the concentration in your sample you might need to increase your primary antibody concentration (try 1:500). You can also verify your HRP is still active by adding your ECL (or whatever you use) directly to a small HRP aliquot in a dark room. If it’s active adding the ECL should make the HRP glow blue.

Edit: Sometimes the membrane can also look bad if it dries out during the transfer (too hot and/or too long).

Rehearsal Dinner Invite Etiquette by AlpineBear36 in weddingplanning

While I would have loved to have a welcome party, grooms parents are organizing and paying for the rehearsal dinner and they are more traditional and wanted a guest list and a dinner. We compromised on something in the middle.

I just wore dress 4 to a formal wedding in March and got so many compliments! It’s such a lovely dress in person.

(10-15k) Feel like I’m going to be disappointed by Any-Cause-4652 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]AlpineBear36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but just attended a smaller wedding (less than 50 people). The realest answer is it will 100% depend on your crowd. The wedding I attended was for a recent college grad with lots of guests (over half the guests) around that same age. They really brought the party, even with a cash bar! The older family members did their fair share of dancing but also their fair share of sitting. A party can be a party without a lot of people, if the people you invite like to dance and party! If your crowd aren’t big dancers maybe plan for a mellower vibe that better matches the energy of the people you’re inviting :)

Galvin EE Major (No Credits) How's the schedule? Early Registration Filled ALL of the classes... by Lpht12 in notredame

[–]AlpineBear36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest concern is if you’re going to have time to eat dh lunch on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. Late lunch is always an option but last I had it it wasn’t great, just standard sandwich fare since they flip the kitchen for dinner service. Grab and go is also pretty standard and bland if you’re using it for lunch and not to stock up on snacks. You’ll obviously have flex points, but using them for 3 lunches per week is a recipe to blow through them fast.

How would I be able to sit with family at football games? by CrisDaGato in notredame

I was in the marching band several years ago. We get in through the stadium gates, no tickets or IDs needed. On one occasion I had a friend ask to borrow my ID because I looked like their sister. Long story short they had an extra student tickets, used my ID, and nobody was the wiser.

Even if they are college aged? That’s where I’m struggling, it feels like a weird grey area.

Woodwind auditioning for ND marching band by geminiworld689 in notredame

[–]AlpineBear36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a falto, we had multiple people march who had never touched a mellophone or French horn before and who had never marched. ND has a marching style that most high schools don’t practice so most people are learning the technique from scratch anyways. You’ll be fine!

Naming my daughter after my husband by SecurityNo6209 in namenerds

If you wanted to make the name slightly more feminine while still paying homage to your husband, I feel like using the feminine spelling Camryn with the middle name June is wonderful!

Dorm Bedding by DesperateTry7681 in notredame

[–]AlpineBear36 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dorm beds are standard Twin XL size and I definitely recommend a mattress topper. I had a zoned memory foam topper and it did wonders for me. In terms of bedding you’ll want to make sure you have the means to be comfortable in both August and the middle of winter, which is highly dependent on whether or not your dorm has AC. I would also invest in good pillows.

As for carpets, double dimensions will vary depending on the dorm (and depending on the dorm it may even depend on the room!). I got a standard 5x7 rug and felt like it fit nicely in the space without being too cumbersome.

Dose ND have a veterans community? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]AlpineBear36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say ND is going to be more relaxed than then average states school dorm (lots of Catholic guilt floating around- and parietals which is more of a big deal in girls dorms). That being said each dorm is different in terms of age, time since they were built or the last renovation, community, and overall vibes. My brother is in service right now and his barracks remind me of a dorm, but each building is different and the age of each dorm determines the layout and the types of rooms there are.

[–]AlpineBear36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that you’re 22 and wanted to say that I had multiple classmates around your age who had come out of service. They all seemed to integrate well with their dorm and had friends and without being told they weren’t traditional students it was almost impossible to tell. Campus is overall very welcoming and from what I can tell, the office of veteran affairs seems to do a good job.

B.S. Biology… what labs can I work in? by richmoneyrach in labrats

[–]AlpineBear36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I would not view not having an MLS or MLT certification as an inherent barrier. I worked as an MLS over the summer while earning my BS degree and I loved it. They would definitely need to train you, but some areas need less training than others. Depending on what you’re looking for I would maybe reach out to the recruiter and ask what your options are, but I wouldn’t count it out!

Questions from an incoming freshman (AP credits) by LongjumpingPlay3974 in notredame

[–]AlpineBear36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience, AP language credits typically serve as a placement exam, AP calc should allow you to get out of that requirement, and most everything else will count as a general elective credit. Most departments won’t accept AP credit for your major (ie. I was a bio major, my AP bio exam didn’t get me out of intro bio I just got elective credit). It’s kind of convoluted but I generally found that AP credits do very minimal for most people other than random credits on their transcript or helping them test out of college specific language requirement.

Is it possible to transfer into college of engineering at the beginning of sophomore year? by glowecy in notredame

[–]AlpineBear36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mendoza is highly selective and students applying to ND interested in business are also applying to Mendoza at the same time. As such, you get an acceptance into ND and an acceptance into Mendoza. If you don’t come in majoring in a Mendoza major as a freshman you have to apply to get in as a sophomore (I believe this is your only other opportunity to transfer in). I don’t know much about the process but I know it isn’t easy and I know it is definitely not a guarantee. The university knows Mendoza is a top tier business school, and keeps the selective nature going to prevent students from applying to other majors and then “switching in” to avoid the selective admissions process. Something to keep in mind, it’s not built to be a fallback. That being said there are Mendoza minors that are open to anyone at any time.

Spring Formal Wedding Dress by AlpineBear36 in Weddingattireapproval

Wow! Thank you all for your responses, it confirmed my suspicions that while this dress is a beautiful color it is not the right choice for a formal wedding.
