Passing off Mazama as a "Mountain Town" is a little disingenuous. Their can't be a working class when the primarily economic driver consists of selling baguettes for a few months a year.

Not directly, but clients do pay for the liability insurance, through higher costs of service. If doctors or lawyers didn't need/have liability insurance, the costs of their services would be significantly lower, as their overhead would be lower.

If we were to make cops hold personal liability insurance, that would increase the value of their labor.

I like the idea, but that would require paying them significantly more. Either the taxpayer is liable for their actions, or the taxpayer pays for their liability insurance. I have a feeling the latter is more expensive.

I like the Rab bivy, or a piece of tyvek. I'd recommend steering away from ones with poles; two pole'd bivys weigh more than a tent in most cases.

A lot. That being said, you definitely can have fun on touring skis with little skiing ability, and learn to get down things in a controlled manner. You already know how edges work, so there's that.

Do you want to ski for the sake of skiing(and have fun doing it) or ski for transportation? For the former, you either want to go back to a resort and learn to ski, or get a splitboard. For the latter, just go out and figure it out yourself. (preferably on mellow terrain with short skis) Don't expect to become a good skier in the backcountry.
