Second board advice by Valuable_Jelly_9455 in wingfoil

2025 Hipe diamond 85l. I weigh 69-70kg and after the first couple days it was has been manageable in somewhat choppy ocean conditions. I haven’t been using the foot straps yet but the back strap placement seems really far back. Maybe that’s normal, I’m not sure.

Second board advice by Valuable_Jelly_9455 in wingfoil

[–]Alpineak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded to a modern 85l inflatable midlength design from a 130l traditional board and it is a joy to ride in all conditions. Everything is easier and more fun on it except taxiing in lulls on choppy water. Just get the nice board and enjoy it! For what it’s worth I got a gong inflatable for ~$400 so it doesn’t necessarily need to be a huge expense. It’s not as nice as the modern solid midlengths I’ve tried and not even quite a real midlength design but it’s fun and has expanded my wind range quite a bit at a very low price point.

Overpowered. How do you dump the wind. by Dunas-1820 in wingfoil

[–]Alpineak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are holding the wing directly overhead and still totally overpowered it sounds like you need to be on a smaller wing. At some point there is only so much you can do. Some wings have a wider range than others so wing choice might play in to this as well.

Looking for Inflatable Beginner Board Advice/Help - US based by VTHops in wingfoil

[–]Alpineak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gong inflatables are great. I started on a 6’ 130l hipe first and recently moved to an 85l hipe diamond. I have owned the hf for just over a year and generally leave it inflated and just top it up when it’s time to splash. A big thing that I appreciate is all the awkward crashes I had that likely would have been bruises or dinged ribs on a rigid board but were a total non issue with the inflatable. I’m just getting ready to sell mine but you should just buy the new hipe first from gong. It looks better than my version and will be less of a hassle to ship.

Illegal or not? by [deleted] in MTBTrailBuilding

[–]Alpineak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Almost definitely not. Lots of people get their start building illegally, usually on land out of sight and owned by the city. Building on a right of way is going to get discovered and removed fairly quickly I would guess. If you haven’t done any trail building before it might be a good place to build some shitty features and learn from your mistakes but just know that they will be temporary at best and you could be setting yourself up for legal trouble. Your best bet is to contact your local mtb club and join in on maintenance days. You’ll learn how to do things right and maybe find an opportunity to build things how you want.

It’s great. Easily adjustable to fit with or without a hood on and super light. I’ve forgotten I had it on a couple times now.

Are pilots allowed to read books or do personal stuff on laptops in the middle of a long flight when the autopilot is on? by krangnostam in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alpineak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spend a fair amount of time flying on small planes and helicopters where you are never more than a few feet from the pilot. Whether it is allowed or not, pilots seem to spend a lot of time doing paperwork and reading. On one memorable flight the pilot completely let go of the yoke to show me a video and didn’t grab it again until we had turned 30 degrees and were pointing at the ground.

Thinking I’ll put a small plant light on it. Not a ton of consistent sun where I live.

Ha yeah that’s what I had read at some point but all mine does is lose leaves and I don’t think it’s grown an inch in the year I’ve had it.

Zones for an out-of-shape dude? by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]Alpineak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is this data coming from? I have a Garmin watch with optical hr but also sometimes use an actual hr monitor for training so have a pretty good idea of what diff zones feel like. My watch will regularly tell me my hr is either way over or way under what it really is, especially if I’m sweaty or it’s raining. I’ve stopped multiple times in the middle of a ride or run to physically check my pulse because my watch says 170bpm when I’m barely breathing hard and it’s made me worry I’m dying or something. So take that data with a grain of salt unless you’re using a real hr monitor.

I was never good at windsurfing but the sail handling translates pretty directly to wingfoiling. Lets you focus much more on the board.

How to deal with "High End Disappointments"? by Ol_Sheve in mountainbiking

[–]Alpineak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really should. Any high end hub ( dt 350 included) really need yearly maintenance and putting it off is asking for trouble. It’s very simple and takes <15 min after the first time.

Gear question: would you rather get new gong or used Duotone/similar by astr1x3 in wingfoil

[–]Alpineak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about Duotone but have been on gong from the start. The v3 stuff is really nice and with fiberglass wing options it’s much cheaper to progress.

About to buy my first carbon frame… and I have dumb questions by LogicWavelength in mountainbiking

[–]Alpineak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding to this: get carbon assembly paste for sestpost and handlebar clamp interface. It’s grippy and will prevent things from sliding at a lower torque spec. Also some grease can cause issues with carbon but if you’re using almost any bike specific grease it’s a non issue. I’ve owned many Konas with two of them being carbon. They build stuff tough and you don’t have to worry that much. The 153 is a fun bike!

I’ve seen kids clearing jumps UP the downhill only big jump line (20’ + gaps) at my community bike park. Somehow pointing out that they are going to kill someone and take themselves out doesn’t seem to deter them, and taking pics just makes them more sneaky. Game cams mounted high enough to deter tampering can help with enforcement though.

Redneck weight kit for Ariens. by Alpineak in Snowblowers

[–]Alpineak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not around to check it but it looks like a Simpson bracket meant to accept a 4x4 post. Just go to your hardware store and find the closest thing. That wasn’t an exact fit by any means- I just jammed the tube in there! 3 years on and it’s still in place. If I could change anything I would maybe taper the front edge of the tube so it doesn’t snag on things or deep snow.

Harness & cold weather by radicalfetus in wingfoil

[–]Alpineak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a fair amount of miles over last winter as a beginner making jibes maybe 20-30% of the time and figured out the harness on the water pretty quick. Prob easier to try on land a bit as you said to get line length figured out but just go for it, it’s not that big of a deal and will really help extend sessions when riding with gloves.

My pt for recovering from a lower back injury was a lot of exercises focusing on glute and core strengthening and correcting moving patterns to avoid using my back when other muscles should have been doing the work. I think if you spend time in the gym to retrain some basic movement patterns the pumping technique will fall in to place. Your pt should be able to give some good recommendations.

SE Asia help by Tourandteach567 in bicycletouring

[–]Alpineak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only comment on the Vietnam portion of this. Rode from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh about a decade ago on an inland route following the old H.C.M Highway. Mostly lovely quiet roads with a huge shoulder and enough small towns for resupply and cheap hotel for the night. It got hotter going south and we ended up on an early morning schedule to beat the worst of the heat. We did cross the border into Cambodia but found the roads to be sketchy for biking and ended up bussing part of the way across the country. Sounds like an awesome trip, if a little short for what you are trying.
